    I have 6 of these and use them out on the bay to keep in touch with other boats. I have been able to reach 23 miles with these without problems. I use nagoya 771g's on them. we have accidentally dropped them in the water in one way or the other ( wading in to deep water, and just plain dropping them overboard and having to swim for them) I think the deepest we have dropped one is 5 feet or close to that and once we were able to fish it out it was still working and still works now ( 5 months later) without issue.

    Easy fix on the antenna opening. If you have a Dremel Tool kit you should have a sandpaper drum that fits on a shaft. Using the unmounted drum, push it gently into the antenna access hole while spinning between your fingers to remove plastic. The drum is slightly larger than the antenna opening and will bevel the opening wider as you increase depth. I used brief turns and tested the opening with a Nagoya antenna until it threaded on the radio without binding. Even the stock antenna was tight on my radio.

      I did the opposite, I sanded the outside base of my antenna instead of sanding the inside radio antenna base.

    I bought my UV-9G in January, and I have no problems. I replaced the stock antenna with a Smiley Super Stick and Smiley Slim Duck. I bought a GT-3WP because they both have the same form factor, and familiarity makes using both of them kinetic memory. They both fit the Specter radio pouch really well.Thanks for sharing. Wanted to say thank you for doing GMRS as well as ham, and I am going to hit the ham club here in town with putting a repeater up as well, there are sooooo many benefits to have both system operational. We do the bike race thing and are always short of people, so I think we could get some GMRS people involved with that too. Thanks again.

    The UV9G antenna with the orange Stripe is the same antenna that comes on the UV-5G Plus GMRS Upgraded radios also they use that antenna on alot of the new 2022 Plus baofeng Gmrs Radios 5:48 @KS6DAY

    Nice review, I just got a 2 UV-9G radio box set delivered today. I bought the UV-9G because it's CHIRP capable and locked in for GMRS without having to worry about accidently transmitting on ham frequencies. Being able to set up other frequencies like a scanner is a big plus. Can't wait to use this radio. WRZE723

    The seal for water resistance is probably that little orange square under the battery toward the top of the radio. Should prevent water from getting into the internal terminals on the radio itself.

    Have both the GT-3WP and UV-9G. bought the UV-9G first. Found out later the GT-3WP can be unlocked to transmit on GMRS. On amazon the -3WP is generally a lot cheaper than the UV-9G, and given it can be unlocked, is the better buy IMO.

  • @georgefaltot4900

    It's really rugged, but IMO reception is not great (even with a Nagoya antenna upgrade) when compared to my KG-UV9 Pro (with stock antenna) But it's the difference between SOC and a super heterodyne receiver. Sound quality is OK, but not as good as my Radioddity GM-30. My take is the the UV9G is a decent radio with good functionality for the money- your're right, it's a good radio as a handout.

    • @KS6DAY
      @KS6DAY  2 года назад +4

      Yeah, the next video going up is an output power and SWR test on the factory antenna. The upshot is that the factory antenna is not good. Definitely not "tuned for GMRS" as has been claimed.

      I have not forgotten your request to see the programming setup for the VX-6. I've got the screen capture tech all figured out. I have a nice headset/mic. So, I'm getting ready to start digging into that stuff. It will be part of the operators series on the VX-6 that I will be starting later this month.

I noticed on my db9g the FM does not work I contacted them and they said the chip does not support FM on this radio I don't know if yours works or if that's the case for all them. Also I just got done doing some videos on the Wouxun kg. 935g. I'll be watching to see your take on that one as well

    • @KS6DAY
      @KS6DAY  2 года назад +1

      That's odd. I had noticed that the UV-9G battery was a bit low before I did my power test video so I pulled the fully charged battery off of my UV-9R and put it on the UV-9G. I just double checked it again and all 3 interchange. Are you using a UV-9R, like the one in the video, or the UV-9R Plus or Pro? The cases are different on those and they might use a different battery.

    Something else that should be said here...this radio will only transmit on designated GMRS channels. It WILL NOT transmit in off frequencies between the GMRS channels even though they are still within the GMRS band. I have experimented with this and this radio will NOT do it.
