  • We are continuing work on the DIY piers for the utility building. We find some really hard rock as we try to drill holes to epoxy rebar into bedrock. We epoxy piers 2 and 3 and make a form for footing for pier 2.

You need to have a respirator while you are drilling and blowing the stone dust. Growing up in Barre around the granite industry knew many older workers that had black lounge disease from granite dust. Vermont granite dust is deadly. Saw a news item last week about workers in LA that are working in the counter top industry that are getting this disease because the companies are not regulated. Enjoying your build and seeing your willingness to problem solve any problem.

Definitely SDS time given how much more work you have ahead of you! :) I really admire your attention to detail, but you're both so patient too

I was helping a friend drive some ground rods in a couple of weeks ago and was wishing I had an SDS drill to help with that. If only I had bought one at the time....

You have the opposite foundation issues that I have down here on the Gulf coast: mine's expansive black clay, for >6 feet. Had work done, adding piers to my garage last spring: it was sinking on one side and slowly tipping over. They dug 8-10' foot holes with elephant foot at the bottom, added rebar, and poured, then shimmed it tight against the underside of the slab, in a dozen points around the garage - old school foundation repair. This summer has been a huge drought: the ground has cracked and pulled away from the garage slab: inches wide and feet deep, but the building hasn't moved. Makes me happy I found a contractor almost as meticulous as you two!

Wow! Sounds like they did a great job! Fingers crossed ours holds up as well as yours.

SDS can be handy for you in the future because it will also work as a very small jackhammer that you may find easier to use than a hand pick like you were in the video. I used it to demo a brick hearth and it was perfect. But you guys are a very very long way from reno work. 🙂

I do enjoy watching your videos, but I feel compelled to ask, three years into the project, have you speculated on when you will have a livable dwelling?

Probably in about 4 years or so. We’re not in a rush!

Watching you scraping away with a trowel in that hole I was sitting here wondering, Mastodon or T-Rex? 🤔

I'm gonna guess that Matt is a Scorpio and Diana is an Aries.
