The Haar is close to the truth for the North East of Scotland, we had everyone’s favourite despotic, orange, faced disaster-magnet Trump trying to buy up land back in 2014, for his “golf resort” and getting in a tizzy about the Scottish government building wind farms within view of it. Coastal towns in the North East of Scotland are more likely to get bought up by private buyers looking to invest in property and turned into holiday Air BnBs. Public services like schools closed and merged into bigger towns and shops that close down because there aren’t any permanent residents. As much as I would like to blame all our ills on one billionaire, it’s a collection of many small cuts that gut a community in the North East. Also, screw fossil fuels… haven’t got space for that.
absolutely loved the other two, now going to the haar! "neurodiverse, self published, folk horror, elderly protagonist, hateful billionaire, grotesque?" you have such convincing words and great reviews! 🌷
The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires was my first Hendrix, read this last October. It hit me viscerally, and the thing that has stuck with me most is my intense hatred for the husbands, more so than even the vampire. I am not from the south, I live in Maine, but there are some portions of my state that people nickname the deep south in the far north. When I was younger especially, I saw men who treated their wives this way (and I am sure they still exist). The gaslighting, infantilization... oh, it hit me hard and made me so angry.
Yes! I am a woman from the South, and visceral is the word! I was so angered by the gaslighting in this novel that I had to put the book down and walk it off after some parts.
So happy to see you loved The Haar, I was sure you would! It's so widely beloved and adored among horror fans for a reason. David Sodergren is my favorite horror author writing today, but while The Haar is probably my favorite book by him, Dead Girl Blues is almost a tie, especially if you like 1970s giallo films and slashers like I do. Also, The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires is also my favorite Hendrix, and HtSaHH would be my #2 as well. It's great to see quality horror being discussed and analyzed, thanks so much Willow!
I just purchased vampires/exorcism after deliberation on the discord about buying second hand books privately! Been meaning to read sodegren for aaaages too. So much tbr...
Ahh thank you Willow! I’ve been looking for a new haunted house style novel so going to give the Christina Henry a go, also love the sound of the Grady Hendrix so will add that to my tbr!
I havent read the one about vampires but it reminds me of the book, The Pallbearers Club, where you read about the protagonists ineractjons and pen pal realtionship w an (energy?) vampire.
The Haar is on my summer TBR. Your description and synopsis of The House That Horror Built has me intrigued. I really enjoyed The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires. Great video!
The Haar is in the post and I can't wait for it to get here! I really want to read The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires too. That one is going on my tbr.
3 Terrifying Novels for Horror Fans to DEVOUR The Haar: A Horror Novel by David Sodergren (2022) The House That Horror Built by Christina Henry (2024) The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix (2020)
I really hated the misogyny and racism in the southern book club’s guide to slaying vampires It annoys me that the suburban moms were not incentivize to help another mom just because she was a person of color after her kid disappeared, and the husbands in this book are the worst Love the body horror though
But that was the point of the book: to highlight those things and weave them into the narrative. It leans into the tradition of the vampire as a metaphor for a frightening force and does something more topical and relevant with it
A billionaire who builds a golf course in Scotland, much to the chagrin of locals, and has no sense of morality what so ever? No way that isn’t at least partly inspired by a certain recently convicted criminal in America.

Funny you say that about Trump. I was getting those vibes as soon as Willow started describing that particular character.
"it's not difficult to hate billionaires... After all, none of them are technically people" 😄👍
