Every time Shadow shows his softer side is when he recollects his memories with Maria and how happy he used to be when he was with her and that now that she’s gone, he’s changed drastically. I hope in Sonic movie 3 when we see his early memories of his time on the ARK and with Maria, he used to be like Sonic, very carefree, happy, and acting like a kid. But after Maria’s death, he’s now the stoic, serious, and revenge-fueled hedgehog we see during the movie because of his promise to Maria because she meant that much to him he was willing to destroy the planet they both longed to visit someday, only to cause Shadow nothing but pain
Good lord, the characterization of both characters through the voice acting and animations is insane Seeing Shadow try to stay stoic, but his voice betraying him as he speaks to Maria is... heartwrenching and telling. Not to mention the few moments and time at the end where you animate him to reveal his hidden emotions through more than voice. That broke my heart. I never thought I could feel this happy and this distraught at the same time, yet here we are. I don’t know who I feel more bad for, the innocent child who died before she could do the one thing she always wanted and was forced to leave behind the person she loved most or the immortal creature who lost the person he loved and will now wander the earth, probably forever, without her by his side.

Shadow's story brings one theme to the Sonic franchise that I never understood before losing someone close to me: ... ...that you always think them. No matter what or why, they stay with you even when life goes on. People may get tired of you dealing with it - hell, YOU get tired without trying to - but still, you rather be tired of them haunting you than the possibility of never knowing them. I'm glad I knew someone like that, and Shadow reminds me I'm not alone is missing someone.
This was so touching. Really harkens back to the days when Shadow had more to his character than just being a grumpy edgelord. It would be nice for him to have this kind of closure with Maria.
This reminds me very much of when Rocket reunited with Lyla in Guardians Vol 3 after her heartbreaking death. Actually come to think about it, both Shadow & Rocket's backstories are very similar to each other.
I love Shadow's initial reaction to seeing her. He instantly knows that she's not real but doesn't know if it's a dream, a nightmare, or someone messing with him. But he still goes to Maria because he misses her.
Oh my god This is warming my heart!!!! Comic dubs are one thing, but this animation of these two makes the experience of watching them so much better! this made me tear up
This is why bringing back Shadow after Sonic Adventure 2 was a mistake, because it diminished the emotional impact of him fulfilling Maria's dying wish to save Earth at the cost of his own life and then reuniting with Maria in Heaven.
if not for bringing him back we would have never gotten the evolution of his character seen from heroes through 06 though, and shadow generations wouldn't be possible

The point of his memory loss & his own game was to separate the shadow we have now from the shadow in SA2. It was a really smart way to bring him back imo. It means SA2 shadow & wut he was can stay intact while ST & SEGA use this new version of the character to build on
So wonderful, emotional, heartfelt, and beautiful. A proper masterpiece. Beautiful work by the cast. And wonderfully produced and animated. This is just something else. A very poignant story.
This better be a dream. Cuz Shadow doesn't go to that Space Colony Ark anymore after what happened 50 years ago.And Maria's still dead. The moment of the Sonic Adventure 2 story is tear breaking to other people. But luckily,we still have the Fearless Year of Shadow coming.
This really captures the bond they used to have. A lot of people saw Maria as annoying but if they really delved into the history and empathize with Shadow’s past- she was such a pure character and she’s the reason Shadow is the way he is.
