- Sandile Mbongwa is a man who loves and respects what he does and that is making music that speaks to the masses. He was fascinated by the violin and started experimented with it in 1987, and this was when the music bug caught up with him. The discipline and the patience it takes to play a violin makes one understand what kind of character Sandile is. He chose to do the kind of music that he is comfortable and can relate to.
Maskandi music is associated with the unique traditional guitar sound. This gentleman is a grounded born perfectionist and leader. With the background he has of playing a violin, which is not common amongst maskandi musicians, it is not surprising that he makes an amazing guitarist. His mellow vocal ability captivates the ears with ease.
Sandile is the brain and the driving force behind two successful maskandi groups, Ovezuthando and Amabongwa which he started in the early 90s. Through Amabongwa, Sandile who is the lead singer and a fine guitarist dominated the music scene with the release of his hard hitting debut album, Ingwe in 2004. This album raised heads and marked the beginning of a very stimulating musical journey. The reception was alarming and the demand and fan base grew. The hype continued when they kept on entertaining maskandi fans with their music. With four sizzling albums at the palm of their hands, Indaka (2005), Emcitsheni (2006), Umkhohlisi (2007) Amabongwa show no sign of slowing down. The respect and consideration they put into making each album can easily be heard in each song
Seeing Amabongwa perform is never a wasted moment and gives you the opportunity of hearing the guitar skill that Sandile showcases, and what makes him the kind of artist that he is. They have established themselves musical and are counted as one of the maskandi acts that are making waves in the scene.
"Amabongwa was formed was formed with aim of guiding and sharing life experience to motivate while entertaining people" these are the words of the man himself, Sandile Mbongwa.
His musical journey is amazing because all of his albums are well received and enjoyed by the fans and true maskandi lovers. Amabongwa bring another entertaining and insightful album to their fans, titled Izitha.
This thirteen track album comprises of tracks such as Izitha, Izinto zami, Ngikhathele, Eratanang, these titles give you an idea of what kind of album you will be experiencing. Another striking album is brought to all music lovers, young and old.
"The message that I am passing with my music is that we all go through a lot of problems and changes in life, but it does not mean we should fail the people we love. We meet lots of friends on our way but, we must not crook them but live a peaceful life and be careful of those that come to destroy us." Sandile explained.
