    I agree with Sherman and Brandon Staley should’ve been fired at halftime last night. (He should’ve been fired after the playoff choke in Jacksonville last season though.)

    With Staley now fired, let's remember that the Chargers have the dubious distinction of firing their coach (Marty Schottenheimer) after a 14-2 season. Like... who besides the Chargers would fire a coach after a 14-2 season?

      Schottenheimer has to be rated as one of the greatest coaches of all time for that reason alone. Who else would’ve had the skill, wherewithal and patience to rebuild the Chargers from the ground up and turn them into a 14-2 team? Jimmy Johnson? Joe Gibbs? Bill Walsh? Maybe Marv Levy since he made the Bills a contender. Maybe Tom Landry or Vince Lombardi. The list isn’t very long. With as cursed as that franchise is, what Marty did is little short of miraculous.

    I remember Staley's first year constantly going for it on 4th down and losing close games directly due to never kicking easy field goals. Then forcing the Raiders to win an OT guy when they were content with a tie and both teams making the playoffs. He always acted like the media was crazy for second guessing his stupid decisions.

    • @respectdawildo_danjones508
      @respectdawildo_danjones508 10 месяцев назад +2

      Actually the “TIE” I would give some leeway to tbh, I’d be trying for the win as well, I always thought the media over blew that one but all the rest they haven’t
      I would have done the same, you play to win the game, a division rival not playing to win is unheard of and I wouldn’t expect it, however there’s a million other incidents that should have been the end of him by now and I just don’t think that’s one of them though

      The stupid tie game thing is the most ridiculous of staley criticisms. The raiders weren't gonna fuckin kneel down against their division rival. There's plenty to criticize staley for besides the nonsense sports journo takes on that time out.

    There has even been a coach that has been fired at halftime in the Premier League as in 2007 during a UEFA Cup (now Europa League) match vs Spanish side Getafe, Tottenham coach Martin Jol found out at halftime that he had been fired even though the board of directors was going to announce it at the end of the match to the press. As you can imagine the halftime team talk Jol gave to the Tottenham players was very awkward & did not inspire the players at all as Tottenham lost to Getafe 2-1. I should point out that Jol was fired even though Tottenham was in a decent position in the Premier League despite losing the first two matches of the season. Jol was replaced by Juande Ramos (who left Sevilla where he won back to back UEFA Cups the previous two seasons) who completely tanked the club as they were in the relegation zone by Christmas. This was a team that had players the caliber of Robbie Keane, Jermaine Defoe & Gareth Bale. Tottenham barely stayed in the Premier League (and completely underachieved as they were expected to be in the Champions League places) as they finished 11th but needed to win their final 3 matches to avoid relegation. This is easily the worst coaching change in Premier League history.

    while there hasn't been a firing like this since, I'm sure there's been a few coaches that got told "You're done after this game," by owners at halftime.

    Considering how highly Staley holds himself as the HC, should be exactly the reason why he needs to go.

    There's another one that's close. In week 16 of the 1985 season, the Cardinals fired Jim Hanifan by changing the locks on the door to his office at halftime. I've seen that whole game - so that I don't get into channel trouble I will only say HTTR 1983 - and the Big Red didn't seem to look like they quit on him.

    I like how the chargers have been going through a revolving door of head coaches over the last 3 decades, yet never realize its the owner and management that fails the team year in and year out since 1994 (and that was shit luck they made the big game that year) by micromanaging everything while paying attention to nothing the team actually does. Hell, I don't think Tom Telesco ever even attended or watched a chargers game during his tenure.
