Is The Balenciaga DESTROYED Paris Sneaker Taking It Too Far?

  • Balenciaga unveiled its new line of "full destroyed" footwear this week, prompting online criticism over the extremely distressed aesthetic and hefty price tag.
The luxury fashion house released the distressed version of its Paris High Top Sneaker on Monday. The limited edition line retails for $1,850, and features "full destroyed" detailing like rips, scuffs and what appears to be dirt. It's more than twice the price of the standard Paris High Top Sneaker, which costs $625 for a non-distressed look.

Statement from BoF article - However, as the adage goes, “there’s no such thing as bad publicity,” and if the aim was to start a conversation, then the campaign was a success. It has generated almost $5 million in media impact value (MIV), a measure of conversation on social media, in just 48 hours, according to Launchmetrics. By comparison, Balenciaga’s Kim Kardashian campaign from earlier this year garnered $2.4 million in MIV in its first two weeks.

Interesting video. A couple of counter points: This "meant to be worn for a lifetime" marketing is not new or singular to Balenciaga. Frankly, it is kind of ridiculous considering even the most durable Rick sneakers are going to be cooked after just a couple years. Additionally, it is a pretty weak attempt at sustainability just to rock the Balenciaga Paris sneaker everyday or buy just one piece of couture, when the brand is creating fad after fad, that they obviously don't expect to be timeless styles. I love fashion that has meaning or a concept, but that alone doesn't make it good.

When I saw the shoe I admittedly rolled my eyes. After your video I am humbled to admit that I judged the product too soon. Selling quality made fashion products with a worn appearance truly does extend the life of the product as it will forever look new. Items looking new and fresh is not inherently important but it is certainly something a large percentage of the market cares about.
Thank you for sharing information that changed my perspective!

@@ouzsnfouaenxfgfgsgsuhoauvdjd Yes it's mostly references to his youth in a poor ex soviet country. I just find it funny that anyone would pay thousands for what is essentially a "poor" persons style. In one way it's almost insulting to those who really are in poverty but in another it may make them feel like they are now more on trend. Or just that they don't need to aspire to wealth through their clothes anymore (one can hope). I just find it funny that balenciaga hired him to be creative director vetements must have been selling quite well for them to make that decision, I know Demna gets a lot of media attention but I often wonder how much that really translates to sales. I have only ever seen one person wearing a head to toe "Demna" balenciaga outfit and honestly it looked comical. Really just felt like they were a fashion trend victim with too much money.

I am not against this shoes, whoever wants to purchase them go for it. And now my opinion: I feel this shoes are a fail, however, they will be popular and coveted and sold for millions in the future, the same way literal poop (or a version) in a can is consider art today. Because of demand, because limited editions are the way to fix a lack of ideas, sorry. I think the aesthetic fail comes because when he did the IKEA bag for example, it looks like the IKEA bag, but you don’t have to look too much to realize it’s actual fancy leather, and that makes it cool. That is a representation, a version, an interpretation of the bag, not an actual IKEA bag which almost no one would use for fashion. This sneakers however, don’t look like fancy shoes pretending to be distressed, this sneakers look like trash literally. The fancy part was taking out completely. And no, the name Balenciaga alone won’t make a thing fancy, not anymore. Write Balenciaga on a piece of paper from a trash can, would you buy it? And then, is he glorifying poverty? They said the same about Galliano’s hobo collection for Dior 20 years ago. The difference is that Galliano did it for Haute Couture, not for the people to purchase it in masses (he had a softer pret a porter version of this collection)and Demna is doing it in pret a porter directly. But then, isn’t that exactly Demna’s thing? Doing for pret a porter what every other designer would do only for the Haute Couture collections? Then, the question is… Can you give a real message on a pret a porter collection or should designers keep their deepest messages and more artistic ideas only for the Haute Couture collection? They can do whatever they want to, honestly. But then is there a limit? Would people expend all that money to wear those ugly sneakers for the sake of spreading a message they don’t understand? I wouldn’t. And not because of the message, but because I prefer to actually act against the wrong doings of the fashion industry by buying vintage, than pretending I care by overpaying for shoes I don’t even like. But that is only my humble opinion.
He has had exceptional ideas. This one is not one of them. The cool is gone and he is starting to try too hard at this point. Cool doesn’t happen when you try to make it cool.

Yes the shoes were horrible and I passed. They are literally sitting and those that did buy them can't unload them on ebay or poshmark. It felt like throwing something at the wall hoping it would stick. It's 2023 now and I think people aren't going to be pleased going forward to have a name alone slapped on a product. The consumer at least needs to be inspired especially at those prices.

I haven’t seen the video yet but I think from an artistic stand point the shoes are cool but the fact that it’s sold as an actual shoes and for that price! It sure is taking it too far. As you mention, a tale as old as time, zoolander, 90s distressed jeans, it was an easy way to manipulate the non fashion masses into outrage and memes for free marketing and increase brand awareness, the general populace will always be at odds with the cost/practicality ratio of fashion and that relationship is most readily triggered with distressed and derlict, I think intention and expectations are important when trying to figure out if something is "too far" in the free market, in this case the limited production of these makes it more of a collector piece rather than a functional object, it was never intended as a sneaker, just like all the misc LV branded crap that whales buy up

  • @kage122

i also immediately did some research as to what was actually being sold so i wasn’t so turned off by the campaign as everyone else. I do understand Demna incorporating his background and experiences in his designs i just think there’s no way to escape the criticisms of exploiting the poor even if you were once poor. marketing things that are supposed to appeal to the super wealthy with themes of poverty i don’t think will ever sit right. the fact that only 100 are being manufactured is nice? but we could also make none…and have a way bigger conversation around poverty and the “story” behind ones tattered shoes. this just seems lazy and tbh uninteresting as a consumer.

I personally think that the sneakers look very cool in the destroyed look & I don’t see a problem in the price, we live in a free world we’re anyone can ask for the price they want. A very good comparison I love to draw is paintings, because they are just like fashion is a form of art, so why does no one talkes about the way more ridiculous prices of paintings? Everyday Art sells for millions / billons of dollars, why isn’t it allowed for fashion.
Especially the 100 pair’s heavy destroyed version should be considered as an artwork, because they are unique, not practical (they don’t look like the will last long) and most importantly they have a message / meaning behind them.
If you ask me demna once again wants to inspire people by making a pair of shoes that look very similar to a model that everyone can afford, like he did the the runners ( these are heavily inspired by ASICS shoes). His message is make your own: he wants that people who can’t afford Balenciaga Shoes still can participate in the aesthetic / idea of the brand or collection, by buying the models of shoes demna used as inspiration or even customize them.
This applies also to a lot of the closing that the designs at Balenciaga, which often are reinterpretations of wardrobe staples like a striped shirt, a black suit or a pair of blue denim.
He and Kanye also did the Yeezy x Balenciaga x Gap Collaboration to make these styles, cuts and quality a bit more affordable to open up the fashion world to people that don’t normally can afford Balenciaga or Yeezy.
