almost makes me wanna cry when i watch this, as good as he was he shouldve ruled the earth,we need this kind of music and the kind of musician he was, honest music from honest musicians,RIP Danny
Loves how he so effortlessly goes from echo to if it fails echo; starts double pickin'. Damn, he was truly the master of that type of playing. Danny, that style can be used for it all sir!
@zthetha: You are so right.. Danny was just a regular guy who happened to be a genius on guitar. He liked hot-rodding cars as much as anything, and probably would have been just as happy wrenching on '57 Chevys as anything music related. I sure am sorry Danny didn't reach out to others when he was down in the dumps, instead of taking his own life. Maybe that way, he'd have know how much people cared about him. The music business is a tough life, and Danny was just one more casualty.
R.I.P. Danny Gatton! after i had purchased my first electric guitar(a butterscotch Telecaster)i was searching for instructions on how to learn to play a wide range of different guitarstyles and found the hotlicks videos with Danny...what a revealation!i was stunned and still am,what this giant of a guitar player was able to teach me even on video. He was not only one of the greatest players i've ever heard, but also a very good instructor,as we can see here for example. What a loss!
Play these clips over and over and enjoy them more each time - Danny was not only technically superb, musically brilliant and a great teacher but a really nice guy - no pretention. A "regular guy" as I believe the US term goes. Not an atom of the charlatan in him, His premature death was not only a loss to guitarists everywhere and music in general but to the human race.
The Greatest are ALWAYS the most generous when it comes to sharing their knowledge and talents with the World. ... I had been playing guitar for decades already when I saw Danny four times in Toronto in small clubs and each time I was right at his feet trying to discern SOMETHING from 6 feet away. ... NOT A CHANCE. .... And the Greatest Guitarists in Canada were there so see The Master-- I saw players like Colin James, David Wilcox, Colin Linden and Derry Grehan at his feet, WORSHIPPING THEIR GOD! .... THAT'S why they call him The Humbler. .... (a new documentary about Danny called "The Humbler" is coming ANY TIME NOW. ... I CAN'T WAIT!)
What an amazing talent! He played with such taste and his phrasing is to this day in my humble opinion, untouchable. It has always been very hard for me to except the fact the he is not with us anymore and of course the heart breaking reason why. I've always wished that had I been blessed to meet the man when he was alive, that I could have said something, anything to make him realize his own slef worth as a human being. God bless him and his family. Peace.
Danny is admired and respected by everybody who,s heard his jawdroppin playing even the more famous and lesser guitar gods of today who look at him with envy
If he hadn't been so discouraged about his career and the fact that all the great guitar players bowed down to him but the public didn't care, he'd still be with us. Same with Roy Buchanan. Funny that they came from the same area (Baltimore and D.C.) and met the same end. Danny idolized Roy and maybe he figured if Roy couldn't make the big time, he never would either. What's ironic is if both of them had just hung in there a bit longer, they'd be huge now and widely acknowledged as the masters they were. Breathtaking musicians. I'm sure depression and alcohol/drugs won the battles.
I talked to Gatton once in Richmond during a break in his show, around the time of "88 Elmira St.", and I asked him if he'd learned a lot from Roy, and he acknowledged that he did, but he also said, "But Roy learned a lot from me too." I wish we had talked more, but I was too starstruck and didn't know what to say.
Guitar player magazine had an issue "Unknown Greats" that had a tear out sheet record--it was Danny doing what he does best playing his ass off--I was an instant fan--I have never stopped singing his praises--pulled me out of a playing slump--truly a sad loss to the music world in his tragic demise--RIP Dan--eternally grateful
Wow - what a fantastic lesson, on a gorgeous Tele, played by a guy who knows exactly what he's doing. So sorry I hadn't come across Danny Gatton before (we don't get out much in the UK), sounds he had a sad ending - such a shame, obviously a fantastic talent and seems a really really nice guy . Hope he's jamming up there with Buddy and Jimmy and all the other others.
It's what Danny used to attach his 'magic dingus box' to. The box contained switches to operate his leslie cab, echoplex and phaser effects. He removed it when people assumed he was all about the effects and tricks. Really, as we now know, he had the magic in his hands!
I have more respect to give to Danny Gatton than almost any other musician. Thankfully, there are quite a few more, both past and present, in his orbit.
Absolutely, Gatton is the benchmark for rockabilly guitar playing. One listen of "Nit' Pickin'" off his Unfinished Business album will testify to that.
Could someone outline the picking pattern for the chords heard from 2:04 - 2:12? The melody line played on the B and E strings is easy enough to work out but I can't hear clearly what is being played on the lower strings.
I'm a piano player too so I understand where he's coming from. It's like a boogie-woogie thing. Pick and fingers are like left and right hand on piano - totally independent.
at normal speed he's not doubling the finger part but when he explains it slowly he does double the finger part... doing syncopated things slowly is such a totally different thing, probably he was just quickly working it out and didn't realize even... my ocd went off the chart :) had to re-watch a bunch of times to make sure....because, you know....danny gatton...
Best travis picking teacher I've seen so far. But while he do the the double picking, I wonder if he only doubles the pick punches or if I also doubles with the fingers?
I love how he just rifs Mystery Train. Danny Gatton to me... was the what a musician should be. You could tell the guy's technique was forged from years and years of gigging in bars.
Oh gawd I can't even get Mystery Train slowly... "so what do you do when your echo machine goes on the blink... you double pick like this!!!" oh fuck off he wasn't human!!
@NreeKelBastardos I can not figure out he is such a humble guy he is a genius..Vince Gill says he is the best..He could be the guitar player around..Maybe he like to keep to himself...I have seen him with lots of people but he is not a name dropper...the guy is one of a kind fantastic...i agree with you nreek..Steve
For sale; used and abused Telecaster, may smell like beer. It was in tune when I bought it. Will trade for an in tune Tele. ( please no tuna advertisements )
"if your echo gadget goes on the fritz just double pick it" JUST double pick it? holy shit. thats like saying if you run out of ammo just kill the armed insurgent with a buck knife.
Nah man! Prince's purple guitar is more famous than either, and Jimmy page's double neck, angus youngs sg, Clap-strat, Eric johnson strat, List goes on. I'd say Lindsay buckingham's custom hybrid is more famous than the Danny Gatton tele.
I love Danny but its hard enough to try to play along with this lesson without getting fustrated but then to have his guitar slightly out of tune will drive you nuts,
almost makes me wanna cry when i watch this, as good as he was he shouldve ruled the earth,we need this kind of music and the kind of musician he was,

