  • Hi guys, I'm Eileen. Today's video is all about Hermes shopping. I personally really enjoy Hermes craftsmanship and leather pieces, but shopping at Hermes isn't without problems or issues. If you've been wanting an Hermes Kelly, Birkin, or Constance, you know the process is not exactly straightforward. In fact, it can be frustrating if you're only interested those popular Hermes bags, and nothing else from this luxury brand. I want to clarify that I've always received the most pleasant customer service at Hermes, and that my sale associate is the sweetest person ever. This video is only an attempt to look at Hermes shopping from a more third-person and neutral lens xx

The “brand exclusivity” and the need for a purchase history are precisely the things that make me vouch never to buy anything from Hermès, and all other “luxury” retailers that adopt the same approach

As always Eileen, thank you for your thoughtful wisdom. I have been buying luxury my whole life. My first luxury bag was a Gucci in high school. Never, ever has it crossed my mind to buy a Hermes bag. At one point they were unattainable and only available to celebrities and billionaires. Remember the years-long waiting list? Now every Melissa, Emily and Jessica on Instagram has one. Why would I want to spend ridiculous amounts of money to have what had become a pretty basic bag.

People need to remember that less than a century ago, Hermes was just a leather works business, albeit very well established and reputable. But somewhere along the way, the publicity they received on mainstream media through the Kelly and Birkin bags, and later on social media, has inflated their status out of proportion, because at the end of the day, they are still just a leather works company.
Also, good craftsmanship and the designs of the Kelly and Birkin bags are not exclusive to Hermes only. I've even come across Kelly bags self made by leather workers on RUclips. In short, Hermes is not the be all and end all.of the world lol.
Also, great video Eileen. Such introspective musings from a person who've been through it really helps everyone to probe deeper into why we always want more and better, and the pitfalls we get into.

Thank you, Eileen! That's true "Confession of a (ex) Luxury Shopper!" In my city, those who have made appointments at the stores still need to wait in line outside of the store. With the level of luxury they are selling, that doesn't look very "luxurious" to me, and is frankly poor customer service.

Thanks so much for sharing, Eileen. I guess it's a transition for some bag lovers. I, myself, moved from LV to Chanel to Hermes. Once an ultimate bag goal had been achieve, I started searching for my next one. And I realize that this won't make me happier. Now I just buy things that I love rather than buying certain things to maintain a purchase history for my next bag. No doubt, craftsmanship and history of Hermes are incredible.

Hi Eileen, thank you for your video. Honestly for me, I stopped lying to myself, the only reason I buy Hermes Bag is that it is Hermès. I've seen other Brands who have incredible craftsmanship and cost less. But I will still be biased and find myself excuses ( it's Hermès, the resale value is incredible, it's an investment etc...) fact is, they know that most of their customers buy this Brand because of the status symbol. It doesn't matter what we say, we are anyway biased. I just think the thing when too far and almost everyone has or can have a Hermes, the brand is getting less appealing for me and a lot of people, who now regard Hermes or Chanel as Zara or HM but a very expensive version, because you see it everywhere.

    • @ColourfulNoir

Hermes has become over saturated for me and is just the same with other luxury brands. I love great quality but I can get that with under radar brands like Valextra or Moynat. Also the game of buying a lot of stuff to get one bag you might not really want is over consumption. This is just my opinion… and I don’t think it’s bad if you love or buy Hermes… it’s just not for me. I feel you have gotten what you wanted and are happy with what you have!

You always have such a good perspective. I agree with you about buying a horseshoe bag just to buy one - I have seen videos that discuss the pressure from some SAs to get a crazy design so everyone will know it’s custom, and the secondary market is not necessarily as strong as the listing prices would indicate for those items.
The previous commenters on this video who have mentioned feeling too youthful in style for an Hermes bag have also hit on a great point - we all need to make sure we are purchasing the thing that’s right for our budget, lifestyle, and style, and not worry about FOMO or the sunk cost fallacy. If I only buy the things I genuinely like and can afford that fill a gap in my wardrobe, I will be a little safer from my own less-great shopping triggers/habits.

