I think it's beautiful and it's giving me goosebumps all the time, even after 25+ listens. It's very sublte, yet powerful, especially if you know the meaning of the lyrics and where she came from. I'm not often a fan of our Dutch entries, but this is probably my favorite together with Arcade.
I really like the song because the chorus instantly touches me (and I keep coming back to listen to it for that reason), but I can also understand what you mean, that it's lacking a bit in the verses and compared to other songs. Really happy to have found your channel btw :)
In the clip she gets confronted what happened, she got into an argument with her boyfriend, he drives off alone and dies. Her tattoo lights up and he appears as a ghost and she still feels deeply connected to him, after seeing his motorbike at the garage at the `braketest` sign she walks off and cries her eyes out and his presence inside her fades. (The light on her cheek) The Lyrics Translation: Do you know the feeling that your dream won't come true? are you ever scared it will always stay the same? I think it will be in the finals, probably top 10 but I see your point. The philosophy was: Less is more (impactful). That is not everybody's cup of tea. That is also why I don't think it will win, although singing pianissimo in head voice with breathiness is masterful. But nobody in Eurovision will notice that. I think it is a bit too sophisticated to be in the top three.
On first listen, I thought 'De diepte' was bland and that it was trying to make me feel something but wasn't quite getting there. I also have this sense of something missing and I think it's 1. the lyrical and vocal content does not quite match the instrumentation in emotional intent and 2. because of 1, the song pulls me in different directions and so doesn't really go anywhere. I feel like I'm in the warm comfort of her living room rather than anywhere deep. When I read the lyrics, I get that it's about grief at the stage before acceptance but after the intense, acute pain of loss has worn off. The idea of being in the depths lends to associations of being consumed or immersed, and I think this could be introduced musically through a legato bassline (where, correct me if I'm wrong, it is currently strummed guitars). The kind of richness I'm looking for as in say The Beatles' 'Yesterday', Wye Oak's 'Fish', or Sharon van Etten's 'When the Sun Comes Up'. That could harmonise with her voice in the verses, it can swell, fade away, go higher into the melody etc. I get that she is going for a minimal indie folk aesthetic, so maybe sustained piano ? I would have thought solo cello too but that might be too lush. To be clear, on subsequent listens, I can hear that the melody chorus is quite nice and her vocals are beautiful. Also, thank you Rachel for the opportunity to think deeply about the music, which I might not have done before !
Hi Rachel! I completely agree with you about your opinion. I love your gentleness, even when you say something negative about a song and the way you express yourself. It is obvious that you know a lot about music and you are one out of two people whom i am listening to on you tube who makes reaction videos because there are many other but they don't have your knowledge. So please keep doing what you are doing
It’s so subtle and that is its power. But I get it’s not for everyone though. This will get top 10 at eurovision I feel. But it will make the final for sure!
I might add this on to my Dutch music playlist and maybe even check out their other songs, but at the same time I can't see this doing super well in the competition. I was waiting for an explosion that never came, some stronger element to really grab my attention as a good Eurovision song should do to get a top score, but this stayed subtle all the way through. I didn't get the whole story behind the lyrics, but the parts I understood seemed to fit the tone. So yes, beautiful, artistic, easy to listen to, but too easy to forget wheb competing against many of the others.
Great that you give your honest opinion, rather than just praising every single entry because it will get more likes. I also didn't like this song on first listen, but it's really growing on me. Been stuck in my head for days hahah
I am quite late to your reactions (quite a bit actually) but Shane from ShanesEurovisionReview recommended your channel to me recently. I have been working my way through your videos and I just had to comment on your review of my favourite song of the contest this year. Along with Groot, you have both really enhanced my enjoyment of Eurovision this year. I don't know too much about the technical side of music and it has been really interesting to learn the reasons why you may be drawn to certain entries musically more than others. I look forward to watching the rest of your reviews.
I see many people here defending this song by saying that it grows on you, and you'll need to hear it a few more times. Of course any of us here are likely to have heard at least some of the songs by the time of the competition, but most of the people I know only watch the main competition, some even skip the semifinal and jump straight to the final night. That's what I used to do until a couple of years ago too, and even now I don't listen to even half of the songs in advance, just the ones from my favourite countries plus those everyone is talking about. So if a song needs to grow on you, it's not likely to be noticed by the voting masses, which means they may get high jury score but lose on the audience vote.
