NED RIG AND TUBE FISHING TRICKS FOR WINTER BASS!

- Опубликовано: 17 окт 2024
- These tricks will help you catch more fish! Ned Rigs and Tubes are both great baits for cold water fishing. Winter bass respond to those small profiles worked extremely slowly, even in the toughest conditions. But not all baits are created equal and how you work them is as important as which bait you choose to throw.
Today Matt is giving some key tips on how he finesse fishes in cold water. He begins with some of his favorite ned baits and how he applies each to his fishing, then wraps it up with some tube fishing tips you don't want to miss. Matt loves to power fish but when conditions call for finesse he doesn't hesitate to pick up the light rods and get to work.
Below you'll find links to the exact baits, heads, and gear Matt discussed in the video. Everything is linked in the order it appeared and we've even included our favorite colors and sizes for each. Down below you'll find links to the rods and reels, along with some great budget-friendly alternatives.

Ned flat out gets it done son
Best fishing page on RUclips and it's not even close
Thank you Jake!
Love all the videos you guys do, but I have a question. How cold does it have to get before you start wearing shoes?
Dude dude dude.. thank you so much for mentioning the not so cold water segment. Being from Arizona that's my case. So thank you for hitting home on that.. I deel with this issue always. Watching you and several pros taking about winter fishing but our winter isn't like anyone else's winter.. so almost nothing applies. So I appreciate you touching on that.. thank you...
I've had very good luck putting a tube on a ned head, actually caught my pb spot with that technique and it was 5.4lbs
I caught my personal best smallmouth on the Z Man Craw ned rig. The savage gear salamander is officially on my shopping list. It looks juicy!! The claws on the TRD Crawz really seem to pull in the stubborn bass. That bulbus tail is probably just as good, if not better. I complete agree with you on O'shaughnessy hooks. The landing percentage is through the roof.
Thanks for the tips!!!
Caught my PB largemouth two weeks ago with a TRD. 60% of the time, it works every time.
That TRD crawZ is my go too Ned also. The claws and arms sit up in the defense position and it's reasonably durable.
I had to stop fishing it a few times last year from the perch and panfish not leaving it alone!
And I caught an 11 lb freshwater drum on one canal fishing casting a bridge piles lol. They fight like crazy haha
This year I'll be trying it on Erie footballs
Nutn like freezing bass ball out and snuggling up with a great informative fishing video.
Tubes work all year for me. They are my favorite Lure.
My favorite fitness tactic keep up the hard work
I love waking up to some Matt Allen bass tech
Those zman crawl kill it! Love them
Zman Ticklerz are fantastic and a favorite of mine. Good stuff as always, gents!
The big bite tube is the best I’ve found. Good price and they are loaded with salt. The colors are also really good. I’ve not tried the roboworm Ned but I feel like I hear about it all the time.
I have been waiting for this for so long! Thank you so much.
Favorite head, Matt Allen 1/8 works Everytime for me.angle of hook eye pulls better in super cold water, right after a brief ice out.
Matt thanks for this video.
tube jigs are a staple for lake trout fishing through the ice here in Colorado . i have started using ned rigs through the ice with good success . i ordered the 3in robo worm and i plan on putting it to the test
U should try the Sakura worm!
Definitely digging the Savage Gear Ned Lizard! Adding that to my arsenal this year ! Thanks as always for sharing your knowledge
I agree. And their lizard looks quite amazing
@@garyeplinglll the clear/chartreuse color I think is going to be a killer smallmouth bait!
Hi Matt. good stuff. Do you ever use rattles with your tubes? Floating inserts? How about the Trokar tube hook? We have fast rising dirty water at 50* in SoCal and it has been tough. But it looks like spring might be really good vs.drought! Thank you for the great info!
Dude I thought it was just me...The negative tide is SO low and theres trash EVERYWHERE. :(
The trokar tube hook is the bomb
Recently started rigging the ned heads with a weed guard in that little STH 2.5 inch tube as I've had a hard time finding a weedless tube presentation that will fit it. Excited to try throwing them closer to cover.
