- Todays video is pretty short and simple. I get a ton of comments asking about walleye rods and applications. In this video I talk about the 3 rods that I use the most for walleye fishing and what I use them for. If you are looking to expand on your walleye arsenal look for rods that have these same characteristics and you will be more successful on the water. Thanks for watching!

Very informational on the three rods. This will help me out. Perfect thanks Tom.
This is probably the best explanation of the difference in rods that I have heard. Excellent!!
Great Job Tom, my son and I are learning a lot from you, we are catching more fish all the time. Keep up the great work. Have a great day!
I'm convinced Mitch and toms girl are the ones giving him a thumbs down to keep his ego in check. Love your videos Tom. I watch them daily
@Kole Jared how much did it cost
TIMS GIRL IS A HATER
Great walkthrough Tom, would love to see your top 3 rods for bass applications as well! I'm sure it would be pretty similar with a few minor tweaks but I think people would watch it. :)
Spot on! Nice to have a rod for a specific presentation. Works alot better
Great video! Thanks for the tips! It’s not often I take notes on a youtube video, but you’ve offered some good insight into rod choice.
Excellent educational video.
An idea for Tom Talks - You look at screen shots of our graphs or lakemaster maps and tell us what you see and how to approach it.
Nice garage! I would love to see a video on how you organize your gear, store your boat, prepare for the next day on the water, etc.
Great information on rod selection will keep this in mind when buying next rods
Tom, Thank you very informative. GOing to Minnesota in a couple weeks and going to try and practice a lot of your techniques - maybe catch some fish. thanks again.
Great subject Tom. Guess we think alike!! Good job as always. Thanks again, very helpful.
Tom Love your videos , Im recently retired and have been going out with a guide for over 20 years . I usually fishing the summer with him and often use the same technique ( Live Lindy rigs ) . I was wondering if you could make a video explaining the movement of Walleyes . In other words , Where do the Walleye go at different time of the year and what do they feed on . I often feel Im one step behind as far as trying to find them . Thanks and keep up the good work .
Good video to "Save" ! Thanks again for sharing your knowledge
i like how tom isn’t jsut a usual youtube pumping up their sponsors like he actually gives us good shit
Great info on what actually matters, instead of pushing a single brand! Thank you for explaining some of the reasoning for selecting the power and actions you do for jigging vs live bait.
I know Im randomly asking but does someone know a way to log back into an instagram account??
I was dumb forgot my account password. I would appreciate any help you can give me!
@Koda Harlan instablaster :)
I think I'll go looking at rods today. Thanks for the info.
Great info! Need to make a shopping list. I would love to see a video on the rods you are using for trolling walleyes.
Me and my dad started to use st. Croix rod 7 foot medium fast action rods and there awesome
Good, I just bought a rod today for livebait jigging and I got a 7' ML fast action and now this video popped up in my feed. I did good for once.
Great info, love all your videos!
Great video!! I don't want to spend tons of money on rods and reels but this will help!!!!! I really enjoy your videos!!!!! I just subscribed too!
This video was very helpful. Thank you!
Joe Bucher did a video on comparing musky fishing rods to golfing. You can, but it is difficult to use one rod for all applications. When you are golfing, you have a bag of a number of clubs for different applications. This helps make sense to a lot of people.
As always great video man. You do a great job teaching techniques. Ever to get Washington st? The Columbia has some monsters.
Thanks, Tom! You are a master!
I love my Fenwick Elite Tech Walleye Medium Like Extra Fast rod. I even caught a pike with it, was awesome. However, I don’t troll with it, I use it for jigging and the like. For trolling I use a St-Croix Premier Medium Heavy Fast because I often use deep lures or bottom walkers. Tried Lead Core for trolling, but I dunno, it’s not for me. Anyway, great video !
Awesome videos Tom!
Awesome videos.. been looking at these Elliot rods ..hopping they can ship to Canada.. want to try them out ... all there is name brand stuff here.. just want to try something new ..
Great video! Could you cover your crankbait trolling rods in a similar video? Thanks!
Excellent Video! Please do a video on trolling rods.
Thanks for another great video! What are your thoughts on an 8' moderate action rod for slip bobbers / lindy rigs / etc? Would that be too soft / spongy for a good, consistent hook set? Sometimes when I take friends or family out, I end up using my ultra lite for slip bobbers and while that is fun, it is extremely difficult to get a good hook set. That pole has landed me a few 25" walters though.
Great content, thanks for help.
That was helpful. Would also like to see water temps . Thanks
Tom, great stuff. Got both of my brothers to watch your videos. We all love walleye fishing. Headed to Leech lake the mid September for the first time. Any tips for September on Leech?
Great information
Good stuff Tom
Very informative. Thank you. Can you share what size reel you have on each? Thank you ScottyD
Great video !!
Could you maybe put together a similar video on just your trolling rods and setups sometime? I hardly know shit about trolling or planer boards. Thanks!
Really enjoyed 😜👍
is there a major difference from fast and extra fast? looking at the St Croix 7'1" medium light / extra fast, for live bait jigging??
