When I find myself falling out of love with a patterned garment I often over-dye it. This does not eliminate the pattern, of course, it just shifts the colour way. (Pink over yellow makes orange. Blue over yellow makes green. Etc.)
Depends on what the material is. This fabric looks like it might be synthetic, which doesn't dye. If it's a rayon or cotton or something, I'd highly recommend over-dying.
@@patiencenails6632 There are dyes for synthetic fibers (like the liquid ones from Rit) but I haven't tried them out myself, since I avoid plastic in my clothes.
@@patiencenails6632There are dyes for synthetics! RIT brand called DyeMore, Jacquard brand called iDye Poly. I'm sure there's others, but just off of the top of my head.
I have gotten some delightful results from overdying both garments and fabric. I was going to give away some cotton batik fabric that I did not like the color of, then I tried overdying it and loved the results enough to make a skirt that is now a closet staple.
I love how this dress looks on you! The color totally suits you. It may not be in your color palette but you definitely pull it off well. Like you said, styling it may pull it more towards your color palette. But I really love the flow and drape of the dress as it moves in particular. Very good job!!
That dress looks so good on you!! I don’t think the colour is bad on you, it’s just not a colour we see you wear often. The tessellating pattern is overwhelming however. Maybe a vest over top to cover some of the pattern?
I watch hundreds of thousands of sewing video’s…..this is my life, I’m retired. I want you to know this was a great video. So clear, so pleasant, and easy to follow. I have this pattern and I will cut it out and sew it! Again, you did a great job and I am subscribing.💕🧵
Such a pretty dress. I love the fabric...the print is a bit of me. And the color is so lovely on you. I have two pieces of clothing that has a quilt print fabric. Just looking at your new dress, makes my heart happy. A job well done sweetheart. And it's quite all right to use a ready made pattern. Still it's nice you want to learn to make your own😉.
OMG!! I haven't even watched the video yet, but I just have to shout I'm working on the same dress right now! :D I've wanted to make it ever since you uploaded the first video, but haven't gotten to it until a week ago. But you were faster to finish haha! 😊 Mine should be ready today or tomorrow, can't wait for the result 😊
I bought this pattern after a recent fail with a different wrap dress pattern and I have to say this pattern did not disappoint! It was a perfect fit from the first try.
This came out great. A perfect pairing of fabric to pattern. I didn’t like the fabric at first but I love the scale of it now that’s completed. Accessories would help you to not look as washed out and it’s super cute on your figure. Looks pretty and easy to wear.
The dress is so pretty! If you're not sure about the color of the dress, you could try a blush that leans toward those colors. I think you look amazing! xoxo's Sandie
I've always called that pattern/shape Moroccan tile. Idk what else to call it, but I always see beautiful ceramic tiles in beautiful colors in this shape Edit-- okay, so I literally googled my best description of that shape and it's called a Baroque Lantern 🎉🎉
I’m only mentioning this because you’ve stated multiple times that you do think you want to have children - if you do and decide to have an announcement video, I think it would be SO cute to make a typical sewing video && at the end reveal you’ve made a matching onesie, or even a baby-sized version of whatever you made. 😂
Pretty! I think the long ties were a good idea. I also hate the wrap dresses that button or only tie inside. I want to be able to loosen them after a meal or certain times of the month. The length on this dress is very flattering too.
I think it suits you well and it has really nice shape ☺️ I tend to overlook simple patterns but when I make them, they become quickly my mlst worn pieces 🙂
I love french seams! For the armholes I would suggest bias binding on top, if you want a similar look. I would also strongarm it into a french seams, but the bias binding works nice too.
Something that might help the color issue would be to add a coloured binding along the edges. Even a white would work, but you could try a purple or green or burgundy. It would mean that anywhere directly next to your skin would have a friendlier color. It’s a way to sneak a gorgeous but less that perfect color, fabric, or garment into your wardrobe. Love the dress! It’s so very cute.
As you've come to be a somewhat experienced seamstress (in the eyes of someone like me who only knows how to mend holes on socks) would you consider making a video on simple garments with a step by step explanation for beginners? or something that you would have liked to have when you first started?
The closet historian videos on darts and style lines/princess seams have been very useful for me. Ive watched them so many time. Same with her bodice block video. Ive tried making a bodice blocknusong other methods but the one from the book she uses has worked best for me so for
When I make something I love but the color is off, I dye it. Dye it! You could do a light overdye in a cooler pink that would tone the whole thing down, or try gray.
It’s so darling on you and feels very much like you The print has a lovely feminine pastoral vibrate feel, maybe if it’s too much I agree with the above to tea dye it: the tan tones would neutralize it and often I find tea has a slight red so it would marry into the pink well
