  • Hi everyone, welcome back to this last trip onboard Corail coaches haul by BB 67400 series from SNCF both were made In the 70s and were the workhorse of SNCF during decades. 2019 were fatal for these trains. Here's my last trip onboard this train on the Paris-Boulogne line

    Dear Thibaud, I’m a 60 y/o man but still young at heart. This video reminds me good times ! Sometimes, when I’m not in a hurry when traveling for business from Paris to Lyon, or reverse, if weather is shiny, I book a ticket using the old imperial line. That’s mean 4h50 journey in comparison with 2h by TGV, 4h50 is quite a lot, when I was young it’s was shorter because the train was often with no stop between the two large cities Paris and Lyon, But the smelling of theses good old times is priceless : I have my picnic, I can read quietly and even work with an extra battery pack for my phone and my computer. Thanks you for these moments you share with me and all of us in europe young man ! Best regards.

    Excellent video. Merci beaucoup ! Even though I am an Englishman, I will say I will greatly miss loco-hauled Corail trains in France. Corail coaches were some of the most comfortable coaches in the world ! (Along with Sorefame coaches in Portugal and B3 and B5 coaches in Norway.) My usual start was the 05.25 Calais Ville to Paris Nord, and Train 201 "Night Ferry" 22.07 Paris St. Lazare to Dieppe Maritime, back home. I remember Boulogne Maritime and Calais Maritime. The use of 2 x BB67400 to Amiens, and either a BB22200 or a BB15000 to Paris Nord was so much better than anything that existed on our side of the Channel. Mind you, the use of a CC72000 from Calais Ville to Amiens, was my favourite. I even rode in the cab with the driver on a CC72000 from Paris Est to Troyes ! Truly formidable ! I also took a CC72000 on a through working Paris Est to Bale (Basel) without a loco change at Mulhouse or Belfort. Je amour SNCF.

    On 31st.March 1970 I traveled from Calais Maritime to Paris Nord. We were hauled by steam from Calais to Amiens and then electric from Amiens to Paris. The difference in speed was notable. I went back to Calais about ten years ago and could not find any trace of Calais Maritime. By the way were were going on a school trip from Southampton to Yugoslavia and it was train and coach all the way. On the way back we went by couchette train from Venice to Calais overnight on one train...a long time but no changes necessary. C'est bon. A plus tard.

      Funny I remember around a similar date in May 1970, we were steam hauled from Amiens to Boulogne and then caught a bus from the Ville station to the " Hoverport ". The thing I never forgot was as the train puffed out of the station towards Calais it began snowing ( it was May ) I can still see the train curving round into the tunnel with the snow falling in my memory.

    Old coaches, best coaches. Right up to ICE2 they made train travel comfortable. Now it's just fit as many on as possible...

      Tomáš Palíšek as someone who lives in Germany and takes lots of DB trains, I’m very skeptical of that. I think when they “improve” it, there will be little difference

      @Tomáš Palíšek here in Italy private carrier Italo already did this. But, despite the seat, an high density train remains an high density train.
      Way worse than a "old school" train as ETR500 (more or less the equivalent of ICE1 and 2)

    I visited France a few weeks ago and took a early morning service from Annecy to Lyon Part Dieu and was really impressed by the corail coaches because of the really good A/C and the private compartments. Hope they'll stay in service on some lines until my next visit. I really enjoyed the smooth and quiet ride.

    Apart from the professional and aesthetic aspect of the presentation of this trip and the train that marked an epoch in French railway traffic, but also across Europe, really experienced even though you are still very young, in the video you bring us expressed sentimental moments that you even artistically packaged so a walk through the corridors of the station, the platform and through the train awakened in me a wide range of memories of my youth and travels to Europe in the '80s and' 90s. Thank you very much for that, and especially because at the end of half a century of my life I no longer have objective opportunities to embark on railway adventures as you do today, but because of the time in which we live and thanks to technical and technological achievements, in almost in any case, I am virtually present on each of your trips and on train trips with a couple of other extremely successful colleagues of yours. However, let my gratitude to you and your work, which is available to me here, complete this message, because I risk getting carried away and starting to play with details, and this is not exactly the place for something like that. I believe that you are successful as an engineer in your job, as your video works on you tube confirm. Fortunately, the VTU car did not have 8-seat compartments as in the IC for Normandy; this on the way from your hometown was like first class a few decades ago, so a real treat!