I started shopping at Hermes in 2020, right before the pandemic. In California at that time, you could walk into a store directly and browse. That's how I met my SA and bought a pair of shoes right away. I didn't do much luxury boutique shopping before then, preferring to buy from TheRealReal.
My SA during our "relationship" ordered shoes and accessories for me they did not have in store and obtained a limited edition HerBag Pegasus that was sold out everywhere.
What bugs me about the Hermes "purchase history" is that there is no communication between the US and Europe. So when I went to a boutique in Lisbon, they told me I have to start building a purchase history in Europe and my US purchases don't count there.
I wanted to get a Kelly before and bugged by SA about it, but now I have reconsidered. I genuinely love Hermes pieces but pursuing a bag is not worth my time. A friend of mine goes to auctions in Milan and managed to score authentic Kelly bags there for like 6,000 Euros. I'd rather go that route than a store if I need a Kelly really bad. For now I don't.

My desire for designer bags is slowly starting to fade away, now that I’ve discovered online boutiques and high street shops that sell designer inspired handbags in real leather. I rather get a bag that looks like a birkin for £200 without the label or the history, because if I’m honest, I only buy bags for what they look like, not who the designer is.

It helps to not have the space to collect beautiful things, as it would be easy to get addicted. Once you stop collecting though, it gets easier and easier to resist the temptation.. Also, put the money you save by not baying an extra bag into a savings account to reward yourself with the security you'll have in your old age! :)

    Hi Eileen,
Thank you for keeping us involved in the conversation.
I’m quite surprised you picked a Kelly Retourne (not a Kelly Sellier) as your first Hermes bag…not that it matters now you’ve got all 3!
My first luxury bag purchase was a Chanel…20 years on, it’s still one of my favourite brands…
I personally not fussed with Hermes handbags, & don’t like the idea of purchase history, so don’t feel like I’m missing out much…if anything, I’m saving money, having owned only few Hermes pieces and no intention of adding more…
After collecting my VCA 2 motifs Alhambra earrings, I’m so at peace & contented with my current collection…
Time to pause, enjoy & save (for an economic downturn or retirement 😜🙊🙈)

I have never shopped at Hermes before and I do not own any Hermes items. The bastia coin purse and a cup and saucer set are on my wishlist. I have heard their craftsmanship for leather goods is top notch. I do not have any Hermes bags on my wishlist. If I were in the market to buy a quota bag, I would not pay so much over retail on the preloved market. I would instead try to build purchase history in that hypothetical situation. I have considered purchasing the Bastia coin purse and saucer set preloved but they were also priced over retail so I decided I will one day purchase those items in store….perhaps when I am traveling in the future. You are so right about store visits being time consuming. Even though I have never shopped at Hermes, I have made shopping trips to other stores in the past and it does take a full day or at least half day. Great content.

I have been lucky. The first time I went into a Hermes store randomly, I was offered a lindy (non quota bag) after speaking to sa for 15 minutes. When she took the bag out, all women swamped all over and I just said I would buy it. I still love it and travel with it. The second time, my husband walked into Hermes in Vegas before a shoe. He wore most causal clothes and asked sa if they sold bags, the sa showed her a roullie and her husband videoed call me as I was in Sydney and got my second bag. I think it is combination of luck and location of store.

Hi Eileen, great video! A few years ago it started with LV. You would see their canvas bags everywhere and it gave them a cheap image no matter the quality or price. Then came Chanel and now it is Hermes. No matter the quality of the bags it does not justify the price. For me they lost the “air “ of exclusivity since you see the bags everywhere on IG and RUclips. Not a day goes by without an Hermes unboxing video or reel.

I think the idea of the Hermes “game” is fun, it doesn’t bother me. However, as my Hermes SA says, “it’s a marathon, not a race” so I do not feel like I need to build a purchase history quickly. I intend to shop at a normal, relaxed pace and enjoy the brand for the rest of my life. I personally would not buy pre-loved, as I absolutely love the in-store experience in and of itself. I felt nervous before my first Hermes visit, but was put at ease by my very kind and helpful SA.

I was actually contemplating to buy hermes or Chanel.. I came to know that buying both is hard..I don’t like to buy pre loved items, but still I started stalking fashionphile and RealReal kind of websites for a while. Then after seeing some good RUclips channel like yours, I stepped back and started thinking whether I really like them.. my wardrobe is mostly youthful and casual. Now that I think about it, I don’t even like the way hermes bags look like..sorry if I’m offending anyone.. but I think it is for mature people.. Probably Chanel mini will work for my wardrobe.. but I never ever seen it so far and I live a lifestyle where I don’t really need it and probably I would use 2/3 times a year. I have decided I’m not buying both. I bought LV alma BB, that matches my wardrobe and lifestyle. Thanks and Social media is scary as well as good..