Among Telecaster players, Danny is a household name. Far from being underrated, he's revered. Love his playing.
Danny Gatton hands down is my favorite tele player! Thanks for the legacy you left us Danny!
"It was in tune when I bought it...."
Priceless.
or...as Hendrix said it, "Oh well, only cowboys stay in tune"
that busted my gut too Brett. ... The charm of his wit was as quick as the fire in his hands.
massive talent, sorely missed. the countless guitarist he has influenced but still relegated to the unknown to most younger players of today.

My face hurts from the huge smile I managed to maintain for 5 minutes and 17 seconds! RIP and God Bless you Danny!
"Suppose your echoe gadget goes on the blink. Well then you double pick all this stuff." Priceless!

These Danny Gatton vids are a goldmine! Thanks again...you're the man!
WOW!
Can't thank you enough 4engle for posting all these Gatton clips.
I'm going to be busy for the next few weeks :)

larry geetar , they were house mates at one time!! WOw imagine being in the bedroom between those two!
I talked to Gatton once in Richmond during a break in his show, around the time of "88 Elmira St.", and I asked him if he'd learned a lot from Roy, and he acknowledged that he did, but he also said, "But Roy learned a lot from me too." 1:41 could they obscure the fingers more there? I'm still able to see them a little bit.

Danny Gatton guitar GOD.....R.I.P.
It's what Danny used to attach his 'magic dingus box' to. The box contained switches to operate his leslie cab, echoplex and phaser effects. He removed it when people assumed he was all about the effects and tricks. Really, as we now know, he had the magic in his hands!

