0:38 Hard Relay Mario ☆☆☆☆⭒ - sorbetfan & tomasz_niecik
okay so, this was a LONG session, and so I took the production decision of really focusing the editing on successes and learning moments, and later on adding a bit of a more traditional montage as a reminder of what is going on between attempts. just feels like the most logical way to put this out
after the session I was talking with yipples and apparently he considers this the hardest level in the game for him! this is somewhat a relief because 1- it means this is normal for me to struggle and 2- it implies most of the rest of the game won't be like this. 'the middle of the star road' is kind of a weird spot for this kind of difficulty burst but, you know, gotta put it somewhere right

"so raocow what was the hardest part of the level?"
"The red stem plant hitbox."
"And the easiest?"
"Making lunch."

Nier in the Nonsense playlist? That's nons-
That's inexplicable!
i feel bad for laughing as much as i did when the charlie got stuck throwing the other way /after/ rao got the last dragon coin
Very nice job standing fast and beating this brutal level!
tomasz_niecik and sorbetfan can be really evil!
I think on my first time beating this level I needed over 4 hours, so you did better than me!
RE: the description; I'm glad to hear that Jolpe has assuaged your fears. Hope, even when misguided, is a wonderful thing to possess
wow, that was brutal. the music practically forces you to be calm though. great choice!
I don't know. I think personally, I might've muted the game and put on some black metal after an hour or two.
Also, looking forward to the 5☆ levels.
It had the opposite effect on me... and I was only watching!
well played cao of rao, very bold of you to continue from the midway
hell yeah, pumped my fist when you finished the level. that was a crazy hard level.
This is one of the reasons why I like hard levels, for one beating it myself feels super good and then seeing others beating it is just so nice :D
oh neat! Planet Puzzle league music! "Bodkin Point"
Played the heck out of that game!
The music choice here is certainly a decision that was made. I don't think I'd be able to do an hour of this. This video is enough of it. raocow, much respect to you for persevering with it.
The song is Bodkin Point, from Planet Puzzle League. 🎵
Thank you, I was gonna ask
@@mmmmnism Love all the music in that game. Had to pull up the original tune after to hear it unbroken 🤣
I love panel de pon and puzzle league, now if only Nintendo remembered it existed...
@@green929392 At least they remembered it long enough to put it on the US version of SNES Online.
thank ye!
i know a few people didn't care for the song, but i was absolutely charmed!
maybe, not, for 3 - 4 hours; but, a nice 10-minute sesh should be alright!
i hope smwc has this on deck
That's a spicy meatball
what an episode
That was some relay hard Mario!
21:47 Hi Video Cow!
Wow, it's been a long time since I watched truly hard Mario that didn't feel like Kaizo or a straight up "pit" like level, but this level genuinely had me constantly stunned just ... watching. Like, I would see a setup and just be straight up stunned at how the level just absolutely, in no way, ever takes it easy on the player. Of course it's by design, I get that. But like, holy crap. Every single screen of this level just does not relent whatsoever. Everything is extremely precise and demanding close to perfection. It doesn't have to be that way - plants could be green instead of red, ceilings could be less bonkable, landing spots could be more forgiving. But they never are, not once do they feel made to give respite to the player.
Sometimes you see a challenging level and you feel like it's made - ultimately - for the player to feel good having accomplished something truly challenging. The challenge is a means towards being actually satisfying in a way easy levels cannot be. This... may be done with that in mind, but the struggle would have been way too much for me. It looks so, so absolutely relentless.
You're telling me that plant stem color determines whether a plant respects personal space or not? That's just Nonsense!
Due to the weird route I took through the game, I did this one without red switch. Surprisingly, it’s still possible to get the midpoint mushroom without it, just more annoying!
Hello, and welcome to another exciting level of Block Corner Adventures!
Jesus, over 3 hours. I think I would have liked 2 more midpoints or something in that level, wow. I am sweating just watching this xD
Sheesh, talk about a sky place dangerous. Timing 2 things together is usually pretty reasonable, but it felt like this level was pretty often asking you to time 3 times together which can get really mean.
One-tile precision is one thing, but this level is also occasionally asking for half-tile precision.