    Great memories - as the son of a British Rail employee I covered thousands of miles in Corail coaches including on the double headed services Calais and Boulogne to Amiens then electric to Paris Gare du Nord.. Best wide undoubtedly was the Cevenol from Paris to Beziers. Is it still running? I heard talk of the line closing.. Wonderful memories.. Merci et adieu Corail..

    Whoa, crazy to think these things are being retired. Growing up, the Corail / Eurofirma coaches always screamed "modern" to me, and I'm only in my late 20s. And yet, on the flipside, it's incredible to see compartment coaches in use in 2019 - even my earliest memories of train travel in the UK were always on trains with open plan coaches - compartments were very much relegated to heritage railways by the 1990s. Which is a shame, as they're a far comfier experience. Not so sure about the legroom on these ones mind you!

      Well, here, in Czechia, compartments can be found on almost every loco-hauled express. On the main lines, the standard of 6 seats per compartment was already introduced to the full, but on some less important lines (e. g. Brno-Pilsen), refurbished old coaches with 8 seats per compartment (basically 2 banks for 4 people each, equipped with a deployable armrest in the middle) are still in use.
      Open plan coaches can be found on the trains as well. Nevertheless, I prefer compartments.

      The 4-VEP and 4-CIG slam door trains on the Southern 3rd rail electrified lines had a few compartments (but not full compartment coaches) and they ran until 2007.

    Great video, sad to see your favourite trainset get replaced by a new EMU. While we have to appreciate innovation, this can be nostalgic and sad for a railfan. I loved the vibe of the train.

    Wow a glimpse of Boulogne Ville as it looks now, last time I stood on those platforms was in 1972. I remember how it was back then, the station looks the same but unkept but of course the traction has changed .when I spent the summer of 1970 in Boulogne most traffic was hauled by 141R,s and BB66000,s running in pairs with a heating van , there was a depot on the right of the line to Amiens, just over the river.I remember in 1971 when the 141R,s departed and the massive CC72000,s took over on the expresses to Paris, the only DMU,s were a handful of Autrails on omnibus services, everything else was engine and coaches.Not sure if the station at the harbour is still open, it was novel to see the boat trains moving at walking pace along the road.France has a fantastic rail network and it will be sad to see the end of loco hauled passenger trains, I,m so glad I lived through that time and have seen the transformation from Steam to TGV.

    Wouah, ces corails ont vraiment eu une "petite" rénovation par rapport au reste du parc... Ou bien ils ont été les premiers rénovés et le reste du parc a eu le droit à des améliorations supplémentaires (notamment les prises de courant...)
    L'accostage à Amiens était vraiment précis, gg au mécano.
    Il reste aussi des BB67400 qui tractent des RIB à Paris Est (vers 17h ou 18h pour La Ferté Milon). :)

    For me, Corail coaches *are* French railways. The mainstay of anything non-TGV or local services when I first started holidaying in France as a child (late 90s) and a rake of Corail coaches for me on a platform is what I'll always remember from my journeys over there.
    Thankfully when I lived in France for a little bit I was able to do the Transilien P commuter service behind a BB67400 on a couple of occasions, but can't see that making a comeback post-COVID-19.

    What a shame. These trains are like real intercity trains I love those carriages. Being grew up with the Dutch Nez Cassé NS 1600/1700/1800 which are beautiful locomotives NS put a lot of 1700 out of service same with the 1800s 13/14 years ago. Hopefully the French Nez Cassés will still live on with the iconic Corail carriages.

