Here's the story of how life was like in the 13 British American colonies.

Once upon a time, there were 13 British colonies along the east coast of North America. Today we classify these colonies into three groups: 1) The New England Colonies 2)The Middle Colonies and 3) The Southern Colonies
All the colonies had a lot of self-government and most white men could vote, as long as they had property. All of the colonies were prosperous grew quickly.
In 1625, the population of the colonies, not including Native Americans, was around 2,000. By 1775, that number had swollen to 2 and a half million, and this group in 1775 didn’t have nearly as much in common with or as much loyalty to their European ancestors. Yep, these American colonies had developed a brand new, very distinct, society, and soon they would be leaving their European ancestors behind.
The New England colonies were generally more religious, and though its settlers came to America to practice their religion freely, they, ironically, did not tolerate any other religion other than their own. Massachusetts was made up of Puritans, but some Puritans didn’t think the Puritans in Massachusetts were devout enough, so they left and started the colonies of Connecticut and New Haven. Meanwhile, Puritans like Anne Hutchinson and Roger Williams, who thought the Puritans in Massachusetts were too restrictive, left (well, they were kicked out) to form the colony of Rhode Island. Rhode Island actually had the freedom of religion and a radical idea of separating church and state.
In New England towns along the coast, the colonists made their living fishing, whaling, and shipbuilding. Because farming was difficult, New England began to develop manufacturing with industries like shipbuilding to make money. Being furthest north, the New England colonies were the coldest, but because of this there was less disease than in the warmer colonies further south.
The Middle Colonies were the most diverse by far of the colonies. Different ethnic groups like the English, Swedes, Dutch, Germans, Scots-Irish and French lived closer together here than they ever did in Europe.
There were also many different religions, most Christian denominations, such as Quakers. With many religions came religious freedom, especially in Pennsylvania, the Quaker colony established by William Penn that had a constitution that protected many freedoms and would later influence the United States Constitution.
Economically, the middle colonies served as important shipping off point for valuable stuff to send back to Europe. Cities here, like New York and Philadelphia, grew quickly. Being in the middle (I know, such an original name, right?) put these colonies in the middle of everything, really. Ideas, society, culture, the economy, you name it. They also had much more fertile soil than the North. Farming The Southern Colonies, which also had very fertile soil, were all about the cash crops- mostly tobacco, but also rice, cotton, and indigo. Here, large plantations sprung up that required a large labor force. To fill this labor force, plantations often brought in both slaves and indentured servants to take care of the work. Slavery became an important part of the economy in the South. Being furthest south, the winters were more mild, but the hot and humid summers caused more diseases like malaria and yellow fever to spread easily. Life expectancy was lowest in the southern colonies.
There was also more religious tolerance in the southern colonies, even in Maryland, which was originally established for Roman Catholics.
Georgia was the southernmost colony and the last of the colonies established. James Oglethorpe had the idea to relocate thousands of prisoners from England who were there because they couldn’t pay back their debts to Georgia to start a new life, and King George II went along with it because the colony could be a buffer between Spanish Florida and the rich plantations of South Carolina. Plus, it was named after him.
Overall, the 13 colonies were extremely diverse, almost like 13 little countries. However, they all had a lot in common. They had similar political, constitutional, and legal systems, and most of them were WASPs. No, not those wasps. WASP- it stands for white Anglo-Saxon Protestants. Most colonial families were self reliant. Also, this might surprise you, all of colonies had legal slavery
was big. They produced lots of wheat and corn, and raised lots of livestock. Other industries here included the production of iron ore, lumber, textiles, furs and shipbuilding.

Don’t be one of those oversheltering parents depriving your children of real world experience. Sounds like you’re not even interested in teaching your kids but rather sitting them in front of a computer screen.
Awesome video, thank you for doing what you do. It's short but has a lot of information, and not in a way that's overwhelming!
Thanks a lot! I'm glad this video is still holding up. :D
Not to insult but I learned that there was only 12 colonies because at the time Delaware was part of Pennsylvania under control of William Penn
+FlyLikeAGFox True, they were under Pennsylvania control, but since 1701 they were a separate colony. You know your stuff!
Nice job! My teacher suggested your videos for us to watch! Keep it up 👍
Amazing video. Got everything I wanted for the exam preparation. Thank you #Mr. Beat.

Thank you I learned alot
Helps me learn
Pennsylvania Colony always interested me. I think it's becuase it was assigned to me in middle school for a project. 18th century hippies. ha.
One little criticism: The music was a bit distracting. Just like 25% softer might help. I can only give this criticism because I've been making the same mistake myself recently. Channels like ours need really chill music without a lot of action and or percussion. Think VSauce.
Yeah, I was wondering about that. The music is an instrumental of my song "Donald Trump Poops." You might get a kick out of that one: m.soundcloud.com/electricneedleroom/donald-trump-poops-kim-jong-un-poops-etc