It's four and a half stars of difficulty out of five via multiple methods, basically. It's not hard in just one way, it's hard in almost all ways.
congrats!!! I think this level might be easier for those accustomed to kaizo-y, precision jumps, and importantly, standing on the corners of pipes. (It took me about 50 minutes to beat.)
In honesty, this was one of my favorite levels-- each setup felt really good to beat, and sometimes one would live unexpectedly (e.g. 16:59) and it feels amazing.
The only issue I had was the jump onto the expanding turn block bridge, which was near impossible when big. I felt that could have been more lenient.
So many congrats for beating this true challenge of a level!
Jesus.
I feel bad for everyone involved
Death count: 560 (at least 101 today)
Goal tape average: 891 / 41 = 21.732 (11 / 1 = 11 today)
(0:21) I hope that, for your sanity, you decided to try bringing in outside power ups for this level. I remember entering it with a cape, and that made the level very reasonable.
(0:52) First death today already. You must have patience, young cow.
(1:16) I call shenanigans, because once again, I hate this version of the red-stem plant.
(1:31) I guess I'll just preface today's death count with "at least" then, and simply count whatever deaths I see. (I can't even use your life amount to count unshown deaths, due to your lives not decreasing when you die here.)
(4:06) I call shenanigans. You clearly touched the bottom of that mushroom. But, for some reason, the hitboxes for items in this game don't stretch down as far as you'd think they should.
(5:55) Yeah, I don't like those plants either.
(6:41) You're probably meant to slide jump there for more horizontal speed.
(6:53) Crazy through! I just cape-glided through that part.
(7:15) Curse 2-tile high Mario and his inability to get into a 2-tile high opening...
(7:41) Totally useless. Would've been really nice if this block could've given you a Cape Feather instead, but nah...
(8:19) Nice, don't have to worry about that Yoshi coin anymore.
(8:41) Start of the winning run of the first half.
(10:24) Amazing accuracy on that landing next to the plant.
(10:53) Zwee! Took at least 30 deaths to reach this midpoint.
(11:47) Really, game? The plant wasn't even out of its pipe at all there! Shenanigans!
(12:17) I don't like that they can hit you even if just a couple pixels are showing.
(14:47) That's sort of amazing how you jumped through there without touching the Chuck at all. Crazy through! :P
(15:00) Whoa, almost accidentally clicked exit there. Although, that wouldn't have really hurt you all that much. Just -1 life and having to return to the map before trying again, without losing any real progress.
(16:00) "The jump didn't..." What didn't the jump do? Find out next time! :P
(16:30) That jump looks super tight for an enlarged plumber that's not equipped with a soft and fluffy mantle.
(16:59) Impressive!
(17:28) #doablethough
(17:38) Aw, nuts!
(18:47) At least 43 deaths after 17:38... Start of the winning run of the second half.
(19:00) MEGA KILL!!
(20:45) YO!!! All Yoshi coins get!
(21:10) Thank you for scrolling away to get Charlie to pitch to the left again there.
(21:28) VICTORY!!! Well, props to you for not resorting to outside power ups! Maybe I should make a video showing just how much saner this is if you bring in a cape.
(21:46) Unfortunately, no capes allowed in that 4½-star level, but you can still bring in Fire Flowers if you want.
Made a video showing how a cape makes Hard Relay Mario a bit easier.
Video title: "Nonsense - Hard Relay Mario with Cape"
🟢Hard Relay Mario [ 10 | DC10 ]:
Welcome to *THE LEVEL!*
This is 10 half stars (5 stars) imo. (I've beaten an official 5 stars level btw.)
Because no savestates-practice had been used, raocow's smw skills has raised up a lot! Congrats! 👏👏👏
It did take me around 4h playtime, this level is super hard but...
...also it has big mario unfriendliness like (16:20); I was trying to pass this part with big mario and my progress on the level was stucked, until I gived up and purposefully taking damage before this jump, unlocking progress.
So yeah, good but flawed level.
Tomorrow (and probably until a long time), easier levels!
Edit: I forgot to say it but this level shows that it doesn't need to be daredevil (or kaizo) to be extremely hard.
