I'M BACK MAN - so sorry it's been so long since I posted my last wee vid, this one honestly became such a huge undertaking so unexpectedly! At first it was going to just be a quick vid about the QK80 but then as I dug a bit more it became more about understanding the definition of "premium" over time. Idk if many people are reading this, but I am thinking about either starting up another second channel or making a sub series on this one where I'd love to break down camera stuff, filmmaking techniques, running a creative business, etc etc. Food for thought!

I love how you tackled the topic of what is considered premium, because many people only consider a board premium if it comes with a high price tag. Like when people considered the PE foam sound of the Jelly Epoch a premium sound until the community realized that the PE foam sound was an attainable sound. The keyboard community has a habit of confusing price+scarcity with premium.
Because a high price is in the dictionary definition of premium, which I think actually reflects how this word is most frequently used. There are other words you can use if you don't want to imply a high price.
@@haomingli6175 Dictionary definition of premium would be around insurance policies, shares of a stock, an additional price added to the ordinary price of a good, etc. Not necessarily "HIGH" price. The truth is the term premium is just misused. If someone said they paid a "premium" for an aluminum case keyboard, or for tri-mode PCB, or for a knob, or for a PVD weight, or whatever then THAT would make sense. You are paying EXTRA over the ordinary price for something. That doesn't speak to the quality or even worth beyond monetary of that thing you paid a premium for. You might pay a premium for something that is actually of LOWER quality or makes the product WORSE. They are plenty of examples of that. In the end this is a problem with societies use of language, something that has continued to get worse over time.

This is a pretty good video essay about what "premium" is. I agree with the common conclusion as well, I think what makes a keyboard premium is the thought that went behind it and I definitely think that great ideas are worth more than CNC aluminum.

hey man, i suggest you cover up the flex cut with uhmwpe tape, it change the sound drasticly on zero foam built, cover up pcb flex cut both bottom and top pcb and bottom for plate, qk80 can be alot of hassle to do because of their weird flex cut but i can guaranteed the board will sound much fuller.
in addition, do the force-break mod.

One thing that most people in this hobby do not understand is that this should be about the typing experience. I hate this budget king, premium nonsense. People complain about GMK, others love it. People still like budget keebs. Me for instance, get the most satisfaction if I make the worst sounding board sound awesome and fun to use. I like wireless, some people don't. We just have to agree to disagree for some things. Just like Dillon said, who I am to disrupt your enjoyment. The whole point of this hobby is for us to love our keyboards and enjoy using them, and to attract other people into doing that as well.

IMO a premium keyboard has to do with the quality of the finishing, the complexity of the design (to CNC) and sound design. Most premium boards have a design feature that would cost a lot more to manufacture and quality control over simple blocks. The F2-84's weight is a good example of that, and also has a unique effect on the acoustics too. I don't believe price is as big of a factor as some people would think when it comes to determining a board as "premium".
Absolutely amazing video once again. This video had me literally clapping at some of the cinematographic choices. I've definitely taken some notes for my own channel. Well done.
Also, about the description, I think it's safe for you to upload camera stuff on this channel since it's all part of the one tech niche. I think you have the potential to scale up pretty well by covering multiple ideas in tech whilst using your format since this kind of content is rare on RUclips. I personally like watching your videos because of how well they are made.

I think for me, premium in the keyboard hobby is best embodied by focus. I think the common theme in budget boards that are “less premium” have a ‘one size fits all’ kinda approach, where they’re trying to make every potential customer happy and find something they can enjoy. Boards typically regarded as premium are laser focused on a purpose or a style or sound profile. Premium boards have an inspiration, or they have a specific one gimmick that makes it worthwhile to keep as a premium board. Things like QC and premium ano just can’t be the differentiating factor anymore, when QC has gotten so much better across the board.

Imagine it’s a one-off, small batch run by a studio that’s got classy branding and whatnot, exactly the kind of thing enthusiasts drool over. Would you think it’s more or less premium then?

The line is psychological.
There's a bunch of manufacturers who are making high quality boards for cheap prices.
The elitists just need to admit that fact....instead they just keep moving the goal-posts. You get this in almost every hobby. The elitist type of people actively search for ways to elevate themselves over the 'peons' in the hobby. It's freaking ridiculous and ALL psychological.
The hobby is amazing now - whether you like foam, plates, materials, whatever. People need to stop pushing the whole "plateless and no foams is where it's at".
The facts are this: most premium boards have little reason for premium pricing anymore. Historically premium boards (from a few years ago) are now much cheaper due to Qwertykeys and other manufacturers.
The end.
Lol! No one hit the point of "what's premium," because literally none of them have obviously ever seen or had anything premium.
Most Americans believe that Apple is premium, and as an Italian it makes me laugh a bit. Gucci, Prada, Officine Panerai, Dolce and Gabbana and Versace are premium, and the cost is 20 times more than the most expensive keyboards on the market, and of infinitely worse materials.
Just think that some €1,200 glasses are made of acetate, so no, premium is not defined by the materials, every person in the luxury sector is perfectly aware of this.
First premium is mainly defined by the number of copies produced, which is stupid, but also logical, nothing produced in too many copies can be premium, because it cannot be ACCURATE and controlled.
Second the design, it must be something unique and immediately recognizable and linked to the reference brand. Thirdly, the advertising of the object and the company behind it, therefore the impression that it gives without even owning it.
Fourth the status symbol, that is the most empirical part, what people think when they see that object on you, in what status it aligns you.
Premium basically means absolutely nothing, yet it means everything. Most of the defined premium keyboards literally suck, the sound is ridiculous and also the design is literally a copy of a thousand other copies, apart for the Space. So when it comes to keyboards everyone should stop repeating that word "PREMIUM", but start talking about intrinsic value.
Nice vid and topic to post about. Premium I think for me has to do with quality, aka high standards in terms of make, material, finish & quality. And of course, in the keebs world, has to feel and sound great out of the box, without the need for modding really. Price can be justified, but I don't think it has to be highly priced to be premium.

Your brief point about how people are discussing why the Jane's so expensive vs people discussing how the QK boards are so cheap really caught my attention. I recently saw an argument in the comments of some video about the Chimera65 and how it's so expensive but the foam kit has to be purchased separately, and some people didn't like that. I think that circles back to your point about intent being a big part of the concept of "premium". Some of these more expensive boards were designed by the designers intentionally to not be used with foam, so they just choose not to include it. But if you're willing to buy into that product, yet you want foam, then surely you're willing to shill out a little more for the foam kit. And if you don't agree with that, you don't have to buy that board. Hopefully both budget and high-end enjoyers can eventually wrap their heads around the idea of intent and how it can play differently into different boards and how they're priced.
Like you said, at the end of the day, if you enjoy the product, no matter how much it costs, then it's premium to you, and no one can take that away from you. Thanks for the thought-provoking, content, Avi! :)

Love your vid production. I subscribed. This craft is premium as we can feel so much thought was put into this. It’s not just, “hey guys here’s my build for blabla and this is the soundtest.” Other keyboard creators I followed since day 1 I got into the hobby have this template. And I’m starting to get tired of it. But I understand them. It takes so much time to create a good video.

I actually disagree with your initial statement about the older QK boards not hitting “true premium” as I own all the older boards and anyone who has used or owns a QK65 would agree that the first one is always the best one.
