      +Duke Silver the first step in cleaning a chimney is not climbing on the roof and scrubbing the chimney. the first step involves bringing your big heavy high volume canister HEPA vac into the house and sealing off the fireplace.

They surely mean no harm, and they especially wouldn't be doing anything malicious on my roof. Not to mention the lack of vehicle, making me think he doesn't want his vehicle to be seen. Thanks for the insight, man. You're a true prophet.

    Most crooks will come knock on the door first before they break in to see if anybody is home. And if you answer they will always either act like they are there for a job or looking for somebody that doesn't live there. The fact that he parked up the street is very suspicious. If you're a worker you want your truck with all your tools to be as close to the job as you can get it so you don't have to walk back and forth to get tools and whatever. I think you did the right thing Jeff. I hope you got his name and the name of the company he works for so you can look it up and see if it's a real company.

    • @risajajr

      Sounded to me like he said the worker parked his truck on the street in front of his house as opposed to in his driveway. The latter is what he would expect a worker to do.

    • @Bayzz2
      @Bayzz2 6 лет назад

      that really depends on the parking situation or that the guy was clearly lost. He could have driven past, stopped a couple of houses up thinking he saw the right number and decided to carry the ladder and brush instead of turning the truck around.
      definitely doesnt justify pulling a gun on the guy.

  • @jakephilpott8300
    @jakephilpott8300 8 лет назад +57

    The amount of keyboard warriors in these comments who actually think a sensible person wouldn't be immediately suspicious of an unknown and unannounced person on their roof with no general idea of their intentions or if they are armed or not makes me believe that the majority of these people should just can it. It's his property, and a random stranger was on his roof doing who knows what, at a questionable time, and remember, he did not announce himself. That is technically trespassing on his home property by not announcing himself and coming onto the home itself. He had all the right reasons to draw his firearm and ask what the fuck he was doing on his roof, and notice he said he didn't point it at him at all.

    In Germany you would get in big trouble if you pepper spray a guy that broke in to your house and is now standing next to you in your bedroom or while you are dropping something into your damn toilet (you know what I mean :) ). The guy that just broke into your house can go to the law and request an injury award.
    You almost have to be like: Hello Mr. Thief! How you doing? Do you wanna have coffee? Oh yes? Black or with milk? Okay and some sugar. What are looking for? Ah okay. I'll help you searching and bringing the stuff to your truck.
    What's wrong with Germany?!

    I'm a handyman. I'm sent to rental houses every day to fix stuff. 90 percent of the time I'm given a key or a code to just go in the occupied house and get to work. If I was doing exterior work on a rental house. Like a roof repair or winterizing a swam cooler I would not be knocking on the door. The Landlord usually notifies the tenant that someone will be out to work on the house. Sometimes they forget. Don't be so quick on the draw.

      If you starting trespassing on someone's property without alerting the tenant first you risk your life. The landlord should notify the tenant to expect you, it's your duty to alert the tenant when you arrive. Otherwise you're a trespasser and fair game for self-defence.

  • @robertpaulsen969

    Maybe its just me but it sounds like the guy was trying to case the house. No legit company starts climbing on random houses without knocking and talking to the owners/residents. Especially in case they get the wrong house and end up doing a job for free because they didnt verify the address. The fact that the truck wasnt in the driveway makes it seem like he was walking down the street for an empty looking house. Hopefully a report was filed!

    • @Jesses001
      @Jesses001 8 лет назад

      Well I used to have a government job, and they always wanted me to park in the street and not the driveway. I am sure his company is similar. White pants for a chimney sweep though....anything white is kind of odd. Climbing the roof without contacting the owner first, also very odd. He may had just been not that experienced or really dumb though, but casing the house is defiantly not off the table.

    And THIS irresponsibility is why there needs to be a higher bar when it comes to gun ownership.
    Dude, I like your Balisong reviews, but you considered murdering someone because they made a mistake about an address. What if he was just scared cuz you pulled a gun on him, so he dives for cover? Would you have killed this guy? Jesus.What if he had a gun too? What if he just started firing at you because he's trying to do his job and some crazy dude pulls a gun on him?
    And here's what you do when you determine he's not a threat. Put the fucking gun away. You're watching the guy be scared as shit because you're currently holding something that could kill him. Holster the fucking thing so he's not scared, huh? That's on you.