Come up to northern Saskatchewan canada. North Saskatchewan river has 19 species of fish to keep you busy for a few days.
Tom I been trying to get the Elliot 7’3mlf like you have they are never in stock I been waiting for like 4 to 5 months now so I was going to go with st croix but look at there warranty and on 15 years might as well spend the extra coin and get the loomis it comes with lifetime any suggestions on what gloomis to get
I bought a st croix victory medium extra fact 6'10 with the intent to use it for jigging for walleye. I have been using 1/8 oz jigs and I don't feel like I have the sensitivity I'm looking for. Should I try a heavier jig head or did I get the wrong rod?
Technique specific rods are definitely becoming more of the norm. As a rod builder that’s a lot of my work.
Hey brother! I like your videos. I am questioning how St. Croix was the must have but now the more expensive Elliott are the go to. I'm a weekend fisherman who has fished my entire life. I don't get to fish everyday like you do. So help me decide - St, Croix Avid Walleye vs. St. Croix Legend Tourny Walley vs. Elliott?
When you say pulling spinners by hand, are you talking about with bottom bouncers?
Keep up the awesome videos, yours are the most informational 👍
I believe that he was using an inline bullet weight for that application.
Looking for a MH with soft tip and strong backbone. I typically jig for walleye myself
thanks for sharing
Awesome videos
Tom, any plans on doing a "night fishing for walleye video? Thx in advance!
I do some walleye fishing in my boat but i do a lot of wade fishing for them in my local river and local creek that has walleye and musky. I throw rapala countdowns size 7 and 9 as well as shallow shad raps size 7. I prefer a 6'6 to 6'10" medium light fast action. I stopped using braid and spool straight 6lb P-Line Flurocarbon these days. I prefer the feel and dont dick with a leader
What rod would you recommend for walleye bank fishing
Do you Also use a piscfun carbon x2000 on the 76mlf rod?
Best rod for this price point, perfect inshore rod..7ft 1pc
Tom - what baitcasting rod do you recommend for line counter trolling walleye ?. I use a lot of bottom bouncers. I like good tip flex. Any thoughts ?.
Have you ever fished Castle Rock Lake or Petenwell?
What rod would you use for shiver minnows?
Can anyone recommend a good fish finder slash gps tracker?
How about a rod casting from shore into 20+ feet of water in the Detroit River for the spring and fall walleye run?
I have a 6' 2'" vertical walleye jigging rod....best damn pike rod i have...a number of 40" plus with shoulders.
You can’t beat a 7’6” rod for big water👍🏻🇺🇸
All these rods sold out brother! But hopefully they restock soon
For fishing with live bait are you taking the Elliot ES73ML-F over the St. Croix Mojo Bass MJS610MLXF? I know previously you were using the Mojo.
The third rod you spoke about 7.6 feet rod.How about a 7 foot rod would that work ok also?
7.0 ft must. Tom walleye guy!
Tom, If you run two Helix's on your boat does the one that you use just for Lake Maps need to be Mega SI or DI? Or can it just be a Gen3N? And do you share the same transducer for both units?
Only one needs to be SI/DI. And you only need one transducer as well. They are all
linked typically and therefore will all work together on the single ducer.
What crappie rods are u useing
Do you use a mono backer on your power jig rod’s carbon x 2000 reel or 10-15 # braid all the way to bottom of reel? If so, how much backer vs braid do you recommend?
For braid I always use a mono backer so that the braid doesn’t slip on the spool. I just use enough to cover the spool two times.
Hey Tom, Like how you cover the basics and let the viewer have the opportunity to cover their individual price range. Personally I own top of the line st. croix stuff. But the way you do it applies to alot of people. We need to get the young people involved, and we don't need dollar figures, keeping fishing from them. I am 57 years old and have been a sportsman all my life, quite successfully I might add, but as I have figured out you get to be good to a point where the challenge and reward is not quite there like it used to be. But, spending time with younger sportsman teaching and mentoring brings alot of the desire we had in our earlier careers right back. Your a young guy yet, but trust me you will understand later in life. This will help you not drift away from the sport.
What happened to the mojo bass rods you always recommend?
Paid advertising
When you and Shelby have your grand kids in the boat you will understand!!!!!
opinions on gloomis rods?
Thanks, great info Tom. Those Elliott rods look nice, too bad the models you mention are out of stock. Any other recommendations?
St croix
Anything that fits what I described.
Fenwick hmg. For the money they’re hard to beat
@@bigz5262 I got one of those, and I like it so far. Paired with a Plueger President. I set it up for jigging walleyes. Lakes over here in IN are more difficult, and must not have the Walleye #s of Wisconsin Lakes.
Dobyns rods are great
One or two piece rod?
Hey tom, I wanna go walleye fishing but I don’t own or know anyone who owns a boat, and I was looking for tips for trying to fish from shore
I second this comment. Most of my fishing is from shore as well. I do alright, but I'd love to know what I could do different
Some state park agencies have contour maps of a lot the lakes... Look them over to find points, drop off, humps, etc that you can fish from shore and target those areas instead of wherever seems easiest to fish.
