  • Emmanuel Brings Joy & Judgment | Matthew 1:22-23; Isaiah 7-8 | City Harvest | Jacob Cherian
    Sermon Outline :
EMMANUEL: COMES TO COMFORT & CONFRONT
MATTHEW 1:22-23, ISAIAH 7-8 | DR. JACOB CHERIAN
Hymn: O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
12th century - Latin hymn - translated in the 19th-20th centuries.
Messianic expectation of Israel in exile.
Titles for Jesus: Emmanuel, Son of God, Wisdom from on High, Branch of Jesse’s Tree, Key of David, Desire of Nations - alluding to various texts in Isaiah (6:3; 11:1-2; 22:22), Haggai (2:7), and Luke (1:68).
He comes to ransom captive Israel!
Israel was, and still is, in exile.
    “Emmanuel” = Matthew 1:23 - Isaiah 7:14 (and also in 8:8, 10).
Back Story: He came in the context of ancient Israel.
Israel + Syria - Judah (Ahaz) - Judah panics.
Isaiah 7:14 - “Sign” - Emmanuel - a prince, when he is still a very young child. Israel and Syria will be judged by the Assyrians, as will Judah.
“Emmanuel” is both a positive and a negative sign.
Who is this “virgin” in Isaiah 7:14?
The Hebrew almāh = young woman.
However, the Greek translation of the OT (LXX) = parthenos = virgin (used by Matthew).
Jesus - a sign of the end of ancient ethnic Israel.
Jesus identified with sinful Israel - through the Baptism of John the Baptist.
He challenged the religious leadership of Israel and, like Isaiah, pronounced judgment on Jerusalem.
History reached its climax with the coronation of Jesus on the cross as The King of the Jews (in Israel’s place) - an unexpected fulfillment of the Hebrew Scriptures.
    Emmanuel will comfort us!
    Emmanuel will confront us!
In this powerful sermon, Dr. Jacob Cherian explores the profound message of Emmanuel-God with us-through the lens of Matthew 1:22-23 and Isaiah 7-8. Discover how Jesus comes to both comfort and confront, fulfilling the Messianic expectation of Israel in exile. Drawing from the ancient prophecy of Isaiah, this message reveals the dual role of Emmanuel as a sign of hope and judgment.
