    Love the "Cracking bit of kit"! Why can't we yanks be so expressive!

    Great video. Recently acquired a Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 in .270; looking forward to getting into the woods this fall and putting the open sights to work!

    Well done lads. I'm glad you are getting back to basics, as a lot of us just can't afford the high end optics you usually show on here and, if I may be so bold, the venerable 7x57 Mauser (275 Rigby) is all you need, unless you are chasing the big five in Africa.

    Good video! So many take open sights for granted. They are what I learned on when I was young and a scope was for those that could afford such a luxury. Now, most hunting rifles made don't even have iron sights and are just drilled and tapped to fit whatever scope people want to put on. I always question this because if for some reason you break your optics, what are you left with? A rifle that is going to be near impossible to aim and if you have to depend on it for survival you've basically got a club that makes a big bang. I would tell all manufacturers to start putting on the irons again.

    7x57 is a highly underrated cartridge. there is nothing in europe you can not hunt with it.
    great shots.

    Im hunting deer , elk , moose this year with my newly aquired remington 742 30.06 caliber shooting with open sights. I took off the scope that came with it. I was able to drop anything i shot at with my 308 lever rifle before I traded it then went to 303 british for a season then this year will be the semi auto 742 woodsmaster. Make that browning bar mk1 made in belgium 1970 in 270 winchester for my new hunting rifle for this hunting season.

    I'm 57 and when I was a teenager, everyone used irons and usually a Winchester '94 in 30-30. Even with younger eyes, we limited ourselves to 50-75yds. I still prefer irons over scopes but most of the places I hunt are heavily wooded areas so scopes turned up past 2-3x are not really very helpful. I do appreciate my 275/7x57 though, punches hard enough to drop anything less than a bull elephant and slower than a tiger. Great video to inspire others to reawaken the lost art of using irons.

    Great video, I have had authorisation to use my muzzle loading rifle and that has only open sights. Every time I have been out with it thus far any deer spotted have been to far away. I have limited myself to 50 yards. As you say on the range it all looks good but I did line up on a deer that I had no intention of shooting just to see how well the sights would stand out, it was around 100 yards and in the early morning even if I wanted to take the shot I could not see the foresight clearly. One day, in the right light, right conditions, and very close I may bag my deer.
    Looking forward to your next video

    I've hunted with open sights for over 50 years here in the USA... but finally my eyesight has gotten to the point that optics are a must for me now.It's an adjustment for sure,but at least I can still enjoy the hunt and harvest food for my table.

      Beowulf, it was the same for my grandfather. He sticked to open sights for as long as his eyesight allowed him.

    I’m going to take off my high end Leupold and use my iron sights especially since I’m only shooting at less than 80 yards historically

    Would love to actually see detail of the open sights, since the title is open sights. Also, when shooting off hand did you make use of your sling?

    • @peterjones4442
      @peterjones4442 2 года назад

      Thanks for the comment, I make use of the sling whenever I remember to! Its always a good tip for accurate off-hand shooting. Thanks for watching!

    I hate people who "hunt" shooting at 300 yrds. The shorter the shot the better you are. Creep on it, stalk it, actually hunt for fs.