Also try bridges. There is current and usually some kind of deeper hole at the bridge. They are also generally publically accessable
Im poor 325 a rod yikes. Nice videos
Have you ever fished mosquito creek lake in Cortland ohio
Tom given your in Wisconsin what makes you choose Elliott's rods over St. Croix rods?
he use to use st. Croix must have got sponsored by Elliot rods.
My guess is because they are slightly lighter and better balanced. I like both and let's be honest, whether it's made here in WI or in Walleye Central northern MN, we can all agree: at least they aren't from Illinois.
@@HuntsWorkshop Yeah, if you could just unattach Chicago, and all the mob crook networks, then you would have a good state. A lot of good fishing and hunting opportunity there.
What sucks about Elliot rods is they are never in stock I gave up on them
@@travisnunya4641 I'm sure covid has lots to do with it. St Croix selection is not good right now.
I use 6’6” ugly stick medium actions. Best rod I’ve ever owned. And cheap too. 7 year warranty is also something you can beat
For light weight and sensitivity, nothing beats an Ugly Stick
damian maasjo I have slowly converted most of my rods to Ugly Stiks. I’m currently trying to find 4 6’-6” medium 2-piece Ugly Stiks for when I take them fishing.
brilintube most Walmart’s have the g2 combos for like $50.
Been using 6'6 South Bend Intruder Medium action for years...love it but curious about taking a few notches up on quality n feel
@@Zafterliscious St Croix Premier is a damn nice rod, good sensitivity and lightweight. They're in the 130 dollar price range. The minute you get bit with a little nicer rod you'll fully understand! I used to run Berkley Cherrywood's and slowly started upgrading and it is night and day difference.
Hi can you suggest a rod in the $100 price range for walleye fishing this coming spring in Minnesota??? Or anyone ?? Thank you
I quite like the Cabela's/bass pro walleye prodigy rod
Thank you very much sir
What are the benefits to a one piece rod
1 piece rods are more sensitive
Do you guide for walleye
No
What Lake do you fish? Love walleye fishing and trying to take in all your knowledge!
I'll tell you what lake if you give it up... otherwise don't ask don't tell
@@Skank_Hunt42 I wasn’t asking for your exact location Gezzzzz just the lake. As if I’m gonna come and catch all your fish! And give what up....
@@christamclane2334 give up dat azz and I'll tell you what lake...
@@Skank_Hunt42 don’t ya have a girl for that. Have some respect!
@@christamclane2334 I have 6 girls for that. I can always use a new one... let me know...
Your last walleye video was all st croix rods..... now it’s elliots ?
Coffee Break Tom Tech Time! I read braid can slice a groove into the eyelets on some St. Croix Rods. Do Elliot Rods have this issue?
I've caught thousands of walleye on my st. Croix rods, using braid, and gave never had a groove cut into the eyelets.
Good to know because I love my St. Croix PS66MLF for walleyes. Spooled my Tatula LT 2500-HX with 10lb Suffix Advance. With Tom Tips I have had a great year so far jigging, thanks to the Walleye Master of the Universe
What layout and kind of boat do you have?
Try searching his channelruclips.net/video/HF2v450FfMM/видео.html
Your rods look way longer in your vids, I thought you were running 8+ footers. I prefer around 7 /7+ footers myself.
M-MUUUUUST.... C-C-CONSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOME
Tom please slap "hooked upp!" On a shirt!
Nice video but is Elliott still in business. They never seem to have stock in, can't get hold of them and even their retailers don't list them. Too bad they look like good rods.
They are a small company that makes the best rods on the planet....get on the wait list and have it by spring
Literally catch everything on one rod. Walleye, bass, pike and musky, crappie, sunfish etc.... just one rod medium action
Lol he said “tip play”
That's what your boyfriend said
@@Skank_Hunt42 Gottem!!
You talk so fast that’s ok except I have no idea name of reel you use. My hearing isn’t the best but after : tries couldn’t get name you said if so fast
These prices are way too high for most people
Exactly why I said look for a rod that has these attributes at a price point that works for u
Tom Boley are ugly sticks or fenwick rods close to what you might recommend
Calvin Monroe my uncle catches walleyes on ugly stix. I can’t stand them myself. Fenwick makes good rods. Daiwa RG are awesome rods for like $70
@@calvinmonroe2408 Fenwick probably has some offereings that may fit his description, probably not on the Ugly sticks, which are usually less balanced. I bet ugly sticks would work for trolling though, if you cant get the right length and action they may do well for that. Cabelas Whuppn Sticks maybe too for trolling. You may also look at Okuma brand rods. They are reasonable priced, and seem to do well. Ive got a few myself. Their trolling rods are way too beefy though, I dont recommend those. You should look at their Kokanee Rod, and their dead eye series. Their are a few others that might be good of theirs too. Check them out on FISHUSA.com.
@@shootermcgavin991 Ugly sticks are tough, but bulky and unbalanced for most applications. With the right action if they offer it, I'd use them for trolling, but that is probably it.
You worm get some rest
