    Alex was one of three acts whose taste in covers were as hip as mine.

    Follow the spirit: 50s US blues to England, returned via the 60s British Invasion, reflected by 70s Big Star, bounced back via 90s Teenage Fan Club and spun into the vortex of this video :)

    On the show when it went out there was a brief chat where Alex sang a little bit of our BMX Bandits song Disco Girl.

    The arrangement of "My Heart Stood Still" is from the 1962 version by Bernadette Carroll, which takes the Rodgers and Hart standard and turns it into teen pop. Tip of the hat to the blogger at the web site adioslounge for pointing this out to me, plus also discussing some of the finer points of the original version of "Never Found Me a Girl".

    I have only recently been listening to Teenage Fanclub and immediately I thought there was a link to Alex and Big Star. I imagine they were fans of his! I don't think much of this song though am a huge fan of both bands!

    Think it's 1993 [same year they played together in the 13th Note], TV show was "NB" on Scottish Television. Janice Forsyth I think introduced this (thinking back when it was actually on the telly, last time I saw this!)

      @@irish66 Ok - if you knew anything about Alex Chilton and TFC you’d know that whilst there was a mutual admiration thing going on it wouldn’t have been so obvious to both set of folks as to JUST cover Big Star or old Box Tops/Alex Chilton solo material.
      I think there is footage of the playing September Gurls.
      Alex wouldn’t have wanted to do that and TFC, whilst being fans wouldn’t have wanted to be so gauche about it. If Alex Chilton wants to rock up and play some old soul or show tunes - then cool - that’s what they’ll do.
      From contemporary accounts when this meeting took place they barely talked about Big Star and just cracked on with working out what they were gonna play. Alex wasn’t solely tied to his past and whilst yes he got Big Star (sort of) together again (the Posies etc) he also played Box Tops shows and liked to perform old jazz standards.

    PAULisDEADMANnumber9/peterpowerpop: Alex is playing a 1958 Gibson ES-225 w/ Bigsby tremolo tailpiece. The ES-135 was a somewhat similar model that was released in the early 1990s.

    Alex would’ve been what, about 41 here? Only 18 years to go. That sucks. I’d have liked to have heard a 74 year old Alex coving his eclectic sets.

    The arrangement sounds a lot like "Crystal blue persuasion", ironically, a date rape song

      +Jerome Goverman How is that ironic?

    • @govbop
      @govbop 9 лет назад

      Well, ironic to me personally, because I've heard the song for 30 years and have never paid attn to the lyrics until Bill Cosby, and ironic in general because it's such a catchy pop innocent melody.

    • @JeffaHensley
      @JeffaHensley 2 года назад +1

      How in any possible way is “Crystal Blue Persuasion” a date rape song? Look up the lyrics, it’s just strait forward “love the world and everyone in it because there’s a new age dawning” psychedelic pop,…. You have to read in, ENTIRELY ON YOUR OWN anything like something that advocates “date rape”,….