    • @mtzkid261
      @mtzkid261 8 лет назад +3

      1. Slightly pointing your gun at someone doesn't mean you have to shoot that person.
      2. When Jeff says he would have shot him, I doubt he would have "murdered" him. Most likely, if that had happened, he would have fired a shot to incapacitate him. The roof guy was unarmed anyways, why would Jeff need to end the guy's life?

    • @java_bean
      @java_bean 8 лет назад +7

      ***** Dude you pull a gun on somebody you better be ready to end that person's life, because otherwise you shouldn't be threatening it. Folks don't take guns as seriously as they should, they think they have total control over the situation. Accidents happen all the time, and you might just mean to scare someone and end up killing them anyway.
      Jeff may not *want* to kill someone, but you pull a gun on someone and you've put their life at risk. If you put a strangers life at risk without wanting to, you aren't taking your gun seriously.

    • @java_bean
      @java_bean 8 лет назад +2

      +jetsgo66 yeah. that's worth a death sentence.
      if he needs to bring a gun thats one thing, but at least take a look at what's going on and see if the other guy is armed or a danger before you pull the gun, and for fucks sake put it away once you've determined there is no threat.
      I already said this but it deserves stressing: pulling a gun is one step from killing someone, so you really need to make sure you've done your part to pay respects to the seriousness of that situation. a gun is not a toy.

    • @mtzkid261
      @mtzkid261 8 лет назад

      Gabriel Cember You can pull the gun, you don't have to point it at the guy. I personally don't agree with pointing it directly at a guy with a brush in his hand, however, in this case Jeff didn't have to shoot the guy, even though he pointed the gun directly at him for a brief moment.

    • @java_bean
      @java_bean 8 лет назад +2

      +CartoonsPlural Yeah I mean I guess that's fine... just dont point the shit at the guy, and once you realize you dont need the gun it goes right back in the holster so this roofer isn't shitting himself.

      Ok let's say you stopped a guy from breaking into your home and/or stealing your car. He runs away. He sees your elderly neighbor 3 houses down the street come out of the house and he forces her back into the house where he kills her then takes off in her car. You could have prevented her murder and you will be sued for failing to stop him. That's why you can and should shoot someone trying to get away. They pose a threat to the public if they evade detention/arrest.
      Ask yourself these types of questions...
      Do you know everything about that person?
      Do you know exactly what they are thinking? Simply put are you a mind reader?
      Do you know if they have committed other crimes regardless if over a period of time or over the course of that day? Are they violent crimes or is everything leading up to them committing violence?
      Do you know if they escaped jail/prison? Do you know what crimes they committed if they were in jail/prison?
      Can you guarantee that they won't harm anyone if you let them escape detention/arrest? If you let them escape and they harm someone you are legally responsible.
      Can you deal with a huge financial lawsuit/settlement or losing your job if they harm someone else?
      Can you live for the rest of your life knowing that you let them get away and they raped or murdered someone?

    To everyone getting hurt when Jeff said he might have shot him if he ran, did you not stop to think Jeff might have meant if he ran towards him? Running doesn't necessarily mean running away. You can cover a lot of ground in a short period if you have a gun pointed at you.

  • @11696Ron
    @11696Ron 8 лет назад +14

    You should reupload the video with the audio synced and without the line about shooting him if he ran (everyone is complaining about it even though it didn't sound bad to me). • @11696Ron
      @11696Ron 8 лет назад +1

      I feel like most people have had thoughts that could possibly get them in trouble or stir people the wrong way. I just think that him talking about the situation the same day it happened as well as it being unscripted led to him say something that he probably didn't mean to say in the way he said it. Now I don't know him personally so I can't speak on his behalf, but I've been watching the channel for a couple of years and I do believe he's a good person. He would have had every right to shoot at a possible thief doing something really shady on his property even if afterwards he found out he wasn't a real threat. But, he didn't and when the situation was de-escalated he was glad he didn't because he was most likely just an idiot that made a few mistakes

      the big difference between a bear and a person is that the bear is going to attack you really ONLY if it wants to eat you or protect itself or cubs, people will/do atack others for a multitude of unfathomable reasons if they are crazy or simply for a watch, ring, $, ect. I'm going out on a limb and will say that I don't believe he would have shot the guy if he was running AWAY from him.
      long story short is that it's easier to trust and figure out the intention of a bear than a person

