The West Bottoms is still such a cool area, this was before the viaduct!
My family worked in the West Bottoms during this historic period. After the flood of May 31st, 1903 ( and the subsequent June 1908 flood ); the Union Depot and Union Avenue began a steady decline. Fearing another flood and the impending railroad ststion relocation curtailed future capital improvements. Newspaper accounts described the Union Depot as dingy looking by Christmas 1909. Finally on October 31st, 1914 the last scheduled train departs the Union Depot. There is a Halloween party that evening. In the days following, the Depot is boarded shut and razed in early 1915. That same year Fred S. Doggett (Manager) announced the closing of the Blossom House and conversion into a warehouse.
Only the Depot's "1878" corner stone remains on permanent exhibit at the Union Station today.. Present Union Avenue is largely open ground. Gone are the blocks of buildings, horses, wagons and trolleys; where 1000's of people worked and lived daily.
It's totally unrecognizable. A lot of it sat empty for a century and was replaced with industrial complexes. It's heartbreaking to see the gorgeous old buildings that were lost - not to mention the streetcars
This is Kansas City's West Bottoms. On the left, you see 3 bridges going east up a steep hill. At least one cuts thru the hill as a tunnel to downtown (city center). This map shows 2 rivers. The one in the background is the Kansas River. The Kansas state line is somewhere on THIS side of the river, making about a third of this map within the state of Kansas.
Justin I can tell you the Armour Packing Company plant was open from the early 1870s to 1965. At its peak it employed about 5,000 people and they made everything from barrels for shipping, to soap and shoe polish from the byproducts. It sat on a 52 acre site that is now the site of a UPS warehouse and a trucking company.
Jacob Dold was open from 1880s to about 1900. There was a large fire at the plant sometime around 1900 and after that they only produced oleo margarine at the location.
I believe the Abernathy furniture building still stands but has been abandoned for years.
Abernathy furniture building is an apartment building now. Check out the West Bottom Flats.
Maybe I'll pop back in time and go to the A. Steinhorst & Co Pickles, Vinegar, Kraut, Preserves store. I can still smell the Pickle Works as if it were yesterday. Last time I went too far back and ended up in the Town of Kansas talking to some guy named One-eyed Ellis.😏

Kansas City is still one of the largest rail hubs in the US for freight.
