Hi there, Unfortunately No, for the iMac 2019 21.5 inch model, it's not possible to remove only the front glass without removing the entire screen assembly.
During most of these iMac SSD and/or CPU upgrades, it not mentioned about replacing the clock battery while access is available during the motherboard removal. It's only a $5 or less cost for a CR2032 battery and they are normally only a 5 year shelf life on your motherboard, so replace it while you have access to it!
You can put an i9-9900, 64GB of RAM and any M.2 you want using an adapter. I think it's still a nice machine, especially due to the fact that you can run both an M.2 and a SATA SSD. Largest 2.5" SATA SSDs are 16TB and the largest M.2s are 8TB, meaning you could put up to 24TB of storage in this thing. It would be a good backup machine to put all of your files on. The Vega 20 is nice if you can find a model that has one, but if you cant any TB3 eGPU works just fine. 6900 XT is the maximum for macOS but even a 4090 on Windows 10 will do fine. Still a better deal than the Apple Silicon iMacs.
With the 21.5" 2019 iMac Apple has offered several different drive options to choose from. One can choose a standard HDD model shown in the video above. But they also carry a fusion version of this where the machine has both a HDD and a SSD that are fused/combined into one another to make a single drive, or there are a SSD version which has just the NVMe SSD installed. Here is a link to our PCIe SSD upgrade video for this machine so you can look into the location of the PCIe SSD. eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/imac-21-inch-2019-pciessd/
Why didn't you mention that the microphone is now not anymore at the top with the camera but on the bottom (to the right of the apple logo) and it is a very common failure that the sticky tape to mount the display can easily be put over the mic opening holes which takes out the microphone more or less completely? You need to gap out this area with the two tiny holes or else - no mic.
Can the SSD on the 2019 21.5" iMac be upgraded with an after market one? If I plan to upgrade it, should I order it from apple with a fusion drive or a 256gb SSD?
If you're OK with dealing with the glued-on screen, get the lowest capacity SSD and then upgrade with a 1TB. They're only about $100 these days, and often $80 on sale. Memory, as you can see, is a royal PITA to upgrade, and you're better off buying what you need. 8GB is plenty for routine use.
Hi, got this iMac. The USBC connections are kind of not working well, I think they’re too fart apart from the back “wall”. What a joke. That's a massive effort to 'possibly upgrade the RAM' on a 2019 21" iMac. That's it. after 25 years as an Apple Fan Boy, Tim Cook has busted my bubble--not his compensation of course, but my loyalty. I'm going back to Wintel. The elegance and edge is all long gone. How can anyone even consider a factory 8 GB RAM machine at double the Wintel price -- OR you can pay $1,000 more for Apple to put an acceptable amount of RAM in...? Done with the Apple ecosystem. And you know what, Tim Cook neither knows or cares. Buh-Bubble, I mean Buh-Bye... Look-out for those MAC sales numbers coming up in a few months. Unless there's a massive amount of dumb out there, I can't even imagine good sales news.
I agree. The so-called music is annoying and the teardown guy mumbles and ahhh's too much - my hearing is not too good and I could barely understand what he was saying. He needs a better microphone and lessons on public speaking.
Nice job, Apple - put the RAM on the backside of the f'n motherboard, so nobody can upgrade without taking the machine completely to pieces. A decent computer company would at least put an access panel in the back, if there was in fact any reason for this (other than forcing the purchase of grossly overpriced memory from Apple.) Sheer disgust is the main reason I've stopped buying from Apple. If I need anything, I get it used, on eBay or CL.