    I think you handled that situation as professionally as possible. When someone is on your property without notice 1,000 things are going through your head at a the minute. Out of all the ways that could of gone that was probably the best. Where I come from you don't go on to someones property unless you have permission. Even if they called you before hand and said it is fine, every person that provides a service always in my cases have knocked to at least check if someone is home so they know that they will be working if they are home. Even with the surprise of him being on the roof you still gave him the benefit of the doubt and didn't point it right as his body.

You know I carry every day and certainly firearms are an integral part of my home protection. But I gotta say I really can't imagine seeing this as a mortal threat in the middle of the day enough to have actually considered shooting the guy, regardless of local statutes. He was on your house not in it or in any plausible postions which could be construed as trying to get in, not to mention unarmed and trapped on a roof. If he reacted any other way you would have shot him? Jeff: "wtf are you doing on my roof?" Guy (who's having a moody day) "I'm Santa here to deliver early xmas gifts you homo what does it look like? If you don't put that piece away I'm gonna come down there and shove it up your ass.". Jeff: bang bang bang? Being silly but that could easily have happened.

    I love a lot of your videos Cutlerylover but I am shocked that you said "if he got scared and like ran or something, I would have f****n shot that guy". This is why so many people are disturbed with all the gun owners and laws in America. If someone is running away scared you are willing to shoot them in the back. That is absurd. Even if they were robbing the place don't you think a life is worth more than some possessions. You talk about how high the responsibility level is at the end of the video . If shooting someone in the back who is running away from you is your idea of a high level of responsibility then I suggest you need to really examine your ideals.

    • @pac6010

      The law is the law. If its legal to shoot someone on your property for trespassing or trying to break in then its legal. The criminals know the laws on use of force just like we do. So it they decide to do it anyways that means they are willing to die and thus a dangerous person. If you shoot a criminal you just did society a great service. That's the most moral thing you can do imo.
      Today hes trying to break in to your house and tomorrow who knows. Maybe he goes on to beat, rape or murder someone else and you could have stopped him. Then you have to live with that.

    • @scottecooke
      @scottecooke 8 лет назад +7

      drtrolish Saying it is legal too so therefor it is ok is a load of crap. Slavery used to be legal. Sure you could get away with it because the law was on your side but it is still a highly immoral act. Same with shooting someone in the back trying to run away from you. And you can't act based on what someone might do in the future you can only act based on what they are doing at the time.

      In your world maybe its immoral.
      In my world the only good criminal scumbag is a dead one.
      If the law allows you to use force in that instance then thats all that matters.
      Want to avoid that situation ? Then don't be a criminal scumbag, its really that simple.
      This ain't Europe over here my friend. Best learn that.

    • @scottecooke
      @scottecooke 8 лет назад +1

      drtrolish Lol I don't live in Europe and I don't plan on robbing anyone so don't bother with the "best learn that". More matters than just what the law says like I said slavery used to be legal. I guess if it was legal is that still all that would matter to you or do you view it as wrong still. There are plenty of example I could come up with to make the same point. But perhaps it doesn't matter. I believe human life is valuable independent of behavior. If they are just running away from being scared then that is absurd to shoot them. If they are running away with your kid then I have no issue with shooting then.

    "Depending on how he reacted, I may have shot him."
    An explanation for those who don't get it: It's entirely possible he COULD have reacted by reaching for a gun, or for something else that made it look like he was reaching for a gun. The chimney sweep was the one in the wrong here. Yes, it would have been tragic if he had been shot, but it would have been his fault (if head had "reached").
    Jeff is NOT saying "oh, if he hadn't said who he was, I would have shot him", or "oh, if he had started doing the waltz while making grunting noises, I would have shot him".
    As for later in the video, when he said he would have shot him if he "ran or something", reference the annotation at the start. Clearly he was thinking more about the "or something" part than the "if he ran" part.