    I lived in Nemour for a while in the early 80's and loved watching these Corails arrive at Gare de Lyon...as I waited for the older commuter train. Never got to ride one until your video - thanks for showing me what I missed...hopefully I'll still get to ride one some day.
    Dirty windows - Amtrak is not much better, at least here in the Northwest. They have a large car wash type machine in the Seattle yards...apparently it doesn't get used much or doesn't work.

      Oui mais ils ont fait leur temps ! Je comprends l'intense bonheur d'emprunter un beau Corail qui est très émotif pour un voyage d'agrément, moi-même je l'ai déjà fait. Et avec beaucoup de satisfaction. Mais, lorsqu'il s'agit d'aller à la fac, Marseille-Toulouse alors, pour un master ou un doctorat par exemple, donc ce n'est pas un voyage d'agrément, le Corail est pénible, vieux, vieillot, vieillissant, ce n'est pas la même chose que je recherche.

      @@louislegrand2865 Je suis d'accord avec vous sur le fait que les Corail sont vieux. Mais le problème avec les nouveaux matériels qui les remplace, c'est leur confort. Les sièges sont moins confortables que dans les Corail. (Je parle du Coradia Liner, Regiolis et RÉGIO2N) C'est sûr, les portes sont plus grandes, le couloir est plus large, mais le confort est quand même important pour des longues distances.

      Bah en vrai dire tu sais, la distance n'est pas vraiment longue. C'est rien du tout. Et vu le prix de certains trains assurant la liaison, on a pris le bus souvent... je sais que ce n'est pas un beau pour un passionné de train ... mais le prix, même si on avait un abonnement du train, est bien moins cher ! Quant au confort, parlons-en ! On a eu des problèmes certaines fois, dont une fois avec un monsieur très méchant, sur les bagages. Bien qu'on était deux et que les bagages étaient dans les normes, le train venant de Bordeaux et étant plein, on n'a pas pu mettre convenablement nos bagages, il manquait d'espace, après on a trouvé une place pour les mettre là où il faut, le monsieur très méchant à Marseille nous a grondé... enfin passons toute une histoire... bref pas de place pour les bagages, même de taille normale, quand le train est plein... le confort, parlons-en ! Je n'ai pas du tout trouvé confortable, ça manquait d'air, d'aération, la climatisation était en panne ou très faible en pleine chaleur de juin... Personnellement, et cela reflète mes goûts personnels, je suis pour le futur, l'avenir... A force d'être nostalgique, imagine les gens qui dans les années... je ne sais pas... on vu apparaître les premiers trains électriques, alors qu'avant ils étaient à vapeur... ils ont du pleurer VIVE LA VAPEUR et se moquer des Corail étant trop novateurs à leur goût et, toujours selon ces personnes, manquer de confort... Je suis pour l'avenir et les trains à grande vitesse, et ces beaux Intercités tous neufs avec plein de confort et d'espace où le troisième millénaire se voit sentir. Au fait, je suis étudiant.

    I travelled from London to Paris about 3 times in the 1980s, so I remember the Corail coaches. In these days the journey would take a whole day, starting with the train from Victoria to Dover Western Docks (The station no longer exists), then on to the ferry to Calais or Boulogne. The train to Paris was double headed by diesels to Aliens where an electric loco took over. You had time to get out of the train to watch the change. Shame to see an era come to an end, but as they say, nothing lasts forever.

    Brilliant! I once had Jouef models of these locos. I have always wanted to travel on French trains, especially the Train Bleu but never did. Sad! Merci. Australia.

    I hope the Corails never die, they are great and iconic carriages! You should do a review on the Portuguese InterCidades trains which also use Corail carriages, and some seats (1st class) are almost the same as those old SNCF ones!

    This sadly is the state of affairs in most places! Loco hauled trains and carriages are to me what trains should be! Spacious, often comfortable with decent window views! We lost ours in the UK many years ago and what replaced them like yours look flash but are cramped, passengers stuffed in, no comfort and even some seats directly next to a column between windows! So nothing to see as well! The golden age of train travel is over and cattle trains are the future! Pity!

