    I laughed when Mulcahy told Burns the story of the sailor who:
    "...got mixed up with a young lady, who lived in a trailer with three Other ladies and a ......Man with a Whip."
    "(...broke his wristwatch, and everything...!)" Inspired Comedy, and Delivery.

    Trapper was awesome! I never understood why the show didn’t keep him as chief surgeon like he was in the book and movie. He was supposed to be Hawkeye’s equal, not sidekick. They did have some of the best chemistry on the show.
    I don’t really dislike Father Mulcahy, but I don’t really like him either. He’s just… there. As far as religious figure characters (especially Christian ones) go, he’s actually not bad. I just don’t think he needed to have anything more than a smaller recurring role.

      I prefer TV Trapper to movie Trapper. Something about Elliot Gould rubs me the wrong way.
      That being said I prefer either Trapper to BJ. If vomit could be animated it would come to life as Mike Farrell.
      I like Father Mulcahy, especially in the latter half of the series. I'm not sure what your problem is with "Christian religious figures" but clearly the last thing Mulcahy represents is religious sanctimony. He believes in the sacraments, whether the viewer does or not. In fact my least favorite moment in the entire series is where BJ, in HIS sanctimony, tries to prevent Mulcahy from giving a patient the last rights. BJ, who is trying to "keep a family from believing that their father died on Christmas day" goes as far as to try to stop a priest, the representative of Christianity in the camp, from one of the most important functions of his office. The patient is already braindead in this episode and cannot be saved. It is indeed time for the last rights.
      Why would an atheist/agnostic care one way or the other about Christmas Day?
      BJ sees only the nostalgia of Christmas, and not the sacred nature of the feast day.
      Yet, he believes he knows better than a priest and that HIS feelings about the situation are more valid.
      You don't have to be a Christian to see the hypocrisy of BJ there.

    Trapper is one of my most favorite characters. He had a lot of potential and I think the writers screwed him over in favor of Hawkeye. I wish he hadn’t left the show. I never cared for his replacement at all.
    I’m probably in the minority, but I think Mulcahy should have stayed as a smaller recurring character.

    • @Summer_Reigns
      @Summer_Reigns 2 года назад +6

      I agree with you on both counts. They should have done more to keep Wayne Rogers on the show. I never got the BJ appeal at all. I found him rather bland, annoying, and unfunny and not even really all that likable. Trapper had his flaws but he was far more interesting, entertaining, and even likable. I think Trapper had much better chemistry with Hawkeye too.
      As for Mulcahy… maybe it’s because I grew up in an irreligious freethinking household, but he just didn’t do much for me personally. I know religion has always been important for many people but I thought he was pretty useless for the most part. I do think he had some great moments though, but I also think so many of his lines and plots could have been left out for other characters.

    • @stormhawk3319
      @stormhawk3319 Год назад +1

      Agreed. Alan Alda wanted to hog all the traits of both Hawkeye AND Trapper leaving Wayne Rogers with a half baked character. No wonder he quit.

      Somewhere online, I found a list of when the show jumped the shark and why. I'm pretty sure Henry's death was number one, but this was at least ten pages long! And Henry died because Mr. Stevenson wasn't crazy about being part of an ensemble. This has never been said by anyone connected w/the show (and I've read/watched a lot about it, watched every epi. growing up), but I think that the writers figured, ok he doesn't like being part of ensemble, so why bring him back for guest shots, we'll just kill him off.