A pistol shouldn't leave the holster until you're ready to use it, and if you've no idea what is going on you're probably not ready to use your gun.

      Castle doctrine allows you to use deadly force on any intruders to your of your property for any reason. You actually don't even have to say anything to them. You can legally shoot and unarmed human being who is intruding in your home or outdoor property. Trespassing is illegal and is widely considered as a threat.

      +B33fJ3rk33 sorry man, but your wrong. You have to feel your life is being threatened. You can't just shoot an unarmed individual for no reason.

    I appreciate your response to the part about not shooting anyone running away. Thank you for your understanding. I also understand your reference to he "Castle Doctrine". But as an attorney, I'd advise everyone to get competent legal advice on that. It really isn't about protecting mere property....although one can legally assume that if someone forcibly enters your "castle", to take your stuff...they also intend to inflict bodily harm or death to an occupant, and that such a presumed threat is "imminent" under most circumstances. But be careful with that assumption. There are many misconceptions about PA's Castle Doctrine. I write this with all respect to you, Cutlerylover, since I believe you are a fine gentleman with much to offer the knife and firearms community. I would urge you to keep up the good work. All my best to you and yours (P.S. I have about 30 or 40 knives I wouldn't mind trading....stay in touch.)

      He agreed he would not do that. He explained that in the video, he did not articulate that part of the story sufficiently well. It was a misunderstanding. I believe he truly IS a responsible, law-abiding, gun owner. I continue to respect him.

      Stephen Ciavarri He didn't actually explain what he really meant. All he said is that he didn't explain it clearly, and didn't try to explain what he was really trying to say.

      He DID say, however, that he.... "would never shoot anyone running away from me or shoot someone in the back". That is good enough for me.

    What a lot of online chairborne operators don't realize is that even if you are "justified" in shooting someone you are still going to face a long expensive trial to prove your innocence. Hey if you are willing to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees because you killed a guy to defend your roof then be my guest.

    as a conceal carry owner, you cannot legally pull your gun or shoot unless your life is put in danger. If they were running away, even with a knife in hand, there is no danger to you and you cannot shoot. if you catch them breaking into your house and yell, they turn and run, you cannot shoot. Only when you are being put in the life or death situation. even getting involved in a situation that is not direct to you, is a very gray area. In this situation he did everything right. except I would have called the cops and let them work out the detail of wrong address. Odd his truck was parked so far away. We've had this happen in our neighborhood and it was a cable company. Had flyers and note book and outfit. would come up and knock. no one answered, kicked in the door, grab and run. if someone did answer, then had an excuse and go through a cable speal then would leave.

    Dude! You way over reacted to that situation. I'm sorry Jeff but that whole situation was stupid all the way around. If he would have ran you would have shot him? How is him running away a threat? The dude was on your roof with a chimney sweep, you were on the ground. So you were both what 20-30 feet away from each other? He was not a threat in that moment. He was not being aggressive. Why would you even start to raise your weapon in that situation? You are BOTH very lucky you didn't shot him. I realize at the time you were trying to understand the situation but did you feeling as if your life or someone else's was in jeopardy. Did you feel a high risk of harm to yourself? I was with you all the way up to you seeing the dude on your roof with a chimney sweep and you raising your weapon. I am glad you had your revolver. I'm glad you were ready. And I am very glad you did not shoot him.

    You did well Jeff. (Hope I spelled your name correctly)
    I would have acted similarly because I have skylights and I've known of two businesses local to me that have been robbed through their skylights, one was a pharmacy and the other was my favorite local gun store. So yeah, I'd have wanted to know why he was on my roof too and there would have been a firearm in my hands too.
    A couple of years ago a black bear cub was stuck in the redwoods across the street from me. He fell from the tree and started... well kinda bawling. Momma came crashing through the woods while I trucked it into the house. Luckily my neighbors dogs were inside that day.

      He lives secluded from most other people, this isn't some busy are where lots of foot traffic is. He heard something on his roof while he was inside his house, he comes out and sees a guy on his roof. Whatever that guy's intentions were, his immediate instinct would be to protect his house and himself. If his wife were in there, she would've gotten frightened too. With a house like that with a potential entry point, that's an actual possibility, especially if this guy was casing his house.
