I heard Ted Lindsey say once that you could throw a handful of rice at Terry Sawchuk and he would stop or catch every grain. That’s incredible. God Bless Terry Sawchuk.

He looked so good in that Red Wing sweater
He'll live on forever we'll never forget Terry in Detroit
He'd still be top goalie in the league today tracking the puck all over the ice the way he did through the forwards and defencemen
Well before my time but who wouldn't want to be on this guys team
    A legend
Him and Bower together in Toronto
No wonder they won it all
Last time the Leafs won the cup 67'
Thanks for sharing your story Grapes
Bernier stopped 50 plus shots against Dallas on saturday. Would have put a smile on Sawchuks face. I know you know what goaltending brings to the hockey team
And I know no one is watching Detroit but we've had lots of guys develop and grow this season as young players and we are trimming the fat. Don't be surprised to see us back in the thick of it next year. Like the way Columbus did it. Lunch pails in hand
I'm not afraid to say it because it's there
I know The Wings are near and dear to your heart Don. I remember Stevie Y thinking of you and Rose the night he won the cup. Class all the way. A good Canadian boy!
We want to make you proud Don
    Go Wings Go!

For me the Red Wings have 2 GOATS. Howe overall and Sawchuk in net. And I'm not a Red Wings fan.

I agree. The talent pool was loaded. Put it this way , Johnny Bower , The great Toronto Goalie , played in the minors for 12 years before the NHL. Came up at 33 years old and proceeded to win 4 Stanley Cups and retired at 45 years old. The minor leagues then , were tougher than some NHL Teams now. For sure.

Sawchuk had 95% of his Shutouts against Original 6 teams. All of em at one time or another we’re powerhouses. He shut out guys like Richard, Beliveau Hull , Geoffrion , Mahovlich , just to name a few. Marty Brodeur played against a lot of weak teams due to expansion and basically a thinned out talent pool. Not to mention Sawchuk played half his career injured. Inferior goalie equipment in his time. I think the league as a whole was a lot tougher. Only so many roster spots to be had. Goalie competition was fierce. That’s why the AHL In the 40s and Fifty’s was a great league. A lot of NHL Caliber players. One example was John Bower who didn’t come to the NHL until he was 33. He was Sawchuks fellow goalie on the 67 Maple Leafs Cup Winning Team. Ironically that was the Last time the leafs won the Cup. Kinda funny.