      The loco hauled trains have just gone from Greater Anglia, being withdrawn at the end of March. Once I'm able to do so, I plan to take a trip on the new Class 745 Flirts, which I have heard good things about.

      Silent Hunter May I recommend you look up the new Transpennine Express trains - loco hauled using brand new diesel Hitachi trains. The longest run is Liverpool Lime Street to Scarborough- coast to coast! Brand new carriages too!

    Reminds me of the time back in end of 2013 when I caught a train from Vienna to Graz. It had come from Poland and was a proper old-school Polish train.
    I loved it !
    I've since caught trains to/from Graz, Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, Bucharest & Constanta.
    Some great journeys and trains on those routes !
    I've also travelled a local route out of Grenoble.

    CP (Portuguese Railways) still uses these Corail coaches and have very similar interiors

    I remember using this route when it was part of the train-ferry-train service from London to Paris, before Eurostar and cheap flights. Two 67400s and a long string of Corail coaches; such an improvement on the old 4-CEPs from London to Dover or Folkestone! The 67400s were replaced by an electric at Amiens for a fast ride to Paris.

    Hello ! Thanks for this very nice video. BB67400 are amazing, and obviously in my 1/160 collection ! We live in Louvres (95), so along the Amien's line, historic one, but not so close to "Vemar's triangle" also. And as my husband is from Argentina ... We enjoy going to Boulogne / Mer . It's a nice city ! Once again, thanks for this video.

    I have always loved the Corail coaches, they are spacious, comfy and quiet. Sadly nowadays they are being replaced by modern, shorter doubledeckers trains that just arent as comfortable....

    Ahh ... les souvenirs. J'ai passé une grande partie de ma jeunesse à Desvres, une petite ville autour de Boulogne qui était un port avec des ferries pour Douvres dans les années 1970, et je prenais souvent ces trains. En ce moment je suis chez moi dans le nord de l'Angleterre avec votre vidéo devant et à côté d'une bouteille de Château Naudin (vin rouge) que j'ai achetée en janvier dernier au Leclerc Grand Surface à Outreau. (Le mec peut quitter Boulogne mais Boulogne ne quitte jamais le mec ...!)

    I remember travelling between Amsterdam and Paris-Nord on the night train around 1990. Corail rolling stock (original interior), very comfortable. Only minus was that it halted for several hours (on batteries) in the middle of the night in a little town in northern France: Aulnoye.

    Interesting to watch. Sometimes I travelled on Corail stock between Calais Maritime and Gare du Nord, before ‘Eurostar’ came to life. There are quite a few ‘cab ride’ videos to do with the BB67400 type in service, e.g. just recently I came across one on a suburban service from Gare de l’Est to La Ferté Milon. Most of that route was under the overhead electric - just the last short section that was not. It mentioned the final depot where this class is maintained; not long for them now.

    Nice video,that diesel engine it's really beautiful and also the coaches!!
    By the way im really impressed by the fact that exist a diesel high speed train for go to Boulogne and same thing for Intercites!! Dude it's really impressive,for me it's a news because in my country Italy this system in non-electrified lines doesn't exist,wow!

    Never got to see these but I know how you feel, December 2019 was the last run of the Class 314 'PEP' EMUs which were local to me, loved them to bits and they went hope some BB67400s and Corail coaches are preserved as from all the pictures I've seen of them over the years they look so pretty, especially the BB7400s (I don't know, the electric ones that got used in America) in the old SNCF Orange and Grey colours with original SNCF branding, very smart.

    Decent seats for a 40+ year old train. They should export some of these coaches over to the UK if Network Rail could be bothered to narrow the platform edges a bit...

    SNCF should buying new passenger cars if they renew the fleet. This is the trend in Europe because passengers like to sleep during train journeys. For example, the first passenger coaches for ÖBB that are going to be part of the new generation of Nightjet trains rolled out of the Siemens factory.