I love it! I wonder if a darker belt instead of one made from the same fabric as the dress would tie in your lovely dark hair better. I think the color looks great on you, but you mentioned that you felt it washed you out, so that's my suggestion
Honestly the closet historian is the absolute best resource for learning how to create your own patterns! Do you go back into her audio archive because there's some treasures in there! And she's really nice!
Nicely made, Loepsie! Another resource for tutorials on drafting basic blocks/slopers and addressing fitting issues as a foundation for pattern drafting that I have recently found helpful is the newer RUclips channel Dreamsical.Designs
I LOVE the dress on you! I think it looks great. I tried to google lens the fabric to see if I could find it where I am, but it didn’t come up. The dress looks great on you.
Lovely work there! I think you can actually add two inner strings inside your shorter dress, so you can tie them instead of using a safety pin. Just an idea 😄
I think you could style it with more red assessories to bring it to your color pallet. I woukd love to see another one with the darker fabric and maybe add some volume to the sleeves.
Ive had that problem with the pattern/color before. I adore it in my hands but not as a garment. You should dye it! Mute it down a bit with purple or even a darker pink or red. I love a wrap dress!
Though many of her videos focus more on the fashion industry side of things, there is so much information that anyone interested in anything which overlaps with the industry can take home.
Would you ever consider making a split side skirt? I’d love to see that process since you’re more concise with instructions and other videos ramble a bit too much for me to power through.
When you don't feel the colouring of the dress, maybe you can tone down the harsh bright colours with tea dye or very diluted brown fabric dye. Should give it a more vintage-y look. 😊
I think the pattern going one side doesn't look weird, as there are no straight lines, so it's still quite nice I watched the original video, loved the dress, bought the pattern and had it printed, and it's been more than a year... I must take this video as a sign that it's high time I made the dress :D
Alternatively, you could have sewed a strap(? Binding? Ribbon? What is the correct word for it in English?) On one inner side seem, one on each edge of wrapping and on on the outside to bind that last one there. Same thing is done with hanfus, kimonos, gis etc. Works really well too. In case you don't want to wrap a belt around your dress every single time.
I wish I had more space in my current apartment to sew again. Cos I too learned ona clunky old Singer from the 40s. When we move I’d really like to create space for sewing and for a fairy to bestow a brother machine unto me lol
The clunky old Singer will still be working 50 years after the Brother computerized machine is dead. Think of them like phones. Do you have he same phone you had five years ago? Probably not, I don’t. Old machines were made to be repaired for a lifetime. Modern ones are designed to die and be replaced in five - ten years, max. RIP, my horribly expensive 2000s Kenmore. Granny’s 1907 treadle, however, is still going strong. Love my 60s Rocketeer. Keep the Singer even if you do buy the Brother, you won’t regret it.
If your grainline printed on the pattern is parallel to the selvage edge then you’re on grain. Usually fabric is folded lengthwise putting the selvage edges together. So if you match your grainline to either the folded edge or the selvages you’re good😄 hope that helps! happy sewing!
The fabric is beautiful and looks good on you but I think you should have chosen the shorter skirt version of the pattern becouse usually these colored and complicated prints work better with smaller garments . Also the sleeves would look better in the shorter version. Just my opinion. You could shorten the skirt and sleeves and you would have a totally different dress. :) also, maybe tying it at the back or on a side would make it look less like a robe. Other then this, your sewing skills are amazing! :D
When I find myself falling out of love with a patterned garment I often over-dye it. This does not eliminate the pattern, of course, it just shifts the colour way. (Pink over yellow makes orange. Blue over yellow makes green. Etc.)

I can imagine this as a nice vacation dress in solid black or white linen, with some tan sandals and a straw bag

This would make such a wonderful maternity dress as it would grow with one. If I get pregnant again I may make one similar
Love dresses with that shape for the summer. It’s simple and you always look put together
You look very pretty in your dress, the colour is fresh and bright. This is a great style on you, you have every right to feel proud of your work ❤️

yay! glad everything went so smoothly and you have such a fun dress at the end of it!
It looks incredibly beautiful I can see where you’re frustrated with the back not matching but most people don’t pay attention to that kind of thing!
I’m only mentioning this because you’ve stated multiple times that you do think you want to have children - if you do and decide to have an announcement video, I think it would be SO cute to make a typical sewing video && at the end reveal you’ve made a matching onesie, or even a baby-sized version of whatever you made. 😂
Love it! its a beautiful style on you, very flattering. 💖
I think it would be great to see you sew a wrap blouse that could be worn with jeans.
Love that idea I was thinking the same when she tried in the bodice. 😊
I love this dress on you. Beautiful pattern

It does look good on you! Wear it and you’ll get compliments for sure, watch and see!
The inside finishing is immaculate! Good job!
