Vlad the guru it’s not a matter of taking over but displaying or glorying past atrocities. I’m not talking about Native Americans only. The global aspect comes into play because there are places where these conversations are taking place. It doesn’t have to be a statue but could be a street, government building or region. Personally, I think these statues should at a minimum be placed in a museum and in its place erect a more representative symbol. If it can’t move or impractical, then make it known - obvious - that it’s a reminder of what was and the society is better since the statue was erected.
Vlad the guru ideally yes but people will go to great lengths to make or instill a point and a compromise will be necessary. Unrelated note, this is the problem with modern politics as it’s too extreme and will act like a pendulum. Be a moderate - you may not be ecstatic but will grumbly accept any outcome.
Vlad the guru South Africa has never been a black only country, blacks are from Central Africa and are NOT the natives of SA.. the only true indigenous people are the Khoisan ( not black btw) then whites arrived living in South Africa for 150 years before any blacks.. so you see no land belongs to the Bantu.. they are invaders not settlers. Where those flags were proudly hoisted over the bodies of dead people in triumph, ours was hoisted over the heads and shoulders of former enemies, who lifted this flag in peaceful glee, telling us that we will overcome all of this, and move forward together.

We have much respect for whites... But they respect us too, We don't have real racists problems here, We are one nation... White, black and all others in Namibia call each other brothers and sisters...
Of course there are different skin colours, different tribes, different nationalities, different cultures, and whatever else. But, ultimately there is only one race, the human race.
Someone mentioned this:
[These are] indeed part and parcel of South Africa's history....
When traveling throughout Europe, Great Britain, Scandinavia in fact anywhere in the world, each country has monuments and historical heritage sites many of which are protected by UNESCO..
However, a great tragedy currently in South Africa is that monuments, statues and heritage sites are being systematically destroyed, desecrated and vandalized by those who generally are grossly lacking in education, national pride and self respect....but most concerning of all is their total lack of basic civility... as a young student once commented after the unnecessary destruction of a national heritage site....we are modernized but not yet civilized.....
Decolonising is also bad for tourism.
Ah well
And, tourism is what South Africa very much needs now.

@@mazibukoalbert6865 And, talking about monuments, there is that stupid stereotype that all whites are, and were, in favour of colonialism, and such like. That is simply not true. And, those are just the famous ones who have passed on.

What about the extermination of the Boer women and children by the British in the concentration camps during the Anglo-Boer war of 1899-1902. The British allowed the black savages to rape the women and children.

Just like apartheid has no place in a sane society, Xenophobia also should be banished from South Africa.
I don´t think that those are monuments to Apartheid. I don´t see in SA a single monument which goal is to tell to the World "Look how badly we treat to the blacks". None of that exist in South Africa at all. What we see in South Africa are not monuments to Apartheid as an end in itself but rather monument of remembering of the history and culture of a particular community of South Africa which is the Afrikaner community. Those are the renmnats in stone, concrete and wood of their shared and collective past as a people. Should be kept and even protected by the State as well as with the monuments and structures that conmemorate and rememorate the different ethnic comunities that conform such complex country as South Africa is. The same to the Boers as for the Zulus or the Xhosa. Keep them standing.

What do we do with the ANC?

There is and never was monuments to apartheid in south africa. Clickbait
We should mind our own business and let south Africa figure that out.
false. anyone can have an opinion on anything
...and what about the US? This discussion is taking place because these are global conversations.
If you want to spill verbal diarrhoea about a country you obviously know nothing about, do proper research.. btw South Africa is a country in the African continent, which is a multicultural society, nobody owes blacks anything.
"Monuments to apartheid"? Huuh? Sounds unintelligible.

Hey doos.
If you haven't noticed, the South African flag has _"die vierkleur"_ already in it.
Our nation's flag is a symbol of peace. It is the one of the only flags in this world that was borne of peace, every other flag in the world represents conquest, oppression, death.
Where those flags were proudly hoisted over the bodies of dead people in triumph, ours was hoisted over the heads and shoulders of former enemies, who lifted this flag in peaceful glee, telling us that we will overcome all of this, and move forward together.

Keep it as a memory of another nation that today no longer exist. The new South Africa is more and more similar to countries like... Congo, Zimbabue, Uganda, etc...
@Sam Advocan It depends on how you define beauty? If white supremacy and repression of other racial groups is your ideal version of beauty Then let me clarify that you have got it wrong.
South Africa's past was tangled in nationalistic views, racial identities and segregation while south Africa's future is grappled with corruption, African nationalistic views, plundering and high crime stats. None of these situation can ever be defined as being beautiful.