    Un 67400 circule encore avec des RIB sur l'unique aller-retour Paris-Est - La Ferté-Milon non ? Je l'ai pris il y a deux ans et j'aimerais bien la reprendre bientôt

      En relation régulière et en période de trafic normal, il y a 1 train le matin qui part de 7h je crois de la Ferté, et dans l'autre sens, il y a un train qui part de Paris Est vers 17h ou 18h.

    I'm sad, I used to like those trains. RENFE ran them too but the last locomotive hauled diagram in Spain has gone now. The Roma Termini architecture also inspired Barking station on the London Tilbury and Southend lines in East London but I'm not sure whether it was the same architect. It's worth a visit but in poor condition nowadays.

    Boulogne, does someone still remember the time when direct trains were leaving Boulogne (Maritime) to Italy? Direct trains were running to Venice and even to Naples!

    When Joop Zoetemelk won the Tour de France in 1980 I traveled from Rotterdam to Paris with the Corail couches. Very comfortable. In the Netherlands we still use intercity coaches with the same famous Y32 bogies as Corail. fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voiture_ICR?wprov=sfla1.

    @Simply Railway the BB 64700 who pulled the train until Amiens and there changes for the SNCF BB 22000 locomotive from SNCF that takes the part Amiens to Paris Nord and the SNCF BB22000 looks like our dutch NS 1600 1700 and 1800 locs

      Marco Geurts it’s because the NS 1600 1700 and 1800 were built by Alstom, the same manufacturer as the BB 64700. Basically they just changed some technical parts but kept the design.

    Very interesting video! This sort of train has long been dead in the UK as our privatised system forces stuff like locomotive changes to basically never happen and everything as long since been replaced with DMUs and EMUs. The compartment carriages are exceptionally rare in the UK, and I don't think have been used in service for over 20 years at this point ( though there are lots of railtours that still do).
    I hate to say this, but as I'm studying languages I notice this, at 9:33 you say "I've to admit...." with that expression you can't really contract it to "I've" when writing it, when speaking you can pronounce it pretty much like "I've", but you have to write " *I have* to admit that this surprised me", otherwise though your English is all correct:)

    Salut j'ai vraiment adoré ta vidéo. On sent que tu est vraiment passionné des trains depuis ton enfance et surtout les corails qui sont pour moi l'un de mes trains préféré et la micheline ( Train bleu). C'est du gachis de devoir remplacer les corails , la SNCF devraient prendre exemple sur Flixtrain qui eux utilisent des anciens wagons mais qui sont renovées.

    Great video! BB67000 are so nice, I remember great trips in trains hauled by this loco to Les Sables d'Olonne from Paris in 1989 or from Marseille to Clermont-Ferrand in the Cevenol Express. When did they drop 1st class in TER?

      I think they sell them to other companies in other countries ie part of the SNCF obsolete fleet was sold to Morroco's national railways

    5:59 I volunteer at a heritage railway in the UK and we have some Mark 1 compartment coaches of the sort used in that film. I also call them the 'Harry Potter coaches' and will make a point of specifically mentioning them (if they're in service that day) to families when I am on ticket inspector duties.

    It always makes me feel a bit sad: trains (and also planes) witch were once considered luxury class, but are outdated. Seats witch are still comfortabel, but dirty. Beautyful wooden parts with bad paint. Doors that open automatically, but need help sliding. Sanitation without water..... I know things don't last forever, but if you pay a for a First Class ticket, the material should at least look and function first class. Representation!

    Bravo, c'est très nostalgique et j'adore ça !!! On a les corail Marseille-Toulouse encore. Mais je préfère quand même les trains à deux étages, comme celui que tu as fait voir à 7:24. J'aime les trains modernes et rapides !!! Vive la grande vitesse et la modernité !!! De nos jours, on préfère le grand espace, le grand air, l'aération, la respiration, la beauté de l'architecture contemporaine, la beauté de l'avenir. Il faut regarder vers l'avenir, Thibault. Quant aux compartiments, je déteste ça.
