With regard to hauling your tender across beaches. You can get small retractable wheels that attach to the transom which makes life much easier. Saves having to dismantle it as you had to do. Enjoy NZ.
We’ve seen those wheels before and might need to give them a try next time. Hauling the tender across beaches can definitely be a workout, and anything to make it easier is a win!

Why would they want you to throw away rice ! :). Thanks for those small but important details !. You guys definitively took a huge risk with a new sailor for a long passage glad that worked out for you guys !
They’re really cautious about what might hitch a ride in it. Grains tend to carry lots of little pests! Glad you liked those little details-we try to share the full experience! Bringing Hannah on was a bit of a gamble, but she was absolutely awesome out there!

Hey Chris! Thank you! Yes, we were bummed to throw some goodies away but we understand why and respect the biosecurity rules! Lots of good stuff to see and do in New Zealand. One could spend a year exploring and still not see it all! We do hope to get to Tasmania one day!
You should have been eating like crazy, that was good stuff to throw away. I'll remember about the labels but another boat had to throw away a lot of canned chicken so I don't think you'd keep it. Eat eat, you guys are so skinny anyway lol . Oh well, its gone now ! By lovely Hannah.
@@californiakayaker we tried our best, but didn’t realise that they would be so strict about the cans without labels and products containing pork, we know the cans were what they said it was written on them, but I guess protocol is protocol. There was also a lot we could keep which we thought maybe they would make us get rid of, like cheeses and some grains. So that was good. Thanks for following along! I was definitely sad to be leaving Brooke and Gary!
Let’s be real-there are risks everywhere. No reason to sail & travel if we aren't willing to take risks. If something happened to Gary, I’d get us to a safe harbor. It’s our boat, not just his.
@@SailingOneLife I lack no faith in either of you. --My goal was to highlight the sexist nature of the question. Brooke is equally capable, not supercargo. --PS: I do agree that the land presents more dangers than the sea.
They've done it before, can do it again. Each time gets easier. Eventually, someone will realized that short naps do not merit a keelhauling. During daylight, watches are hardly necessary. I recommend experimenting with 3-hour watches, which I once found less fatiguing than 4 during a very slow Saturday to Thursday 300-mile race.
The biosecurity rules are a bit intense at first! But honestly, once you're through it, New Zealand is so worth it. The beautiful landscapes and super friendly people make up for the extra rules.
It was a bummer but New Zealand takes their biosecurity seriously to protect their ecosystem. We knew this prior to arrival but it's hard to know exactly what you will eat when at sea for so long. We totally understand the rules, but it sucks saying goodbye to good snacks!
--If you ever feel a need for a "filler" on a video, perhaps you could explain how that Turk"s head landed on your wheel. --Inquiring minds want to know. The only other I've seen, I made.
Gracias por tu comentario! Entendemos que hay muchos lugares increíbles para explorar, y a veces es difícil elegir. Nueva Zelanda tiene su propia belleza única, pero hay tantos destinos hermosos en el mundo.
As a Canadian second cousins to Australia and NZ we know they are the toughest country to enter, you can’t immigrate there and work after 45, they don’t want their Healthcare and SS system overloaded by immigrants many Canadians make the jump to Aus-NZ just do it before 45.
Did you say "there's no season here"? New Zealand is one of the places with the worst weather you will find anywhere. You will soon find that out. It is also illegal to fly your drone without permission. Especially like over the ferry!!!! Expect not more than a couple days of sun and then wind and rain. That cycle will repeat. There's usually always wind. Lots of wind.
"There are no seas in here." Not there is no season here. Flying a sub 250 gram drone 300 feet over a ferry is about as dangerous as having canned chicken on a sailboat.
Wow, I would not through out all that food. Throwing out all the food goes against everything. And furthermore, having a problem with a flare gun.. It would be bye bye NZ and if all the visitors stood together the might lighten up.
They won't lighten up at all! NZ and all New Zealanders are fiercely protective of their native flora and fauna and know the risks that imported diseases have-- just take the Kauri die back disease that they believe came in on someone's unclean shoe. in the airport, you get an instant fine of $400 if you have a single apple in your bag that you don't declare... I've had it happen to friends of mine.
New Zealand’s super strict biosecurity rules are all about protecting their unique environment, and we knew we had to respect that. As for the flare gun, yeah, that was a bit of a surprise but safety regulations are key here. We figure it’s better to play by the rules and enjoy all the beauty New Zealand has to offer!
our main exports are food hence cannot afford the risk of foreign pest/ pathogens establishing in New Zealand, which may then dessimate an industry. This is a global problem in which New Zealand is proactive, i.e. prevention is better than cure. We have flares and rocket flares I am guessing gun flares are not permitted likely a hangover of our guns laws - safe travels.
I would like to give you my view on this - the whole reason of excessive bureaucracy upon entering in NZ is give more reason to bureaucrats to feel like they have a real purpose of their existence. Would you argue with that?
Yep, it’s all about protecting the environment from any potential risks, and prevention is definitely better than trying to fix a problem later. We are aware of the rules and respect them, even if it means parting with a few things. 💙⛵
@@siberianshuburshun688 You probably know very little about New Zealand, so why are you so sure you don't want to come here. If you change your mind, get in touch with me and I will show you how great NZ really is.
@@nevillesaunders1916 It was my first impression. After following this channel, it was the first time I saw so much bureaucracy upon arrival in the country. And it is always a red flag for me personally.
@@siberianshuburshun688 You should not judge by first impressions. However, we should not be using this awesome sailing channel for our personal discussions.
New Zealand does have strict biosecurity rules in place. While it is a hassle, we respect their rules and we appreciate their efforts in protecting the local ecosystem from invasive pests, etc.
@@SailingOneLife agreed. It is their right to ban flare guns on sea-going vessels fcol. Not that I was heading there anytime soon, but it is one place that I can erase from my list of places to go. ESPECIALLY since y'all went there for me and certainly documented it well. Can't wait to see it!