I must admit that at first it didn't transmit anything to me but then on the second listen I fell in love and I can't stop listening to it. It's a sad but beautiful song
Great review, thx! Imho the song is a start, a blueprint. It deserves a climax, lyrics for the yahoodada (let baby grow up) and an independent composition of luscious mid 60s violin arrangements.

The song tells about Den Hollander's most personal memories. According to Den Hollander, "It's a tribute to the sadness and memories that you carry with you. Everyone experiences difficult times in their lives. That's something we all have in common and I hope [people] will feel less alone when [they] listen to the song".
I loved Growing Up is Getting Old last year. This song gives me similar vibes. It is a soft, vulnerable song about mental health and depression. I think this is beautiful and vulnerable. It definitely isn't something to like on the first listen but add it to your playlist and you will probably find yourself repeating listens because it is just pleasant.
Thought I was the only one that just randomly jumped in the fridge at some ungodly hour! Tbh, I thought you'd enjoy this more, but 7/10 is a fine mark. However, I do get your point, I was a little underwhelmed during my first listen, but then I heard it a second time, then a third, and it just got better. I think it could go either way, but I'm happy that they went for this song - it's kind of minimalist, and I think it's accessible to most audiences without it being "watered down pop".
Yeah I do like the minimalist vibe of the song, it’s definetly well produced. I just felt it was lacking in some thicker vocal texture, maybe some harmonies in the verses/background vocal chords? Idk. I still think it’s good and a quality entry from The Netherlands once again :)
I don't think she put this together to win the ESC, but to connect. I think it will, and the juries will give it points. Meanwhile, Brividi is a masterpiece, so to compare it to that song is harsh.
I agree with most things you said but the audience at home is not as educated as you are so they will care about the catchy parts and staging. And the more you listen to it the better it will get, especially if you know the lyrics
i think you have to listen to the song a couple of times, but then listen completely, the melody is so catchy too me that it stuck in my head immidiatly. Also i see many reactor appriciate the way how the Duch always seem to find a way too send a different song that don't suit ESC. Like its Authentic,
I was there at the semifinals, and I instantly liked the song, she was my favourite. But than, listening it at home, I didn't feel the emotion; In live, the voice got way more resalted from the beat so it was way mote catchy. In the original version instead, the voice is still good but kinde gets lost. That's waht I tought, thanks for the video!
I'm so glad someone else shares my opinion on this (at least after a first listen)! I initially put my not connecting with this song down to the lyrics. For reference, I don't speak Dutch, and I love a good native language song. It's not that I couldn't understand the lyrics. It's that I felt the use of so many nonsense syllables one after the other (dadadadadada into the oohs) hindered the storytelling, or at least the way the storytelling came through for me. Again, having no specific words in lyrics is fine. It's a well-used technique to fill a melody line when words wouldn't fit. I actually think the dadadadas work (even if they probably would've been more impactful for me with lyrics in there... I felt really uncomfortable and like I was intruding when Stien was just about crying while singing something that lyrically sounded like filler), my main issue is with the oohs. Oohs are usually used in pop music as very small pieces of melody filler, space for riffs, or after an important lyric to give the listener time to digest the lyric without needing to move on to more lyrics. These uses all, for the most part work. But this song doesn't use the oohs in any of these three ways. It's a significant piece of melody filler, and it doesn't feel justified to me because it's not emphasising or letting any point sink in (at least the first time) because it comes in right after another significant piece of melody filler (the dadadas) and at the start of the chorus, which should begin by creating a new statement or musical idea (in both music and lyrics). It's really a shame because I love aspects of the instrumentation for this piece (although I do agree that more bass or strings would have been great) and in terms of genre it's right up my alley. I don't begrudge her the high placing, obviously I'm the exception here and a lot of other people connected with the song, which is great.
I agree with you that Brividi catch youre emotions , buth if you have listen this more , you are gonna find this good , i think this two songs are the best songs this year !!
I think it's really beautiful and that more instruments or voice would break the softness, unlike you I don't really like 'Brividi' but I really like this one even if they are both quality songs so in the end it's just a matter of taste
I definitely agree with you on that, Rachel. It's just that, as far as I'm concerned, when a 'good' song needs a hell of a staging to go somewhere near to becoming a 'great' song, it means it's just a 'good' song in the best of cases. Maybe my expectations on Stien were just too high...