That tube combo 🤤
Matt, you are discussing two of my three go-to soft plastics for cold water. However, no one EVER gives love to my FAVORITE soft plastic in the cold water finesse trinity, THE SINGLE TAIL CURLY TAIL GRUB!!! I pick up a curly tail grub FIRST, before the Ned or tube, and usually I don't need to switch. My go-to grubs are Mister Twisters and Powerbait grubs. I fish in the land of walleye and trout, so grubs are the STANDARD plastic up here for any species. My ultra-finesse options are actually grubs first, THEN hair jigs before I even reach for my Ned Rig. Honestly, tubes are pushed to my 4th option. Smallies still POUND tubes, don't get me wrong.
When, if ever, do Tim and you use a curly tail grub??? IMO grubs could have been bait #3 in this video. Agree???
Odd little tanget., was brilliant.. larvae
I’d like you to try something with a tube. I take a longer straight shank hook, poke through the exact center of the tube head, pull my line through it, thread on a small egg sinker, then snell knot on that straight shank hook and push it all into the tube. Make sure the hook is where the bend just about meets the end of the tube body is what I do. Little more work, but it’s ridiculous because nearly every single bass I hook doing it this way is hooked in the corner of the mouth. I set it up this way because there were and still aren’t any tube jig heads available locally. This was before I started shopping online but I still do it this way because it flat works, and, when the fish head shakes the weight and tube go up the line away from the fish so there’s no weight for them to throw the hook with. I love this way of rigging though time consuming compared to tube jig heads.
Hey Matt and Tim thanks for another great video I know you guys did not mention them on this video but getting prepared to chase smallmouth here in northern Michigan when the ice leaves and was wondering what a good budget and mid price range would be for hair jigs as a Megabass is out of budget for me.
Thanks and look forward to hearing back.
Hi Matt, wondering what you think of Tennessee fishing, and how it compares to California fishing? I'm moving to Tennessee as well so I was just wondering if you like it better, same or worse?
Am I finally FIRST?!?!?🤯🤔 Happy New Year Matt and Tim!
Hey Matt, would you be able to go over clothing? You cover a lot of stuff, but I'd like to hear what you recommend for clothing, ie. what do you wear for sun gloves, for cold weather gloves, etc. to not lose sensitivity.
hey do you guys do any ice fishing? been looking for some tips and tricks and couldnt think of anybody better to give them out
im curious how many of the new expride rods Matt buys when they come out. Im going to say at least 5
Great video
Excellent! Appreciate it
Great vid, as always. What do you like for a weedless ned head?
I've been using the Megastrike Mega Tube. Good colors and they're fat. I also like the Big Bite.
Good info on the ned and the tube. Do you guys ever use a jig head with a weed guard on them? Most of the places I fish there is a homemade brush pile on just about every point, those open hooks will not work in those places. Have you guys tried the stupid tube hooks? Thanks again for the info.
Hey Matt. Great video here!! Personally, I’ve been struggling to catch fish off a tube, but there’s always a few Ned baits stocked in my tackle box. I like the candy baits Ned logs, the googan rattlin neds, 6th sense Ned frys, and the 10000 fish Sukoshi Bug. I think they all can work great and get the job done. But for tubes, I’ve been really trying to catch fish off them, but still am struggling. Hopefully your video that explains alll the tips/tricks and your personal understanding off these techniques will help me find them and catch one off a tube!! Thanks much! 👊🏼🎣
Good info thanks for the vid
Great info on great baits, Matt. I fish Chick and Nickajack. Could you spend some time on winter locations? Best baits in the world don't work if the fish aren't there.
Quick question did you use a go pro to record this video?and if so what go pro?
Great information as always but I didn’t see any BFS gear for those Ned’s or tubes. Any particular reason as to why?
I haven't found the right bfs rod for a tube yet. We're extremely particular about our tube rods.
Matt, this past year I have gotten into fishing soft and hard plastics. Every RUclipsr says the Ned works and I got the z-man craw and some TRDs and never caught anything on them. Any tips on fishing these styles? I’m fishing reservoirs and ponds in GA.
Are you guys going to be at the East TN Fishing Expo?
