    My local Mazda dealer wanted $350 to change out the 4 spark plugs. I feel like I may spend $60 at most including the torque wrench and do this in 15 minutes after watching your video. I watched a half dozen or so about this topic and this was by far the best and gave me the most confidence. I'll let you know how it comes out.

    I replaced spark plugs in our 2008 Mazda 3 today and this video was super helpful and very easy to follow. Probably the best step-by-step car video guide that I ever watched. Thank you very much! I didn't use a torque wrench as I didn't have one but the new plugs were pretty snug and tight and I was careful not to overtighten them. On a side note, I noticed quite a bit of dust, sand and other debris so I vacuumed the area before removing the coil packs but was careful while doing so. Thank you!

      I was reluctant to get a torque wrench where the torque to tighten the plug is at the very low end of the wrench. I did a little digging, and a chart told me to tighten a quarter turn as a rule of thumb for plugs this size. (I assume this means a quarter turn past hand tight.)

    • @MorrisDugan
      @MorrisDugan 2 года назад

      UPDATE - I changed the plugs a couple of days ago. The plugs in there must have been the originals - they are marked "Ford" and 6M8G-12405-BB (Mazda #) and ILTR 5A-13G (NGK #), which corresponds to the NGK "Laser Iridium" plugs. There's no gasket on the the old plugs or the replacements. It's set up in the car to be almost impossible to cross-thread them.
      I found it impossible to tighten 1/4 turn, but I probably tightened more than 1/8. After I was done, and had a successful test drive, I took another look at the little boxes that held the new plugs, and noticed that it had a little graphic showing that you tighten them 1/16 turn!
      Now I'm thinking I should loosen the plugs and try to be precise about tightening 1/16 turn.

    Best upload for changing Mazda 3 spark plugs. No frills instructions. I don’t understand why some people say you must remove the negative battery terminal first before beginning. You pull out the plug from the coil anyway so I don’t see how you could short something, especially if ignition is off.

    One pointer to add ... if you have compressed air, blow the dust & debris from the cavity where the plugs are located after removing coils while plugs are still in place to minimize the debris and dust from entering the cylinder while removing and installing plugs.

    🛠 🏆 5-star DIY video. This is how you make a great, useful, and easy-to-follow car maintenance video: tripod-mounted camera, no distracting background music, and methodical explanation every step of the way. When I hear shops charging $200-300 for a 4-plug swap on the Mazda3 2.3 engine I have to laugh. This is not a hard maintenance item if you follow this video. The only thing I would add is that I always blow out the spark plug hole before removing the spark plug. You don't want grit, sand, or other debris to fall down into the hole once the spark plug is removed.

      When the plugs are iridium, I would not recommend gapping the plugs as the electrode tip is so small and fine that you can chip pieces from the tip. I know this from experience. I was told to never gap iridium plugs by a mechanic friend. Most come pre-gapped already, just find the ones that fit the recommended gap spec for your car. My Mazda 3 has a gap recommendation of 0.05 inches and the Autolite iridium plugs I bought came pre-gapped at 0.050. Makes the installation hassle free.

Another good rule of thumb if you don’t want to over tighten is to hand tighten it without the wrench on until it seats then put the wrench on the extension and turn it 1/2 turn more.
