Decades ago, when I worked in Cumming, I went to Dawson Forest a few times to hunt. Long term locals told me of mutated wild life in the Forest. They say there were some strange animals roaming in those woods.

Knowing what is inside, you would have to be pretty stupid to break in (that nuclear reactor building). How would explain your symptoms to your doctor. AFTER you were in a jail cell from breaking in. Thank you.

It's was completely open for many yrs. I camped inside that building as a child. It was harmless! It's welded shut because the government doesn't want people knowing what is underground. I've been inside those buildings too. It's an amazing place, above ground and the underground complex. There is radiation there, but it's where the reactor is buried. The strange thing is, the Wildlife Management division took down all the radiation warning signs at the secured fence. They put people in danger by doing that. But government doesn't care. That spot is the only kill zone, unless you drown in the lower levels inside the reactor building. Having said all that, my childhood doctor (Dr Dunn) thought I got radiation poisoning at 15 yrs old. That could've only happened while inside the reactor building. Dawson Forest (Lockheed) was my playground. Has been for nearly 5 decades.

This is an excellent location for a second international airport for North Georgia, but the Atlanta airport mafia has continually interfered with that option. I guess we'll keep throwing money at Hartsfield for minimal efficiency gains and miss the opportunity to attract more flyers from the Chattanooga area.f

That would be a terrible spot for a second airport. Imagine the noise and traffic? They would have to widen and extend I-575 and GA-400, and connect them near Dawsonville. It would ruin the quality of life for 4-5 counties. 😅🤣😂

@frzstat can't escape growth, it can only be slightly delayed. Dawson County will be similar to Forsyth in 20 years, and Gwinnett in 50. Might as well prepare yourself and accept it. My family arrived in Gwinnett prior to 1830 and only a handful of them remain there. If a person wasn't born in an area, they have changed life for those that were. And, they shouldn't think they have the right to keep their life from changing.

@@diggernash1 I would rather see Georgia renovate old industrial areas than tear down forests and ruin wildlife habitat. The State could buy that race track in Braselton and build it there. It's right off of I-85. But rich folks live there, so that won't happen! BTW hunted on that WMA for years, and fished all over that area. Even floated the edge of the world rapids (water was low.)

@frzstat The biggest draw for the Dawson Forest site is its proximity to Atlanta and Chattanooga. Braselton negates some of that benefit. Road Atlanta is still operational and the Lanier Speedway site is far too small(as is Road Atlanta). Realistically, you want several thousand acres for the airport and surrounding commercial development. Look at an aerial photo of Hartsfield to get an idea of the scale. One could argue that a site directly on I-75 would be good, but assembling properties versus using an empty, already assembled property is a big detractor.
There is a reason that the airport authority is tied so tightly to the Dawson Forest property already.

Have to disagree with you clean water is more important than flying