Hey Tim and Matt I know it’s not exactly related to this video. But Im not area of being able to get a megabass dark sleeper rod. I was wondering if you could give some rod options that would work well for $300 and under. 1/2 and 3/4 oz dark sleepers I have a reel just need a rod thanks and love what y’all do
Great video Matt. I was lookin at buying a rod dedicated to neds and finesse stuff. The two rods I'm looking at are the TFO tactical elite 7ft 1in medium light and the Shimano 7ft medium light Zodias. I know you've mentioned TFO before. What rod would you recommend.? I know both are great rods but is there one that could help me better with finesse fishing? Thanks
I can't seem to get away from weeds in the reservoir I like to fish in Howell, NJ. It makes winter fishing very frustrating because I know to slow down but if I slow down too much, I'm getting weeds every cast (even this far into winter)
Should I get a 13 fishing prototype x couse it is only $120 right now, or should I get a Shimano nasci?
Any reason why a weedless style ned head or a weedless finesse football head both with EWG hooks would not be a really good option? Just asking because my family makes them.
Does anyone fish a grub anymore? Still my #1 smallie and finesse LM producer by a mile. Forgotten bait, inexpensive too.
Do you go with small baits in cold muddy water or do you go bigger so they can see it better? Just largemouth no smallmouth where I am
Excellent info as usual. Thank you! Do you ever weedless ned head hooks? If so, any favorites?
Check out Do-It Molds. They make a "Midwest fineness jig" mold. You can make your own ned heads and modify the mold to hold EWG hooks for a weedless application.
Good luck!!!
It sucks living in ohio around this time of year. It's freezing 🥶
We have steelhead but I'm not a fan of the cold . Can't wait for spring already
I live one state away and I can definitely agree man!
For a bouyant bait like a zman TRD, what weight ned head do you use for different depths of water? For example, if I want to fish 20-30 feet of water what weight do you use for that?
What do you think of that G Loomis NRR?
So fishing this style, you are not going to be covering much water. Do you depend on your fishfinder to put you in the right neighborhood where you have a good chance of placing that slow moving bait in front of a big fish?
Hey I know Paul Howard we went fishing at the hiwassee river
Man I've had so many big fish bite tubes and come off cause they bent the hook out. I've kinda just stopped fishing them cause I can't seem to actually get many fish in the boat but maybe I have just been using the wrong stuff. I'll have to try some of this stuff cause I did catch a 6 or 7 lb smallie last year that bent the hook and came off right as my buddy was trying to net her and that was heartbreaking lol. So I know they'll get big bites. Anyway... great info as usual! God bless!
Set that drag light homie!!!!
Hi, I really appreciate your videos. I have one complaint though. You never seem to talk about the depth you are fishing. I really do like your insights!
Hi sorry that this isn't related to the video but what size hooks should i use to replace on the gantarel jr
Do you guys ever throw the classic zoom salamander?
Love it
Hey Matt, I'm a huge fan. I learn tons every time I watch. Like you and Tim, I use the winter to upgrade and replace terminal tackle, hooks, split rings, etc. I was wondering if you have a recommendation for replacing the blade on the Jackhammer chatterbaits. I've got a couple that I've bent after knocking them on hard structure.
I've never fished a tube before, did you guys ever have any success with them on the Delta?
Yes 👍🏼 Out there we flipped with them quite a bit. It goes through the Mats really well.
@@tacticalbassin I’ll have to give it a try.
You think a tube would be good in a febuary co angler tournament?
Yes 👍🏼
Question can you 🤔 use tubes for large mouth bass Matt. Every time someone mention tube fishing it's smallies never seen someone bring em out for largies. I want to tube fish
You better believe it! They were my go to panic bait on Clearlake when clients really needed a bite 👍🏼
Totally, weedless tubes worked great for me when I fished the Sacramento River. Largemouth like them a lot. They're typically a smallmouth bait because they're small and do good in deep rocky lakes.
Hey Matt, do you know if anyone makes a quality Ned head that doesn’t have a keeper on it? I prefer to use super glue and find that a keeper oftentimes causes my soft plastic to get twisted on the hook shank after a catch. Thanks!