Excellent video!!! Great material!!! Pplease give us some more!!!
As good a teacher as he was a player. RIP.
Absolutely, Gatton is the benchmark for rockabilly guitar playing. One listen of "Nit' Pickin'" off his Unfinished Business album will testify to that.
shame he didn't play with more famous names..
I don't recall any such thing as a 'reliced' guitar back then. So it's a genuine, well played, worn in guitar.
Could someone outline the picking pattern for the chords heard from 2:04 - 2:12? The melody line played on the B and E strings is easy enough to work out but I can't hear clearly what is being played on the lower strings.
"It was in tune when I bought it!"
Thanks for the vid.
Now suppose your echo gadget goes on the blink lol , DG the best ever
Echo pedal goes on the blink......
The Edge from U2: Panics and runs off stage...
Danny Gatton: Carries on playing double speed!
I love how he first plays it with the effect pedal then proceeds to turn it off and shows you he can replicate it with his own technique
Someone knows what delay pedal is Danny using in that video, maybe a Boss delay DD what???
Im that guy playing rockabilly out there! Thanks Danny !
Do you have any more of this video? If so please upload. Don't tease us with this awsome footage!!!! HeHe
I'm a piano player too so I understand where he's coming from. It's like a boogie-woogie thing. Pick and fingers are like left and right hand on piano - totally independent.
Those Danny on those Joe Barden p'ups ,just sounds sound so good !!
Thanks for posting. Unfortunately Danny died some years ago...and the guitar world hasnn't been the same since..
4:26 I like how just the right hand pattern alone sounds menacing.
'This guitar was in tune when I bought it!' :^)
I literally lol'd when he said that. He didn't skip a beat.
Yeah, this is just something easy you can do while watching TV. Thanks Danny
Geez, that double picking really sets up a groove. Guy was a genius
at normal speed he's not doubling the finger part but when he explains it slowly he does double the finger part...
doing syncopated things slowly is such a totally different thing, probably he was just quickly working it out and didn't realize even...
my ocd went off the chart :) had to re-watch a bunch of times to make sure....because, you know....danny gatton...
What a loss to the guitar playing world.
Danny Gatton.R.I.P.
Best travis picking teacher I've seen so far.
But while he do the the double picking, I wonder if he only doubles the pick punches or if I also doubles with the fingers?
Does anyone know where I can find the rest of the chord progression?
It was in tune when I bought it! Lol!
It was in tune when I bought it.
"THE HUMBLER"
"You can lay in bed and not think about it." Love his commentary.
I love how he just rifs Mystery Train. Danny Gatton to me... was the what a musician should be. You could tell the guy's technique was forged from years and years of gigging in bars.
this is great stuff , wicked
Oh gawd I can't even get Mystery Train slowly... "so what do you do when your echo machine goes on the blink... you double pick like this!!!" oh fuck off he wasn't human!!
Cool dude- great stuff
@wungabunga
it's a '52 tele.
Very nice stuff
"it was in tune when i bought it" that made me laugh haha :D
An Army daughter recommended this. 🍀🍀
my face just melted
😮
Great teacher
anybody know what the peice is from the back of the bridge to the back of the guitar???
"magic dingus box" was mounted there
Is his guitar relicted or did he he just play it so much?
Does anyone really know it?
Have this VHS / says if you don't have a tuner the phone's dial tone's in F! Ha !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RIP Danny!
Danny is using a Roland JC-120 in this video.
"It was in tune when I bought it"
This is hard to do slow - it is for him, not for me. What a talented and very humble guitar player.
deemdoubleu
Some things are really tough to do correctly and in time slowly.
I found that out recently. Its hard to keep the proper time slow!!!
Double picking technique on the 1-4 combo @ 4:14 is super balls... good for confusing shredders (not that there's anything wrong with shredding).
@dingoswamphead "Now suppose your echo gadget goes on the blink"... LOL
Very helpful at .75x . We turtles need all we help we can git!
@srvrip1 uh, thats completely possible! Travis's had MERLE TRAVIS on the fret board. but your point is taken too.
@ksgant Thats real wear, He's the only guy so good that the whole damn fret board is worn EVERY where.
Great teaching technique. What a loss and tragedy that he took his own life.
Dig the 80's graphics....sigh...those were the days......
I think I'll save money on an echo gadget and learn to double pick like Danny
@NreeKelBastardos I can not figure out he is such a humble guy he is a genius..Vince Gill says he is the best..He could be the guitar player around..Maybe he like to keep to himself...I have seen him with lots of people but he is not a name dropper...the guy is one of a kind fantastic...i agree with you nreek..Steve
It was in tune when he bought it. ROFLMAO!
Joe Bonamassa brought me here. he said this guy was his prime mentor.
For sale; used and abused Telecaster, may smell like beer. It was in tune when I bought it. Will trade for an in tune Tele. ( please no tuna advertisements )
Danny...you left us too soon...
"if your echo gadget goes on the fritz just double pick it" JUST double pick it? holy shit. thats like saying if you run out of ammo just kill the armed insurgent with a buck knife.
Echo Gadget !
"yeah when your echo gadget goes on the blink, then you just play like this:" as if he needed an echo gadget in the first place.... lol
Well, your echo gadget dies, so you double pick it. Yeah, you just do it. Makes it seem so easy.
When he double picks this lick he's not doing it the same way slowly as he does it full speed. Watch carefully.
it's rumored he beat Ralph Machio in a head to head battle......
Nah man! Prince's purple guitar is more famous than either, and Jimmy page's double neck, angus youngs sg, Clap-strat, Eric johnson strat, List goes on. I'd say Lindsay buckingham's custom hybrid is more famous than the Danny Gatton tele.
why the hell did he kill himself i have no idea ;P
I love Danny but its hard enough to try to play along with this lesson without getting fustrated but then to have his guitar slightly out of tune will drive you nuts,
He makes it seem so easy and it's not.
4:09
@NreeKelBastardos ha ha. thought I had him there... as if!
his hands look small and chunky for a guitarist...but he got round all that...
Yeah whenever my echo gadget goes on the blink I'll just play like Danny Gatton. No worries. Not!
Breaks my heart-suicide
I knew it - guitarists even can´t count (their fingers) ..... xD
