This is an insane level of production. In a genre of board game content, such as top 10 lists, that normally involves talking over one or two stock images of a game, this is setting a whole new standard. I can’t explain how good this is!
Love Air, Land & Sea. Just 18 cards, but so much depth. Usually in games, once you're familiar with all the cards, the game becomes a little stale.. But not in this game. It is encouraged to get familiar with all the cards, because the more you play it, and the more you're familiar with it, the more depth the game has because it'll impact your strategy and the decisions you make. Amazing little game for 2. Highly recommended.
A great example of emergent depth through synergies & lenticular design It doesn't even stop there, since the more experienced you are, the better you know when to tactically retreat & how to bluff Getting familiar with the cards wasn't even the beginning, once you start figuring how they synergize(and how your opponent might use them for surprises & bluffs), it's a delightful journey of combo discovery
You won't regret it. Just had a game yesterday. Came down to the last few points. What makes it complex is the effects of the cards. The more you're familiar with the cards, better the strategy you can implement. I highly recommend the game.
@@ChunKyPiglets_Pro oh yeah, I saw the expansion. I prefer the actual war version, but yeah it is a bit generic though it doesn't bother me much. Will be grabbing the expansion as soon as its out. Any release date announced?
As I got back to school this semester, I don't have the money to support the Patreon, but I would gladly do so as soon as I can. The b-rolls game is amazing and that was a great list of games so far!
Interesting list so far! I'd love to see a video for a coffee shop game list, something that you could play with a stranger over a cup of coffee at a coffee shop. Some of the constraints would be shorter, easy to get started, portable, attractive, and most importantly, fun.
I've said it before, and Imma say it again. This man deserves so much more subs and views. These videos are carefully crafted and are clearly made with passion. Keep up the amazing effort you put in these videos. I love them, I love them, I love them
I like that the music for Forty-Nine (2:16) was the same music that No Rolls Barred uses for the intros to their playthrough videos. Instant recognition and board game associations.
Another great video, Jon! We love Carcassonne H&G. It's a staple of our weekly BGA game. You might want to try basic Carcassonne with Inns and Cathedrals and Traders and Builders - it plays a lot like H&G (though no rivers): extra turn for completing a city (with a builder), features that might not score at the end (doubled roads and cathedrals), etc. It's a bit long, but our weekly group has been playing that combo for years and we love it.
Fingers crossed we hit the milestones quickly, this looks like it could be a great list. Quick request - could you put the time stamps in the description before the affiliate links? Feels weird being spoiled with the names of the games, then having numbered timestamps
Hi Jon, great list so far. Do you know the card game "Elements"? It is also a small two player game in which it is also possible to withdraw. Really like the game because it is short and easy to teach/learn.
We’ve enjoyed original Carcassonne for a long time. I know you’re not a fan of expansions, but our kids gifted us Carcassonne Big Box and we love it. And it has several of the game mechanics you like in the Hunters and Gatherers edition.
Is it Tab(Aye)go or Tab(Ah)go? I use to have this game and always used the latter. Perhaps it's an English thing...lol. I enjoy that your selections are quite different from my own, and despite that you always have intriguing and interesting selections. Glad to support the channel and excited to see the upcoming games. Out of curiosity, what selection process did you use to determine your top 50?
My favourite game of all time gets in here. Hunters and Gatherers. I have an earlier version with slightly less impressive artwork. There are some overpowered tiles in the game that swing things too much but it's glorious. Great version on BGA too.
Hey Jon! Thanks for another great video! The first 5 in this series all sounds like great games! Merchants and Marauders sounds like the more social and complex version of Tiny Epic Pirates, which I find to be a fantastic game in such a small box, but I would love the added social nature of Merchants and Marauders, which I think is the missing aspect in Tiny Epic Pirates! I look forward to seeing the next games on your list, every game I've added to my collection based upon your recommendations have been huge hits at the game table!
Air Land and Sea isn't the only card game that's all about knowing when to fold - Carl Chudyk's *Red7* is the best example. And there's also, y'know, Poker.
6:05 What do you mean by "sandbox", Jon? I'm in the hobby and have heard that expression before, but I'm never quite sure what is meant by it, thanks! |:)
It means there is a lot of freedom and many things you can do and explore but you don't have to do them. To quote myself from my Top 15 Board Games of 2018: It’s called a sandbox game because you have the freedom to do whatever you want. The possibilities are limitless, just like playing in a sandbox as a kid - you could build a sandcastle, or let the sand sift through your hands, or…
They'll be back, but those videos take longer to make and I have to balance my time so that I can release videos regularly. With more support on Patreon I can make more ambitious videos more often.
On your other video you've said that buying expansions for boardgames is rather a bad idea and of your collection You would only keep a few of those. How essential and joyful volcano expansion for Tobago actually is?
Im sorry but u are totally wrong about Carcassonne:) Base game is MUCH more aggressive. “Green” version is more fun as a family game and more fun for new players. Base game instead is MUCH more chess. 1) Fields doesn’t matter in the green box. They are small and completely less expensive. However there are river systems instead, arent them? Using ur MAIN guys is much more difficult and risky. 40 v.p. fields in base game that decides who wins the hole game are just better for me 2) In the green box every single tile is equivalent. U cant get less than 4 and more than 7 in the most turns. “Roads 1 v.p.” in the blue box are PERFECT in this case. You cant get points of them using, u know, “just building”, its true. But instead u MUST fight for fields with them or ruin cities or field-conquesting for ur opponents decreasing chances to get correct tiles. I could write much more but If u see this Just try once mobile app “Carcassonne “ against the hardest bot. As a duel. He will show u everything:) As for me im not new in boardgames and my most played games in this year are War of the ring and Mage knight, but i still love classical Carcassonne more than them both:) And it wasnt even my 1st game ever, i tried it years after the game of thrones, MTG and so on. And the green box is my top-1 boardgame disappointment of the all time.
so your current top 100 is set in stone for this series, even if it hypothetically takes a long time until we get to the top 5 and things might have changed till then?
Great question! Yes it is set in stone from now. But generally I don't add newer games to my Top 100 for a while after they're released because it feels weird.
to be honest with you, if there is a top 50 that means that it's not worth much to be on that list. If you have a good game you can play it for years with only 2-3 others and the 2-3 others you can play for even longer so at your age there should maybe only be a top 10 or smth

Great video as always 👏 I need to check out Air, Land & Sea, one of those games that doesn’t sound exciting but so many people have recommended it.
