You're welcome! I believe this tray was 16 x 20, maybe larger - it was at my job and they have lots that are all different sizes. It's a photo processing tray and you can pick them up from B&H Photo, eBay or Amazon.
Thanks for posting. Would love to explore it in my work. Do you know if it is archival if used on 100% cotton rag, i.e. does the ink contain acids that will eventually destroy the paper? Is it sumi ink or something different? Do you know the ingredients?
11:37 "Ooops! Sure, why not?" Bob Ross would call it a "happy little accident"! Love this technique. Going to try it myself, thanks for this beautiful idea!
omg when you said you taught children as young as 4 years old my first thought was "wow they must've had amazing motor skills" and then you continued talking and explained you let them use yarn- brilliant! :D
I teach a class for blind crafters at out local Center for Vision Loss. I'm going to figure out how to adapt this craft and I think the yarn technique will help a lot. When you talked about your breath moving the water I thought maybe chanting something or saying a prayer might be interesting to see how that infuses spirit into the art. Thank you for doing this!
So cool, and thank you from all us insecure people who think if we make a mistake we must be idiots. Even uber talented people make mistakes and move on! Excellent teaching aura
Thank you :) I'm glad you enjoyed it. I always tell my students that it's perfectly okay for their first book or marbled print to look terrible - it's a learning experience and the more mistakes you make, the more you learn from them!
Much respect for all of it: subject matter, attention 2detail, yr descriptions & explanations, the vivid photography, and allowing us to watch you work in silence too.
From time to time, I make a point to spend some time investigating something in which I have no active interest, just for the sake of seeing what's there. This is often very rewarding. Tonight, the topic was marbling, and I wound up here. I am now completely fascinated and am going to go out and buy what I need to do this tomorrow as soon as the shops open. Well done.
Just when I'm thinking I don't really care for the remaining circle at the end, you BLOW on it. OMG, incredible pattern. Now I'm hooked. Thanks for taking time to make inspiring video. I enjoyed Turkish marbling, playing with a riot of colors. Now I see the beauty in monochrome.
I have done all kinds of paper marbling, but I simply love, love, love this - it's after midnight and I think I am going to try this with some dye ink refills (for ink pads used for stamp art) right now!! Thanks for sharing!
Kate Oe I was trying to figure out the best ink to use so I can try this. I have some stamp pad ink! I'll use some of that now. This is one of a few times the comments section was helpful. Thank ya.
Hi Everett - did the stamp pad ink work for you? Mine didn't, unfortunately. I am now using the German drawing ink called "Scribtol" by Pelikan, which works very nicely. It's only available in black, though.
Thank you the tip about the paint brush not penetrating the water surface. I've tried this...and I always had a lot of ink in the bottom. Beautiful designs.
For those of you who didn't read the description and are wondering what products were used: She used 100% cotton paper, a japanese marbling kit and sumi brushes. There are links for the latter two in the description.
Delighted to have discovered this mesmerizing art form demonstrated succinctly. I’ve got all the time in the world and am always seeking ways to have Fun. Ain’t fun. Ain’t done. This looks fun. Thank you 😊
So lovely. I reeber doing marbeling in school, nothing like this though. If a piece tore by accident, you could cut it into sections. And frame. Each little segmant works by itself as well as a whole.
Bless you, you had a bit of a slip yet you carried on like a real trooper many of us would have collapsed and got in a right state lol. The work still looked amazing and reminded me of a similar technique we used in art class when I was a kid many years ago in London. I think what we did was based on Ebru. Thanks for posting you're are an excellent teacher and you have inspired me to get the inks out and have a go myself.
i hit this on my suggested videos because it looked really neat, and the next thing i know, my cat is up on the desk, watching you. she never does this..EVER. specially on my desk. i though it was a fluke so i recorded her...15 minutes later she is enthralled. her favorite part was the tooth pick. you have some neat stuff. my cat made me subscribe. :)
You held my attention for over 20 mins, that's saying a lot. I really enjoyed your presentation. I've wanted to try but thought it too complicated. Thanks for making not only clear but enjoyable. Looking forward for more vids. Good luck for the future.
Totally inspiring!!! I used to play around a bit with chinese watercolors back in early 90's...tracing the lines of blots with black ink...no actual drawing but fun technique & quite attractive result if you also incorporate some dots & cross hatching... Thank you for this video post!
Awesome. First time seeing or even hearing about this style. Embarrassing, I know! Lol. You have definitely inspired me. I suffer from depression & chronic anxiety so I'm always looking new artistic ways to express myself or soothe my soul ✨ 😌 🐋
good idea a sub woofer under the container would probably work good if you turn it on after putting all the ink in to create a fluid pattern throughout the ink
how about really fine sifted particles or dust from metal filings ? and then waving a magnet over the top or sides or bottom ? or suspended from a string?? or have various types of tree leaves floating while the patterns form around them ____laying the paper down to see if the shapes held
Just beautiful! Always trying to evolve in art. You can't help to evolve doing this kind of creative painting! Can't wait to try this!!! Thank you so much for sharing:)
hey did you use special ink or do you reckon any ink could work? id also like to try this for my graphics class but currently working from home and have limited and supplies, no special paper or ink
Abbie Rayner hi!! I used a Japanese block ink, but my graphics teacher said I could use regular Indian ink as well. Also, newsprint is better to use if you have that because it’s more absorbant of the ink but printing paper is good too!- just be sure to rinse off any excess ink or it will run! :)
@@neyas7137 omg thank you so much for the quick reply !! i haven't got any ink at the minute, going to ask around to see if there's any lying around the house and if not i will order some. i've never worked with ink so honestly don't know what either of those are but do you think calligraphy ink would work if i find some? if not i'll try and order the proper stuff :) and thank you, again not sure of the paper but it's quite thick i just took it from my classroom. i'm a first year so i don't know a lot aha thank you for the advice
Abbie Rayner ayyee no problem!! :)) I’m a first year too!! I learnt suminagashi marbling like a month ago?? I was honestly so confused at the start but once you get used to it it’s so so much fun and quite therapeutic haha :) and you can just play around with it before and get the hang of it- that’s how I learnt :D good luck with it!!
@@neyas7137 omg really? do you do AQA (assume your from uk) .. it looks incredibly beautiful and therapeutic, i am hoping to try it this week :)) i'll let you know how i get on hehe, thank you!!
Hey everyone, the materials used in this tutorial can all be found in the description.
Thank you for this. Really made my day.
Lovely technique. In the description it says ink. Is that Ecoline ink?

Crystal Shaulis what kind of paper and ink used

Thank you for explaining so nicely
This is the best suminagashi English tutorial ❤
Awesome! Great demonstration... I also liked when you dropped it because it will take the edge off my anxiety when I make a mistake! 😂💗

Incredible. I had no idea this technique even existed.

That was just amazing. Who knew that it was that easy and so relaxing. I'm impressed.
I did this once in high school and Blicks was doing a demo a few weeks ago I had to miss. Very helpful. Fun to watch.

Amazing and your explanation is great.
Is it possible to apply a canvas to the top to pull the print as opposed to paper? This was amazingly beautiful and fun!
I believe this video has shown up in a lot of the oddly satisfying video compilations on youtube.
This is awesome! It looks like topographic maps!