Use needle nose pliers to pull off the keeper or pitch it flat
Never heard anyone say they dislike bait keepers, but each to their own lol. I can’t stand fishing any jighead without a beefy hook keeper.
Z man makes a ned lockz head or something like that thats only a thicker shank instead of a keeper
He actually showed the head im talking about in the vid
Have you looked into making your own neds? Check out Do-It molds "Midwest Finesse" mold.
I noticed that the 2.5" STH tubes were on special yesterday at TW so naturally I ordered a few packs but the bladerunner heads were out of stock. Is there a backup jig that you turn to that still has a good 1/0 hook and fits the tube well?
Northland tackle is the only other one I've found with a stout 1/0 hook.
@@tacticalbassin Awesome, thanks for that!
Ned rig and tube fishing tricks..... m'kay
Me and mine were catching em on a ned rig and 6 inch lizard on new years. They work when nothing will
STH tubes were on TW daily special yesterday
I hope you scooped some up!
My wife put me on a tackle buying hiatus. It was more like an intervention
What do you guys think about a tube used on a skirt less chatter bait head?
What dual mount are you using on the bow?
I like a green pumkin chartruse cut down yum dinger
? How can you bend a hook with a correctly set drag? And with 6lb. line?
I love and hate your videos. Love because there's always a new rig and presentations to try and hate because my wallet gets thin.
That's awful light ned heads in the description. Most fish around here are deep. Do you use ned rigs 30ft or more and how much weight do you use then? Personally, I haven't killed them with more than an eighth which is just too slow getting down there.
I wonder if your snowed in like me
Is there a big size difference from the Vanford 2000 to the 2500? Couldn't make up my mind, and I didn't want the handle on the 2000 to end up being too small, if there is a difference. Ended up going with the 2500. It's for my drop shot rod......either way I know I'm getting an amazing reel.
I think the only difference is that the spool is a little deeper on the 2500. I have a 2500 on a 7'ML zodias and the combo is absolutely killer. You're going to love that reel.
There isn't a significant difference except the 2000 is lighter weight overall. Depends what kind of rod you're trying to balance. 👍🏼
I had a fish Sunday that felt exactly like a sock or bag. And I know what hooking a sock and bag feels like 😂. Just dead weight.
Thanks Matt twin power 1/2 the price of stella$400.00 I don't think so can catch em just as well on my $120 reels 🤣🤣
Be a kid again and go to a clear creek and look for and catch crawdads then try to imitate the way the act in the water and when you were chasing them they do exactly what you discussed and the small double pump drag away retrieve is deadly
Top ten baits of 2021?
Why are the links gone? I really hope youtube didn't mess this up.
You made us nervous! Nope, they're still there 👍🏼 Click around a little on mobile and you'll get them opened up.
@@tacticalbassin Ill figure it out! My wife was about to be really happy and Ill remain frustrated until I get it sorted.
@@tacticalbassin it is working on my phone. But not the laptop, when I click "see more" it does not expand. I also tried it on two different browsers on my laptop.
@@tacticalbassin Crisis averted it works on the laptop again! Thanks Guys!
👍👍👍
Wintertime wearing sandels...?
Shocked you didn't talk about BFS gear in this video. Why not?
I haven't found the right BFS rod for a tube yet. Still on the hunt 👍🏼
@@tacticalbassin Thank you, just looking to replace my spinning gear with open face gear.
I am still recovering from a hog I caught yesterday and the knot failed at the bank. Watch your knots.
But flip flops are year round lol 😂👍
First!
You barely beat me out this morning!👍🏻 Happy New Year!
@@midwestfischerman Haha Happy New year! Early bird gets the worm.
my lake is 74° haha
"That whole rod will load up and let them fish go"
My wife is an avid fisherman -women - whatever these days..
I suggested she watch your video.
I don't think she gained a lot of fishing advice. She only commented on your rod, the way you wiggle your worm, and I believe something about your bulge.
Please cover yourself with a dead bass or something in future videos.
I myself , from your advice, might catch more fish than her next time.
