You are basically just feeling the thickness of the fingers. The thickness of the fingers is mostly determined by the weight of the copper on the RAM module. Printed circuit board traces and fingers are mostly made from copper - not gold. The tiny amount of gold that is plated onto the copper is not thick enough to be felt when running your finger over it. You are feeling the weight of the COPPER. I was involved in making PCB's for many years, and some had gold plated contacts, but many were not. I know how the process works.

Running your finger along the edge will only tell you how thick the copper is, not the gold plating.

What!? Ive never found fake gold in cpu scrap yet. Stannous tests dont lie. Its either copper or gold. Now the purity IS different, 18 and 10 k gold are used. Although im sure they will be using 5k gold soon. Still gold just not as pure.
