I love Tamera’s hair, but I hate when people say that mixed curly hair is the only “good hair” when it comes to curly hair... HEALTHY hair is good hair. 4C hair is just as good and beautiful as any other hair type.

I've been wearing my hair natural after years of straightening it and cut it short because it was severely damaged. I prefer it short but my family want me to grow it back out and start straightening again. It's so irritating because these people are supposed to love and encourage me but spend most of our encounters talking about what's wrong with my appearance. I hurt myself so much trying to fit into the molds they created. After realizing that no one in my family embraces their natural features, I started to ignoring them. None of them have the right to judge because they're all fake. Now that I've been embracing my true self, I actually feel confident. I'm slowly learning how to love myself and its wonderful. I encourage women to embrace themselves for who they are. All hair is beautiful and deserves validation.

    • @broookehunter
      @broookehunter 5 лет назад +1

It's easy to feel pretty when it's fake. Think about it, if something about us isn't our true selves, and people (and us) like it about us, it's not true! Because it's not us that they (we) like. I agree with you, it's so much more rewarding when we like and love ourselves for who we really are. Let's all look the way we're supposed to!

I also had a black dude at my job asked if my hair was mine just two days ago. I think they showed black women with kinky hair, like Lupita and Teyonah Parris; not biracial women with curly hair, like Tamera and Tracee Ellis Ross. Like Remy pointed out at 11:48, there is a difference between the hair types (I don't even consider curly hair "natural hair", because women with curly hair never had their hair chemically altered and made unnatural, so they never "go natural"; they just have not-flat ironed hair).

I had a friend with bone straight hair. My hair is super curly and she would pull it down and would make a sound affect that Tamera was talking about. so I would flip her hair and say swish! I grew up not liking my hair, everyone prefers straight and I remember when I got mine straightened at the salon I felt like a million bucks. But I had learned to love my curls and embrace them. I didnt know how to take care of it so I had to learn after a big chop. It looks better then ever. I really hate the term "good hair" everyone's has beautiful hair and I think the kinkyer/tighter the curls you have the more beautiful. The key is just to keep your hair moisturized (and I dont mean with just water) there are so many hair products for natural hair that strengthen your strands and really help define your natural curl patterns and the right mostuires promote hair growth. I wish people would stop fixating on our differences in a negative way! It sucks that curly isn't considered professional. Its pretty sickening to me! No one should have to feel like they have to change who they naturally are to go somewhere in life!

I can definitely relate to Tamera. My hair is naturally curly and I have thick curls and my hair is big so I was very insecure on how voluminous my hair would get when it was dry as a kid. I use to drench my hair in gel and mousse to keep it down so I always had "crunchy" curls. No one thought that was really cute and my grandmother use to say I had "pelo malo" which means bad hair. She also has curls and would always straighten it and my mom has curls. My dad on the other hand, his side of the family, they have thick black straight hair and it's beautiful but they didn't find their own hair special and my dad use to say my hair was beautiful and so did his side of the family. My dad is Nicaraguan and my mom is Dominican. I use to straighten my hair all the time too and people always told me they liked my hair better straight so I kept it that way for a long time and ended up damaging it. One day I just did a big chop to regrow my hair and get my curls back because I missed them so much and ever since then I embrace my big curls and I rarely ever straighten it anymore. The last time was like last year or something. I love my hair and now I get compliments on how my hair is so beautiful all the time. ❤️ I would want my kids to learn to love their natural hair also whether it's straight or curly or wavy. It all deserves love.

I have naturally curly hair. I remember this one time I felt so offended by my children’s daycare director. She was a young white woman. I was pregnant with my third child so I wore my hair curly for most of the time when I first met the woman. So one day I came in with my hair straight. She had the audacity to tell me she preferred my hair straight. I mean she complimented me at first on how pretty and long my hair was but that last statement should’ve been kept to herself. After I left I really thought about what she said. It really hurt my feelings. So after that I wore my hair curly up until I moved. I mean why couldn’t my hair have been preferred either way?! A Hispanic woman told me she didn’t know which she preferred on me because straight or curly, my hair was beautiful either way. Like Tam said, if I wear it straight it’s because I want too!!

Curly hair is hard to manage that is why a lot of people straighten it. And curly hair has fewer haircut choices compared to straight hair. And I dont know why Adrien is saying only white people have straight hair there are a lot of Latinos with straight hair. And putting your hands in peoples hair when you dont know them like that is inappropriate and rude. Black hair is probably the most difficult hair type thats why its better for it to be short or straightned.

Mia I We can be proud black women and still prefer something different for a little while, especially if it’s just to have a protective hairstyle for awhile. we may where straight weaves and all that but we are still proud of our culture and proud of our ancestors and proud of the color of our skin. we just want to protect our hair for a little while and try something different. there’s nothing wrong with trying some new things, and that counts for hair too.

@@kasperann3264 I agree! But then would you say it's okay for non black women to wear braids or cornrows for example? They're still trying some new things for them

Its called protective styles. Many black women, including myself, find it hard to maintain it OR we just want to switch up our look...

Swetha Sankar i think it’s 100% okay for them to try new things as long as they give credit and show love for the culture they got it from. no one likes cultural appropriation, and it’s very controversial but they should be able to try things as long as they show respect.

For generations kinky, curly hair was very looked down upon by white people. As stated in the study, it was (and still is) considered unclean, nappy, unattractive... So people with natural hair were forced to straighten, perm or hide their natural hair. For some women it is very difficult to “embrace” their natural hair when the society around us disapproves of it and discriminates against it.

I’m Hispanic and I have curly hair. I’m still trying to figure out how to style it and not damage it.
My white friend always says it looks best straight, and begs to straighten it. EVEN after I style it and I’m happy with it.

Not all white Women have straight hair you know. I face those problems when people won’t touch my hair or that I didn’t like mine after a certain age.

Being Native American, people come up to me and my sisters grabbing onto our long black straight hair. Constantly asking what products we use and how often we straighten it. Please don’t touch peoples hair. We find it very disrespectful.

I do have to say...I find hair a very interesting thing. There's a whole culture around it and lingo around it in communities of color, that is completely impervious to me as a white woman who grew up in a small town with other white people. Not just natural hair types, but also the very common, everyday use of weaves, wigs, etc. I'm very interested, but I find that attempting to learn more about it without being rude or intrusive very difficult. Its especially weird for me - my sister has a mixed child, and she really doesn't treat his hair very well...but trying to learn can be difficult. Without the internet and these sorts of things, I wouldn't know anything.

I don't have time for this. I keep my hair Locked and natural. I am not about to change my hair that is a 4C hair naturally, I don't need to change it. All people have the right to have their own hair in a natural state if they want to. Whiteness and making people have straight hair is crazy and illogical and arrogant to force hair to be something that it is not.

I hate my natural hair. Because it's so hard to maintain. When people talk about curls and volume it's ugh please girl u don't want none of that. Trust me. I rather deal with having to wash thin hair so it won't get greasy, then to deal with my hair that is so thick and annoying to maintain. Some days it ain't all frizzy most days it is. And sure you can use special products, but still it's a pain in the butt lol.

You just need to find a product that works for you. Trust me, we got the better end of the stick when it comes to hair. I’d rather have too much than not enough. :)
