3:08 That’s Mark Kausler’s animation. Apparently he was fired off of that because he showed the Road Runner’s feet when he wasn’t allowed to...even though they gave him 6 feet of footage, so who’s fault is that really?
I can't prove it, but I'm almost positive, knowing Chuck, and looking at the time this cartoon was made, that he probably fired Kausler when he realized who he was. Production began in 1978 and just three years prior to that, Mark had worked on A Political Cartoon, which I talked about in '5 Non-WB Mel Blanc Looney Tunes Performances.' Mark animated all of Bugs Bunny's stuff in that movie, and the animation was done in the old 40s style which pissed off Bob McKimson and, more to the point, Chuck (McKimson being upset is less easy to understand, as Mark used HIS model sheets). Jones, as we know, was never into the idea of America remembering pre-1948 Bugs Bunny (from his falling out of involvement with Roger Rabbit), and I don't believe Chuck was in the practice of 'casting' his animators the way he'd used to. He was interested in getting three or four of his 'master animators' and then didn't care too much who else was involved. So I doubt that Kausler was personally hired by Jones. I can't confirm this, but I would not be the least bit surprised if it ever came out that the reason Chuck got rid of Mark is because he found out that Kausler was responsible for Bugs in 'A Political Cartoon.' The reason I say that is because, from what you say and the footage in question, it appears there would be ABSOLUTELY no way to animate the Road Runner slipping on ice and NOT show his feet. Fuck, I defy ANYone to animate someone slipping on something without showing their feet. The result would be Filmation. - trevor.
@@23567678 Keep in mind, we don't know if Chuck was ever unpleasant to him, and this is just my theory. My theories have certainly been wrong before. Like I was wrong about Buckaroo Bugs. Red Hot Ryder's nudity wasn't a repeated gag that got censored, but the pants falling and him getting picked up and thrown by Bugs was the same animation every time, except sometimes it was bloomers, sometimes it was a diaper, sometimes it was a fig leaf. So those three elements were on separate cels. I thought it was an indication of reshoots for a censored gag, but it wasn't.
@@TheLooneyTunesCritic Chuck Jones didn't fire Mark Kausler, it was Mary Roscoe. She was the chief of production for Chuck during the making of this short
We're actually going to do it again this year as a commentary with Matt Hunter. There's a really great visual joke at the end that we added last minute. I think next year he and I are going to be looking at A Tiny Toons Christmas. Basically, I'm trying to hold off reviewing Bah Humduck as long as possible, mainly because, beyond Humduck and Christmas Tales, there aren't any more LT/MM Christmas things to review. Gotta make it last! - trevor. PS: Also because I really don't like 'Humduck.'
In my previous response, 'Christmas things' is meant to mean 'Christmas specials.' There's plenty of Christmas cartoons, but I don't do reviews of individual cartoons (unless there's some unique angle to the cartoon that needs to be explored beyond a commentary).

Thanks for another awesome commentary, Trevor! Merry Christmas!
Where would you rank Chuck's other Road Runner cartoon from this time "Soup or Sonic?"
I didn't realize you've already done Bugs Bunny's Looney Christmas Tales. Speaking of which, this is the second act of that special.

This short predates the opening of Warner Bros. Animation In 1980.
I wish it was brighter.
Happy Holidays Trevor. Also, my left ear enjoys it.
What a lousy cartoon.