We’re on the same boat. I like the song but it’s missing something. It’s calm and relaxing and I like that they used their language but it does not get me, it’s just not something I’d put on my playlist. I was a little disappointed when it came out, its style is simply not for me, I’d give it a 6/10. P.S. I love your videos and how you point out the technical details of every song, hugs from Italy 🇮🇹
Thank you for your reaction, also about Jeangu from last year. Have met him in august last year even, have a picture with him together. Also i saw Stefania last thursday in a tv studio where i was. She performed for Greece last year although she is half Dutch. And if you want to know the lyrics during the song.. Highly Combustible have a reaction with the song and there you can see the lyrics with the song together.. ruclips.net/video/OUn-BKMCA-w/видео.html
Contrary to some of the comments - I agree. Well, my musical education is not as strong as yours, but I have a few good years of studying jazz guitar and some University years in music technologies. The track has great production value, its well mixed, produced, filmed - all the marbles are great on those notes. But as a listener, I cant help but feel something missing - it just doesnt pop for me. It might be instruments, it might be the build up - I dont know. I just know you dont deserve all the backlash you are getting. The song's a great listen, I just dont think its a winner.
With all these extra instruments is maby your version of the song, this is her version... 🙂 Maybe it is a grower, the best songs are growers. Strange but after another one very tasty!!
@Serbio en Barcelona hi! So the subtitles are written in English, but there’s an option to ‘auto translate’ in RUclips studio to a long list of languages. Hope that helps :)
i hate dutch music, think it's terrible, but despite my dislike for dutch music i think this is a brilliant song, 10 out of (s)10😄 Ukraine is going to win, and rightly so, but I hopes for our country, 2nd place. (secretly I hope first place but Ukraine needs all the moral support there is )
This is not a good track…. No it’s a GREAT track. It’s absolutely brilliant but it needs a few listenings. I was totally hooked after te 2nd time I heard the song. Best song on ESC this year.
After 40 seconds you have a general idea of the style the song is following and can more or less say if it’s getting you or not. That might not be true with songs that reach their climax after more than 40 secs but it’s not this song’s case since it stays pretty much the same all the way through the 3 minutes.
How can you not love this masterpiece, the feeling and sad vibe is amazing the whole song is taking me on a journey its so pure, so if u dont like this you dont understand music
@@Mrfinnnn A music degree LITERALLY means you understand music in the academic sense. Waiting for your pubes to grow and exposing the fact that you're only able to understand music chauvinistically doesn't help your case my friend. Fijne avond nog ...
Even with training, you can't take away biases and personal taste. To say she doesn't understand music because she doesn't feel the same way about it as you is short sighted. I don't agree with everything in the review but I get it's her OPINION. She's not convincing you not to like the song.
Thank you everyone for being so open to diversity of opinion and willing to engage with my criticisms as well as my praises for this song :) I’m sure it will be a grower, and I’ll keep listening to it over time! Peace x

The live version has slightly more and heavier percussion. So, maybe that makes it a bit better (for me anyway). ruclips.net/video/FkcR-zI-0Wk/видео.html It seems to do well up to now.
I'm from the Netherlands and I agree with you when I listened the song the first time , I was also thinking there was something missing.

Instant no 1 on my top. Amazing vibe & lyrics I can relate to. I'm so grateful to Stien for this song 🖤
this song doesn’t need any more vocals, it’s a great song full of quality and emotions, listen it a couple times more :)

Super good entry, 12 points from me
this is my favourite song of this year
I agree with you that Brividi catch youre emotions , buth if you have listen this more , you are gonna find this good , i think this two songs are the best songs this year !!
I think it's really beautiful and that more instruments or voice would break the softness, unlike you I don't really like 'Brividi' but I really like this one even if they are both quality songs so in the end it's just a matter of taste
It's about twin flame, it's hard to get and feel when you didn't met yours, or are trying to put the mind over the soul!
Music is purity a lot of ESC entry’s are too much, this one isn’t
I definitely agree with you on that, Rachel. It's just that, as far as I'm concerned, when a 'good' song needs a hell of a staging to go somewhere near to becoming a 'great' song, it means it's just a 'good' song in the best of cases. Maybe my expectations on Stien were just too high...
Good pronouncing of her name 👍🏻
And this song is a grower!
