Bennington PA 01.17.16: What Do You Mean, 'We're Out Of Creamsicles'??

  • I didn't make it to Bennington Curve in time to catch the Interstate heritage unit again, but it wasn't for lack of trying. With as much speed as I could safely muster in the snow - i.e., not breaking traffic laws while keeping the car upright and facing the direction of travel at all times - I made it to Tunnelhill, bounced down Bird Eye Road, and trudged through the woods - and got there just in time to see that orange-and-cream face rounding the curve on track 3. I was too preoccupied with safely lowering myself down to my perch to launch into a Yosemite Sam-like tirade of frustration at losing the race from Tipton. I was also too preoccupied to consider what else might be coming.
    It was 12:30, and I had not been standing on the rock very long when the headlight of an eastbound appeared out of the mist on track 2. ES44DC 7552, SD60M 6802, and ES44DC 7704 had a mixed intermodal consist well in hand as they squealed through Benny and continued on their way down the mountain. As the last cars approached I could see another eastbound in the distance on track 1, but in deference to negotiating the infamous 'Slide' it looked like it was barely moving. As the tail end of the intermodal disappeared around the curve, the sound of the well cars faded into a dull roar - hang on a minute...
    SD60E 7021 and SD70ACe 1166 were already working hard when I watched them haul their loaded slab train through Tipton, and now they howled at the top of their lungs as they clawed their way around the curve with their heavy consist. The pair passed the outcropping just in time to meet SD70ACe 1167, C44-9W 9214, and SD70M 2613 heading the other direction with a manifest. The dance continued until SD40Es 6331 and 6330 shoved past on the rear of the slab train, meeting sister units 6327 and 6305 in the distance as the latter brought the rear of their train safely off the Slide.
    The show wasn't quite done yet. Seventeen minutes later, another roaring crescendo built in the east as a westbound fought its way up the mountain. The familiar profile of a Dash 9 poked out from behind the trees, followed by another - and then the engines kept on coming, eight units in total: C44-9Ws 9272 and 9620, SD70M-2 2657, SD60M 6805, SD70M 2623, GP38-2 5342, SD40-2 3366, and SD60I 6718. On the rear of the long parade of mixed freight, SD40Es 6325 and 6326 sang their own powerful duet as they shoved on towards Gallitzin. The dead in Bennington Cemetery could finally go back to sleep.

    Hi, it’s Jim Mumford, met you at the Station Inn the other day, one of the guys from Canada.
    Really impressed with your video style, partially I guess due to it being quite similar to mine.😅

      Hi Jim, and thanks! I hope the rest of your trip was as good as mine. Well worth the sore feet and pulled muscles that I'm now nursing back at home. 😁

    You get points for even just attempting to get to that spot during the Winter months. There may not have been much precipitation on the ground on this particular day, but I can't imagine that Strip Mines Rd/Bird Eye Rd are maintained very well in the Winter, if at all. Creamsicle or not, the time spent there definitely yielded some great action. It was nice seeing that 60N again, loaded slab trains on that side of the hill have always been my favorite thing to see while out on the Pittsburgh Line. That 2657 was howling up a storm on what appeared to be a late running 17G there at the end, one could still hear it even after the power had passed around the curve with the camera and mic pointed in the other direction, I can't imagine how long the sound carried being there on the rocks firsthand to hear it.

      At least part of the reason for the sound carrying with the camera pointed the other direction is the mic I'm using. I shelved the Rode SVM along with my HV20 in 2012 when I upgraded to an HF-G10 and a Canon SM-V1 5.1 surround mic. I render all the clips as MP4 with a 5.1-channel AAC soundtrack, but RUclips downsamples it to stereo. What would otherwise be the rear channels getting mixed back in still adds something to the sound I think. I have a 5.1 speaker setup on my workstation that does the original clips justice.
      I could swear they filled in some of the potholes on Strip Mines Road this year, but it's still a fun drive in the Subaru. On my way out, I raced a 5-unit stack train up to the point where the road bears right at the tunnel. It's a shame I didn't have a GoPro to record the occasion.

    Man, you really are lucky with meets on Bennington Curve. All the more reason I will be going there- thanks to your directions. Looks like you go in all kinds of weather, and so do I here in Ohio.

    I would love to be able to spend a day or two shadowing a rail worker or workers. From loading to actually cruising down the rail to wherever it is they are going. I wish I could see the whole process. It seems fascinating. Something most people never think about let alone see.

      @FastFlyingVirginian  5 лет назад

      They can be sneaky like that. Even moreso when there's snow on the ground to dampen the ambient noise.

    Does anyone know what the steel loads are exactly called in the gondolas beginning at 4:48?

    • @FastFlyingVirginian
      @FastFlyingVirginian  7 лет назад

      Slabs. I believe the train originates in Camden, NJ and delivers the slabs to a plant in Farrell, PA for processing.

    • @wolfgang548

      Thank you. That'll be helpful for modeling these for some of my gondolas.

      You're welcome! Depending on the era you're modeling, NS has since taken delivery of new gondolas for slab service; the old beat-up ones seen here are rapidly disappearing.

      I model from the late 90's to the present. I'm interested to see what type of slab cars they're going to receive.

    • @FastFlyingVirginian
      @FastFlyingVirginian  7 лет назад

      They've already got most if not all of them by now, I think; the model number is G122. I saw a few trains that had both kinds of cars, then some that were solid consists of the new cars. I have a video on deck from last August that includes an eastbound empty slab train with a cut of the new gons at the front and a few more spread throughout the train.
