- Another British homegrown talent: the late and most certainly great Amy Winehouse. In fact it was the subject of my previous post (Julia Fordham) who via recommendation introduced me to Ms Winehouse long before 'Rehab' was a worldwide smash. Back in 2004, 'Frank', the debut opus from Amy was given exemplary endorsement by Julia on her website as some great music and an extraordinary new talent to embrace - and she was, and I did! I went out and bought 'Frank' which was the most wonderful morphing of genres - jazz/pop/urban and blues - all underpinned by the unique tones of Amy Winehouse.
Tragically, her fall from grace and untimely death at just 27, has given her short career its notoriety, but her recordings need to be remembered and adored as she was one right out of the box and she inspired countless other female artists that decade and in the two decades that have followed. Recording mostly originals, Amy covered the Gerry Goffin/Carole King classic 'Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow' and produced by Mark Ronson for her in 2011 and eventually found on her posthumously released set 'Lioness; Hidden Treasures' which came some 5 months after her death. This long player featured some covers and demos and was a huge success; given the enormous tragedy of her passing that same year.
It is extraordinary to me that Carole King has written some of the finest songs ever, and at 80 years young in 2022, has been writing for more than 60 years! 'Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow' was penned in 1960 and was a huge hit for The Shirelles who became the first all black girl group to have a #1 hit. Amy's version, due in part to when it saw the light of day, is so powerful and she brings such vocal power and texture to a song that is among the most covered ever; making it truly her own.