I definitely understand what you are saying about Hermes; I will be 57 in one week, and I am not sure I am mature enough for one of their bags yet. I like casual clothes with a younger feel; jeans, sneakers, cute tops, etc. I DO love Chanel, and have classic flaps, minis, coco handles, and a Boy bag, as well as bags from YSL, Gucci, Prada and Valentino. But Hermes just seems too mature. I get tempted when I see so many glowing reviews on social media, but I haven’t been moved enough to start the effort of obtaining one. I have been in the boutique a few times for smaller purchases such as silver jewelry, but they were purchases I wanted, not a means to get offered a bag.
I don’t know, maybe in a few years I will want one. Just not yet. :)

I do have some jewelry as well. I wear my scarves a lot and love them. I have an Evelyn bag which I love and it’s my everyday bag. I love the cross body. I recently picked up a Garden party as well. Interesting I’ve been offered a Birkin and Kelly a few times as my SA knows how much I love the brand. I’m just not sure they are my style or that I would use them. Maybe a some point I will make that choice but for now I buy what I love and wear.

Yes i love Hermes quality, craftsmanship and heritage. There are so many quality issues with other luxury brands makes me even more so that if i can get my hands on Hermes, Kelly or Berkin i would love to have it. Hermes knows very well that their other department are not doing so well, so making the customers to purchase other items first before being offered make sense for them to keep their business for other department. I did thought of purchasing a pre loved but i hate the prices too especially for those hot colors and sizes. I wish Hermes can be my 1st luxury brand but like you had mentioned, LV and other brands i.e YSL are so much more available online and less intimidating for a start. Not just that, now with the pre spend, it has definitely put off a lot of new or 1st time luxury clients unless one has someone in their family that already had the spending history etc that one can leverage on. Now it is still hard or even harder to try on Berkin, Kelly or Constance in the store. After the pandemic or now still in the midst of it, even more so that all these are in shortage.

Eileen, here are my answers. I‘m from Germany and I started my Collection in the 80ties with Fendi bags and Mulberry and they are still in very good condition, in this time Aigner was also a luxury brand in Germany. Next was Louis Vuitton approx. end of the 90ies. Then Celine and Chloe. Actually I ordered a Birkin and bought an Evely 29 cm in March. Actually Louis Vuitton is more for accessories as scarfs and wallet. I totally agree to you re sales associate. At the Hermes branch here in Düsseldorf I have an elder lady, very friendly and customer focused. BUT while she presented me the sample bags as well as the leather samples a young collegue came over to our corner and took the bags away. Statement: I have an appointement and I need the bags. We were really shocked about her behavior. During the time I spent there I kept an eye on her and I can promise you if these young lady had been my sales associate I never had bought anything. Sorry for my English but it‘s a long time ago I used it.

I really appreciate your thoughtful videos. Watching them reminds me to be deliberate about what luxury items I am interested in and curate in advance what I purchase. I don’t buy LV and haven’t bought Chanel since Karl died. I only buy Hermes. For one, I think they handled Covid better than most and tried to protect their employees. I love they give a platform to artists to create some truly inspired pieces (unlike LV and Chanel which are in the business of selling their logos). I particularly like Edouard Baribaud and Elias Kafouros scarves. I have deep equestrian roots and love that heritage. I love they are a family owned business and they are also conscientious about sustainability and their impact on the environment.
To me needing to have a purchase history doesn’t make any difference if you truly appreciate the brand. As far as bags go, I think people get so hung up on how hard getting a quota bag is that they forget to consider the appropriateness of the bag with the outfits they will wear with it and the context of where and when they will use it. I have a Birkin Touch in exactly the color that works best for that type of bag with how I would style …that type of bag. Before I bought it I looked at pictures of Jamie Chua’s closet and asked myself - out of any of the Birkins and Kelly’s she owns what fits me best for that type of bag? I only wanted to purchase one since the reality is a Birkin or Kelly are out of place in many instances. Now I don’t have quota bags on my wishlist anymore since I already have the one that is suited to me for the occasions I would want a bag like that for. Continuing to purchase the same bag over and over to me seems like a one trick pony (pun intended) and having a more nuanced collection of bags is much more helpful. I’ll wear my Evelyne TPM or mini Halzan almost anywhere, and I chose the colors of those bags based on my wardrobe and how I knew I would use them and what color I like for that particular bag. I also know myself and small easy to access bags are what I will reach for 9 out of 10 times just for the ease of use.
Again, I appreciate your videos because beautiful things that are extremely well made can be very tempting, so being vigilant with yourself and only incorporating what will add luxury to your life and not just more stuff creating chaos is a very good thing to be reminded of. Thank you

I have every intention of buying a scarf soon, but I don't plan on playing any purchase history games going forward. I would love a box leather Kelly and if I can save the money up will happily look for a vintage one in the pre-loved market to avoid buying stuff I don't want just to be offered a bag. I'm far too picky in what I allow to come into my home and closet to just be picking stuff up every few months in the hopes of luring a sales associate to offer me a bag.

