Gosh, I miss Alex. "The Singer, Not the Song." indeed, but of course Alex had exquisite taste. A human jukebox, with the purtiest voice.

He had such presence. His voice and guitar always stood out over the mix. He was always a Star.

My belated brother loved TFC and got to know this band quite well (he was a Celtic supporter too),I went along with him to see them at the Lemon Tree, got backstage afterwards ,plenty booze & smoked hash with them.
If I've told this story before STV ,forgive me , I'm the big 5 0 this weekend ....My old man brain is kicking in.

Did you catch how LX threw the "Theme to A Summer Place" into his solo?

I always thought he was playing the organ riff from “Time is Tight” by Booker T. and the MGs. They’re similar.

The original recording by Eddie Floyd has a guitar solo that quotes "Theme to a Summer Place". Definitely not "Time is Tight".

I'm a huge Big Star fan. Never really cared much about Alex Chilton's solo career. I'm also a huge Teenage Fanclub fan and I know they owe a huge debt to Big Star so these two talents playing together is obviously logical and it sounds pretty great.

I was lucky. The first record I ever bought as a 6 year old was The Letter, so I went with Alex on the journey of his life…as such, the solo stuff made sense to me when it happened. To play someone Daisy Glaze and then Bangkok would be a mistake. They’ll hate it, when they shouldn’t.

@jeffshoemaker2462 Alex was never predictable, he never did things the easy way.

@@richalderson6069 He certainly didn’t. Even I had issues with some of the later records, like A Man Called Destruction. They sit better with me now that I have gotten older. But I bought Like Flies when it cane out, and the 19 year old musical psychopath that I was was immediately sucked in. I sure do miss him.

These are covers. The first one is "I've Never Found a Girl (To Love Me Like You Do)", originally by the great soul singer Eddie Floyd. The other one is "My Heart Stood Still" written by Rodgers & Hart for a 1927 revue and later sung/played by Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Chet Baker, Bill Evans, etc.
