I agree that labels are detrimental if used as an excuse. We also tend to over label things or put too much emphasis on them. Even the people that fall under each label are all unique in various ways, even if they may share some similar traits or experiences. I do, however, think labels can be helpful (if professionally diagnosed in the case of mental disorders) in identifying why you're doing something so that you can develop ways to better work around problems you might be having. Having a label allows you to talk to others who might be experiencing the same thing and can often give people more confidence where maybe they just thought they were weird before. The important part is to not let those things become limitations (or your whole identity) and embrace the parts that make you unique.
Hey Phillip, do you know any color blind graphic artists? I am one and it’s something that plagues me a lot. So much so that I contemplate changing careers. Any thoughts?
I do know one color-blind graphic designer. I also have had color-blind clients and have had to design brand identity systems that are in spectrums that they can discern, so they can make color choices when posting their own brand's stuff - and not make 'mistakes'.