In from the Maryland Pennsylvania border or the mason dixon line and it is beautiful and Maryland has such a great history
I'm sure Mr. Beat has learned a thing or two since your comment. I totally agree with you here and in general. Early RUclipsrs (he calls himself an "EduTuber" which I really like) seemed to think a soundtrack was required at all times. I was surprised that Mr. Beat says he actually wrote the "music". Most RUclipsrs get cheap/free license free loops that loop about every 3 seconds and to me are like Chinese water torture.
You should make a video about the failed Popham Colony in what I think was present-day Maine. Pretty interesting topic.
My history teacher uses this and I am using it to study
good job
Thank you :D
Good Stuff
Good for me brain
Thanks Sir Great Video Keep It Up...........
Thank you

Plz I need someone to write all that (the talk in the video) I can't hear that I have problems to understand by listen

It's interesting how the new England colonies were the most religious and the souther colonies were the least, now it's the complete opposite
Like how the republican party was popular in the north while the democrat party was popular in the south.
Sick vid
Also the british controlled nearly all the south eastern usa with west florida and east florida and a little bit a louisana but in acctual florida it was hard to settle because of its tropical climate and jungles eas florida was like the wild west of the 1760s
I feel Vermont gets short shrift in this Video. They were the 14th state. With Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain boys they fought in the Revolutionary War, but weren't ready to join in 1787.
The part nobody ever explains to me is why the next colonies up the coast, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia didn't also join the rebellion? They must have been pretty similar in population and climate to the New England colonies that did rebel, weren't they? Or was the British Royal Navy too strong a presence (Halifax being a primary harbor for His Majesty's man-o-wars) for them to rebel?
Remind me to attend all civilization and culture courses ㅠㅠ
I actually really liked this video. The guy seems like he really likes teaching and just want his students to learn. I really feel that he had fun making this video and has a real passion for teaching history. The music in the background really just brings the whole fun all together.
music was a bit too loud
Nice vid saved my but and also are you staying looking at comments
Thank you. Yes, I try to keep up on them.

I like it
Love you andy ♥️
There was 19 Original American Colonies weren't there?
No there was 13
In this video its Mr. Beat and I got A MrBeast Honey Ad XD
You really should mark both Virginia and West Virginia together if you talk about a time before the civil war!
It's extremely ironic that massachusetts was founded for religion and is the least religious state today.
13...does this have to do with 13 ghosts?
I'm always amazed that ALL of NY is considered 'middle' (mid-atlantic). I can possibly see the argument for manhattan & long island... but upstate? Seems like a more of a New England fit.
I haven't recently looked at a US map with latitude markings on it, but I would speculate that NY is in the most northern 20% of the US.
------------------------------------------
EDIT
------------------------------------------
I guess... if you go by the number of states on the east coast (14) NY is a middle state... quantity-wise.
Cardinally, however, it is not.... the top third of the Atlantic coast goes from (roughly) 38.3 to 44.8. NYC is 40.6

+Stephen Messina It's my pleasure! Thanks for sharing them :D
You should instruct your students on the facts of British Parliamentary Democracy and the destructive Marxist lies and terrorism of Franklin and Jefferson. They should change their form of government to a proper English form of governnent like Canada and Australia, fix the portraits on your currency and join the commonwealth. Embrace liberty and abandon french atheism.
Massachusetts was not made of Puritans. They were Separatists the actual Puritans stayed in England to "Purify" the Church.
And that's why the Mayflower contract exists
No tension between them ^^
never mind
Are you mr beast in a mask

Americans always teach that there were 13 colonies and count Delaware as separate to Pennsylvania. I think Delaware declared independence from both Britain and Pennsylvania at the same time. That would mean there were 12 colonies which became 13 states. The Delaware counties had a separate legislature but the same governor.
There was 13 colonies that just succeeded and rebelled against England. Florida, Nova Scotia, Québec, Newfoundland, and Bermuda were some of the other English colonies but they didn’t succeed against England.
And not everyone who lived in Puritan communities were Puritan. Some were Quaker and some were Catholic.
Wait till I find you
Ty for the knowledge I'm Jeremy Odin Scott Hammer Armstrong McGuire Senior God
Can someone summary the video ?
The population of the colonies went from 2,000 in 1625 to 2 and a half million by 1775. Is this by immigration from Britain or by people living there having babies?
Both. However, throughout most of the 1600s, it was mostly by immigration as it took awhile for the colonial population to naturally grow due to so many young children dying. The Puritans were a bit more successful at growing the population naturally than the other colonists.
Matthew Kent 90% of the colonies from 1690 - 1775 came from England. At the time the 13 colonies were consider an extension of england.
Yeah I can tell you what it was like. It was hell. They flogged you for infidelity if you tried to leave a wife you were betrothed to from childhood and stuck in a loveless marriage with and left for another woman. Especially a Quaker.
That's tough...

Life in the 15 Colonies Explained 😂😂😂
Technically there were 16 colonies, 13 rebelled, the other 3 remained loyal.
Florida, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland? Werent Bermuda and Québec colonies as well?
@@Ibelikemj At the time of the American war for independence, Britain had Florida, which was divided into two colonies- east Florida, administered out of St. Augustine, & west Florida, administered out of Pensacola. Then there was Nova Scotia, as you pointed out.🙂