You should read the lyrics. For me, this is a really fantastic song cause its small and in this time we remember our loved ones we miss.
one of the best and one of the most beautiful song on this esc 2022
to be honest I felt something similar to what you have said.
Ciao, are you coming to Turin this year? :)
Peace. I feel the beauty and power of this song much more than you do.
Maybe it is a grower, the best songs are growers.
Strange but after another one very tasty!!
It’s a grower, give it another spin..
Made your mascara run though 😉
This chord progression it's starting to get a "little bit too much" "fu#@ing annoying" (cit. Maneskin) :-) But the song is not bad at all
Can you please talk about Slovenia...
I will today :)
Por favor los dos últimos vídeos no tienen comentarios en español 🙏🏻
hi! I’ve put the Spanish subtitles now :)
@Serbio en Barcelona hi! So the subtitles are written in English, but there’s an option to ‘auto translate’ in RUclips studio to a long list of languages. Hope that helps :)
i hate dutch music, think it's terrible, but despite my dislike for dutch music i think this is a brilliant song, 10 out of (s)10😄
Ukraine is going to win, and rightly so, but I hopes for our country, 2nd place.
(secretly I hope first place but Ukraine needs all the moral support there is )
You're looking for stuff that doesn't need to be there. Music is about feeling, nothing more
That's not my cup of tea, The Netherlands can do better.
Brividi is going to win Eurovision
I hope not, it sounds dated, they could have compete with this song 10 yrs ago, it’s okay but not special.
@@mariannemens4015 come on man it's a beautiful Italian masterpiece
@@mariannemens4015 it is exactly the opposite of what you are saying, it has a contemporary sound. If it was dated it wouldn't have won Sanremo! Fact!
@@moonshine9836 (whispers) Pssst.. someone in this room is chauvinistically inclined... zegt het voort, zegt het voort... Brividi is wonderful!
Don’t think so. First I heard: oh wow! And now , its irritating, I’m sorry. And there is so much good italian music!
btw don’t you think Brividi sounds dated? It’could have been a esc song 10 years ago💕
This is not a good track…. No it’s a GREAT track. It’s absolutely brilliant but it needs a few listenings. I was totally hooked after te 2nd time I heard the song. Best song on ESC this year.
It isnt lacking anything lol. This is a song you have to feel and if you don't, you just don't.
This is very Bulgaria last year, good song but not strong enough. Brividi has got that something special!
Rachel now you are International you no longer have to tell us your name on every video you make.....sorry,🤣
If you don't understand the lyrics, and are not bothered to figure it out, you'll never understand the video. Nor the meaning. Pitty you.
It's not grabbing you? Maybe don't talk over it and listen..
When did I talk over it lol 😂 I always pause
Interesting to judge a song after 40 seconds. It’s like the Bo Diddley song... You can’t judge a book by its cover 🤔😳
How long do you take to judge a song then? 41 seconds?
@@ThePeaceAround maybe listen to the end of the song? Or stick with Hole and Tori Amos. Nothing wrong with that 😎🤘
@@MarcoHeijligers haha, okay man.
@@ThePeaceAround it’s your music. It’s your channel. I’m too shy to start my own one 🤗✌️
After 40 seconds you have a general idea of the style the song is following and can more or less say if it’s getting you or not. That might not be true with songs that reach their climax after more than 40 secs but it’s not this song’s case since it stays pretty much the same all the way through the 3 minutes.
Some people feel music, some people don’t..
That's Ok Dennis, don't be too harsh on yourself. Just keep practicing and one day it will click. Regards.
Whatever, kid. Grow up and come back when you are ready to keep a conversation among adults.
You don’t even know the translation ?
How can you not love this masterpiece, the feeling and sad vibe is amazing the whole song is taking me on a journey its so pure, so if u dont like this you dont understand music
Not loving a song doesn’t mean I don’t understand music. I have a music degree. I like the song but just didn’t love it.
@@ThePeaceAround a music degree doesnt mean u understand music
@@Mrfinnnn A music degree LITERALLY means you understand music in the academic sense. Waiting for your pubes to grow and exposing the fact that you're only able to understand music chauvinistically doesn't help your case my friend. Fijne avond nog ...
@@Mrfinnnn watch her last video please :|
Even with training, you can't take away biases and personal taste. To say she doesn't understand music because she doesn't feel the same way about it as you is short sighted. I don't agree with everything in the review but I get it's her OPINION.
She's not convincing you not to like the song.