Why not just take enough food ? You can buy stuff in NZ seems a bit small minded to say bye NZ they are great people the Kiwis I cant understand the few dollars your worried about loosing versus the bio security risk to their country why they are so strict on what’s allowed in
@@KevinHollins-i6z It is the thought process that doesn’t make any sense…The idea that something canned goods would bring something bad into the country…The rice…The whole thinking like that is so wrong in my
opinion…No other country has such restrictions…Not even a flare gun…
Pretty sure NZ need short-sighted people like you either
@@KevinHollins-i6z Bio-security, for the most part has been abused to the point of protectionism. Planning to enter a foreign port with an empty larder is hazardous.
@@stevea9604 Flare gun is safety equipment. I do wonder if they are not all allowed on freighters.

Hey Chris! Thank you! Yes, we were bummed to throw some goodies away but we understand why and respect the biosecurity rules! Lots of good stuff to see and do in New Zealand. One could spend a year exploring and still not see it all! We do hope to get to Tasmania one day!
Yahhh welcome to nz best ship 🚢 mate Hannah
Thank you! Hannah was top notch!
It is so sad when you have to say goodbye.
One of the worst things about this lifestyle!
I was sad too😢
Hopefully Hannah will join us again somewhere!
So I'm curious Gary, does Miss Brooke still make the best sandwiches in the world? LOL!!
Any sandwich Gary doesn't have to make himself is the best sammy in the world LOL
@@SailingOneLife LOLOL!!!!!
Great video! Did you star in the Netflix series: "The Lincoln Lawyer - Season 2"?
Thank you! Ha nope sure didn't!
Where is the next destinations Guys ?
New Zealand, Fiji, Australia and then who knows! Indonesia?
Ain’t gonna lie, I was a sloppy mess of happy tears!
We will all miss Hannah!
Hi,you ain't seen nothing yet, have fun ,enjoy our country.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful country with us! We look forward to sharing the videos with everyone.
By Brooke , Cheers you 3 now 2 .
Cheers, George!
Sail back 8000 miles.
Did the dolphins have a New Zealand accent?
They have a wee bit of a Kiwi vibe 😅
Y so much want u buy theirs weirded to see Hanna go was a great crew member
Yes, we were bummed she had to leave! Hopefully she will be able to join us again somewhere!
Welcome to New Zealand .. have fun.
Thank you!! ⛵💙
LOL "infamous" meat pies? Do they kill a lot of people? Nah, just had to tease ya on that one.
Haha, you got me there! No, no deadly meat pies, just "infamous" for being so good that you can't stop at just one!
I wouldn’t risk a hike. If Cap was badly hurt, y’all would be out of luck. It would be quite a challenge sailing home with him
out of action.
Could be worse. He might have to sail with her out of action.
Did I say that right?
Let’s be real-there are risks everywhere. No reason to sail & travel if we aren't willing to take risks. If something happened to Gary, I’d get us to a safe harbor. It’s our boat, not just his.
@@SailingOneLife I lack no faith in either of you.

@captainjimolchs Thanks! We always appreciate you! My reply was supposed to be directed to @342rockinrandy3
Why water is so green, not blue, from above?
The water is greener here because of high levels of phytoplankton and algae in the coastal waters of New Zealand.
@@SailingOneLife Thank you, is water much cooler there than in Caribbean?
Yes! The coldest water we have experienced since leaving Florida! 🥶
Bloody awesome. Congratulations and welcome down under... (when you get Aussie)👍👍👍
Thanks, Matt! We are looking forward to sailing in Aussie!!
Without Hannah, you 2 have to go back to 2 watches instead 3. That means less sleep. And when that happens I know you're going to miss Hannah.
We will certainly miss having her onboard!
Green bananas are edible, yellow bananas. May they have turned more to sugar still edible if you are not diabetic.
4 minutes in and NZ sounds like a pain in the ass .
Mine feeling too.
The biosecurity rules are a bit intense at first! But honestly, once you're through it, New Zealand is so worth it. The beautiful landscapes and super friendly people make up for the extra rules.
That's crazy that they made you toss your salami and honey.. It's just food.
Hey Captain Jim! Unfortunately, we will probably never know! It was there when we purchased the boat.
As a Canadian second cousins to Australia and NZ we know they are the toughest country to enter, you can’t immigrate there and work after 45, they don’t want their Healthcare and SS system overloaded by immigrants many Canadians make the jump to Aus-NZ just do it before 45.
Interesting info!
😀😀👍👍👍❤❤
Thanks, Thomas! 💙
Honey illegal???
Did you say "there's no season here"? New Zealand is one of the places with the worst weather you will find anywhere. You will soon find that out. It is also illegal to fly your drone without permission. Especially like over the ferry!!!! Expect not more than a couple days of sun and then wind and rain. That cycle will repeat. There's usually always wind. Lots of wind.
"There are no seas in here." Not there is no season here. Flying a sub 250 gram drone 300 feet over a ferry is about as dangerous as having canned chicken on a sailboat.
👍🧿
Thank you! 💙
@@MichealForsyth-n6v Yeah right!
Economic protectionism. Canned goods? Gun laws indicate that people in Alaska and Vermont are more responsible than those in NZ, Au and Europe.
Throwing away perfectly good food gets under my skin. An animal had to die to make that summer sausage that was thrown out. 😧
We were bummed about losing some food and the aloe vera plant, but respect their rules in order to experience the country!
Most new Zealanders can't afford a marina you are lucky with the US dollar
We are certainly grateful! 💙
