- The 2012 exhibition "Malaga Island, Fragmented Lives" marked the 100th anniversary of Maine state government’s eviction of impoverished, mixed-race residents from their homes on Phippsburg’s Malaga Island.
Connections with Malaga Island descendants provided great inspiration before, during, and after the museum’s exhibition. This video features descendant Laura Harrison speaking to a school group from Deer Isle-Stonington.

I've recently found out I my self am a Descendant of this Island, I cried when I saw one of the Darlings (my ancestors) was part of the exhumed and put in an unmarked grave.
I too am a descendant of the Darling family!
I'm Ben's 6th great grandson. If u look at the photos the darker skinned people look moorish. I'm starting to think Ben was moorish. Some have suggested that Malaga's name may derive from the wreck of Captain Darling's brig which was loaded with timber from Malaga, Spain.Alcazaba of Malaga is the most well preserved example of a Moorish citadel in Spain. It is next to another historical site: the Roman Theater.
During the dig, was the any evidence of European pre-colonial habitation?
Very sad