"Hard Relay Mario" is the name of a very old (like 20 years) SMB1 Kaizo Hack
It's very much in the same ballpark of "Super Mario Frustration" and the like were
I don't see how the stage itself really connects to it besides the very high difficulty, but that's not really a problem.
thomas sneezek
THE CORNERS
"Hard Relay" (albeit you could argue the enemies are stuck in a relay) doesn't really convey the levels saveur, it's more of a "Hard Timing Mario" or "Hard Airtime Mario"
jesus, without even bringing in 2 capes
also that other 4.5 star level isn't as brutal as this one
Without watching tomorrow's video yet I think it would be really funny if the game didn't have any five-star difficulty levels and this was just the top.
Congrats beating it without cheating. Impressive.
I can't believe it's not Kaizo!
i suppose: the next ASM for mario world could, indeed, be an in-level music selector
_irrespective_ of whatever song happens to be playing, i know i'd appreciate the option of switching it, should i find myself tired of it
rao:
i appreciate your more \ less maintaining your neutrality throughout the experience
ah!
what i appreciate more is that, apparently, you weren't hit with any "oh, this may be an `angrycow´-kinda episode for you - just a heads up" advisories
from what i observed:
sometimes, granting yourself the confidence to move boldly may determine the difference between a few minutes and a few hours spent
(i probably should apply this philosophy to myself)
uh-oh
This is an example of the kind of level that doesn't quite do it for me. I think the balance between expected deaths due to lack of foresight just wasn't quite there. While not outwardly antagonistic to the player like a Kaizo level would be, it didn't do a whole lot of good telegraphing either to show the player what is expected for the first couple of deaths on each challenge.
To be clear though, I have a negative bias against levels that expect you to lose in order to learn that also don't *generously* checkpoint you. Once you've beaten a section 1000 times, why must you beat it the 1001st time just to progress to the thing that is actually causing you trouble.
I personally liked the music but could understand how it could be grating for some and the choice of colour palette was also nice in my opinion.
Hard levels are almost always designed in this way though so in this case I'm likely in the minority opinion and that's okay.
I'm with you. The level is clearly built with Small Mario in mind, despite giving you powerups; and its philosophy is undoubtedly "dying = challenging"
People don't get how "learn by dying" is more tolerable in things like Meat Boy and Celeste due to how the games are structured.
This is the second time I skipped entire segments of the video, in spite of it being viewed at 2X speed, due to not being able to stand seeing the same segments over and over again.
Good gracious, we are Kaizo level now. This is more like 4 and a hell level...
4.5 Stars, Huh...
I genuinely thought I was gonna hear some French cursing today.
In my head I was constantly saying in the beginning "Raocow, the duck jump! Use it's powers!"
And yes, the red plants are kinda bad.
This would be a never turn the game on again from me I think
Oh god uhhhh.... It's ONETWO right??
Also, raocow said this was "one unit shy of max difficulty," but I can't be the only one expecting like one super-hard level in the postgame or something to get a 6, can I? Even if it's just for a joke, this feels like the kind of hack that would do something like break its rating scale.
I think 4+ stars justifies constant save states.
No offense to composers and likers but this music is brainmeltingly awful to me. Barely could tolerate for the duration of the video, would go insane if I had to listen to it for three hours. Kudos for perseverance
Sounds like an opportunity for an in-game jukebox someday where the player can change whatever music they're listening to.
Or separate volume controls for background music and sound effects: something standard for PC games nowadays but un-heard-of quality of life for an SNES game.
When it's just those same 4 notes over and over, it makes me wanna throw things I hate it so much!
huh, i really like it
Depends on the context. On the surface, it’s p. innocuous and wouldn’t bother anyone, but if you’re hearing it while you’re grinding your face on stucco for three hours like this, it’s gonna become associated with Geneva convention-violating torture pretty rapidly.
Sloppy gameplay today
this level is way harder than it might look in video
sloppy work as usual raocow... the gameplay was horrid, the timings were ugly as usual, the first part was empty, then going
And the need for this comment was what, exactly? I'm all for constructive feedback but essentially saying "You're bad, so sad" adds nothing to the discussion and only serves to try to make somebody feel bad... Should follow the old adage 'If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all'
raocow is sloppy sometimes, this is not one of those videos though. L comment.