While I do buy Hermès, I don't do it for the quota bags. I started buying Hermès in January and love the silks and some of the shoes. I buy what I like and since I don't spend $10k a month, I'll probably never get offered a quota bag, but it's okay. I buy what I like. I'm actually considering Delvaux instead when it comes to handbags.

I never wanted an Hermes bag before and never was really in a position to afford one. I can now but never considered it until recently. The more I hear about this game you have to play, the more amused I am. It’s quite ridiculous but I’m kind of daring myself to see how far I can go without falling victim to the hype. There are many luxury brands I like so I am not in a hurry to get a Birkin or Kelly but I guess the thrill of the chase intrigues me more than anything else. I have promised myself however not to buy anything I don’t really want just to rack up a purchase history.

I have bought a scarf and a scarf ring from Hermes online in Australia and the service was excellent and I have no complaints at all. However I can’t see myself ever being offered a bag and that doesn’t bother me because apart from the Kelly and their scarves I don’t like their stuff. I will never be getting a purchase history because I have the very small number of things I wanted. If a vintage Kelly that has seen better days and needs restoration happens to come my way at a good price then I would grab it, but that’s the only scenario in which I could see myself buying an Hermes bag. For the most part I am not excited by their bags.

I love their craftsmanship and heritage as well as their shoes and housewares. What I do not like is their Madison Ave sales staff. Anywhere else I've shopped for Hermes, except that one time in Heathrow, the staff have been lovely as you would expect. Fortunately I have no interest in a B, K or C so history is moot to me but I am a giant sucker for the silks and card holders though and the belts >.< I have no qualms about preloved at all and if you see the exact thing you are looking for you'd be crazy not to give it a closer look. I actually think the first luxury shopping I ever did was le must de cartier but we're really rolling back the clock here.

I've never been a fan of Hermes. I prefer the Classic Flap, but ultimately I prefer to go pre-loved because of the price and the quality (vintage Chanel is love). "the game" is also not something that I would get into. ever since I learned about their process, it further pushed me away, rather than wanting to be in the game. I got turned off. If I do buy a Hermes handbag, for sure it will be preloved. From someone who is pleasant and not snooty. haha

I now look at Herme's stores as boutiques to buy anything but a Birkin or Kelly. I've spent so much and have never been offered a bag. I just got back from Paris and attempted to get an online appointment and every evening I'd get a message stating "due to high demand we cannot offer you an appointment," If I every want a Birkin or Kelly I will buy from a reseller. I like their blankets. pillows, lipsticks, and twillys but find their sneakers so uncomfortable along with several hats that were not ok. A newer store near me has SA's are beyond unhelpful and rude plus has high turnover of staff. First luxury brand was Chanel. I'm not supporting in their stores anymore because I don't care for the sales experience.
I was waiting for a "mushroom" leather they were supposed to introduce last year that doesn't support harm to animals and is eco friendly. That's really the only material I would now get a Birkin in as I also think it's bad karma in animal skin.

I was told by my first SA that I don't need to have the same SA each time and an SA can only have 1 booked in appointment per day.

What I don't understand the most is their so called loyal customers also have the same attitude as Hermes, very elitist. They say it is a pleasure to wait and hunt for the bags, well I don't have time to struggle just to get a bag. It's all in their minds, there's no limit in supply tbh, this marketing strategy is not a new thing. Years ago when I just graduated from uni, I worked as a sales representative for an insurance company, one of my senior staff did the exact same thing as Hermes, the product was good especially the education ones, it was a good investment for your children, but when the customer was going to buy them, he kept on pulling the string, as if they're not credible to pay the product. This was when people wanted to proof themselves, to get something that they thought they can't get. It's just the same dirty trick and I don't like it, it's very unethical to play with people's mind and self esteem just to get profit.
