I've had this lens, right at 2 years. It is my FAVORITE lens. Good value, great performance.
It's great value for money.
Pussy
A serious problem in watching your videos is you make it hard for me to save any money. My mom and wife are already colluding to leave me. I am wondering if I should add it to my bucket list. Thanks Dustin.
LOL - I suspect I am not popular among wives and girlfriends the world over ;)
@@DustinAbbottTWI my wife gives me that "look" when I'm viewing videos of lenses red rings.
Fantastic! Well done for getting hold of such an early copy of the lens...I'm v seriously thinking of getting one for my a7r II in order to take pictures of birds in my garden (among other things)
Unless I am mistaken, no Sony mount for this? But if you don't need tracking, Metabones work fine with the Sigma (that I brought after watching your vid!).
Hello Chistopher, i am looking forward for your evaluation as well.
You and Dustin are the only RUclips channels i tend to trust when it comes to photogear! Keep up the good work!
Would like to see a comparison with the Sigma counterpart really.
Oh and get that new FF Canon you need mate, that 6D is really over resolved a lot lately :D
I really wish that Tamron would make an equivalent of the Sigma MC-11 that provided reliably good AF for its lenses (and Video Servo AF). This lens is a seriously good value for money, though.
Michael, unfortunately both Christopher and I have to deal with the reality of expensive camera gear. It's one thing to get loaners to test (that doesn't cost us anything), but quite another to purchase expensive test cameras.
Of course, i do understand that both of you do this, mainly at least, out of passion for photography. Not as a main income resource.
I am just teasing Chirstopher, lately he regularly says in he's videos that he needs to step up from the 20MP 6D :D
Tamron is improving optical performance with every new lens and is now making excellent reasonably priced super zooms. Great review as always Dustin, looking forward to the next installment.
They are building some of the most competitive zooms in the business right now.
I really don't understand it. Your reviews are just so good, you deserve so many more subscribers than you have at the moment. Keep on the good work, I highly appreciate it!
It's getting better. I think that the "sensational" type channels on RUclips tend to grow faster, but I also think their audiences are more fickle.
Dear Dustin,
I will not tell you about your excellent review this time. I just want to tell you, it makes me smile whenever I see there's a new review from you out. Your reviews are complete from every aspect and a pleasure to watch. Thank you for this.
P.S. Just one general comment. I think Tamron is doing its revolution and it's looking pretty good.
They are definitely producing some strong lenses.
It's as though you made a video just for me. You answered all my questions on image quality. I am pleased with your results and look forward to your next video. I have decided to rent the lens for a week to get my own results before buying, but, unless some serious auto-focus and tracking issues crop up in your testing or mine, I'll be buying this lens. Thank you for helping me make this important decision.
That's great!
Dustin, Your usual astoundingly informative review. It pretty amazing. I own the Canon, but I am more and more impressed with what Tamron is doing. I have believed that the Canon 100-400 was just about the sharpest lens out there.
It continues to be an excellent lens (the most complete of its kind), but yes, in some ways the third parties have managed to create pretty competitive lenses at much lower prices.
I really really love how detailed you are. For majority of us, buying a lens like this can be quite a bit of an investment so I really appreciate how well you went over all of the minute technicalities concerning the lens. Keep up the good work!!
Glad to be of service.
Excellent review thanks Dustin, also nice to see you taking the time to reply to most people's comments, much appreciated I'm sure
I suspect it is.
I am very impressed by the Tamrons IQ. For a lens at this price point to go head to head with the Canon and still come out a tie IMHO.. Be hard to not want to get it. Nice video Dustin.
It's pretty shocking how well these much cheaper third party lenses are competing optically.
They made a good trade off: small glass + good VC over big glass. I'd rather have the smaller glass and expose longer with VC because it's obviously cheaper and easier to carry that way. If you look at the diagram on Tamrons website the glass in the barrel is quite small, but who cares if it does a great job. I bet it will suffer when trying to auto-focus in low light though! It's a similar problem with the Canon 50mm 1.8 STM - works great until it gets dark.
I've been waiting for about a month on this video, and once it came out I was in public transit on the way home. I checked the last 5 minutes of your video and skimmed through a few parts on cellular to see what your verdict in terms of image quality was, bought the lens, and then came home and watched the entire video
That's putting it into practice quickly!
Very nice lens! I have had the 150-600 G2 for a few months and am quite impressed with it! But, since I own a 70-200 L version II, I doubt I would have any need for the 100-400, as the 70-200 is superb with both of the version III extenders.
I don't disagree.
Awesome review, thanks !! I have been looking at this lens - it is now my short list!
There have been some amazing prices on the lens recently.
I'll go with the Tamron to save money. . .And for all of the "ever so slightly" differences you mentioned, I will "ever so slightly" adjust for them in post production. . .Easy to do if you're careful and use an "ever so slightly" amount of visual and artistic talent. Nice review!
Sounds like a plan
Once again, I need to thank you for a such a well designed review process, and I am looking forward to the third installment. But it ( the lens) is sure shaping up to be a great performer. Kudos Again Dustin.. I hope your efforts are paying its way, as to taking so much of your time. Its really rewarding to watch as a viewer, and would love to to see your efforts continue and Grow.. Good Luck.. Marty
Thanks, Marty. I don't think that I'm to a place where I'm being fairly compensated for the time investment on this channel, but I also recognize that it takes time to build an audience. My hope is that someday my upfront investment will pay off!
I hope for your sake it does, from what I see you truly deserve it. Just keep an eye on the openeing of Amazon in Australia, so you can hopefully get the sale referrals from there as well. A small market, but hey.. Every bit helps.. Good Luck Dustin! And thanks for taking the time to reply...
Very impressive review. Tamron are really taking it to the OEM lenses for performance. A 100 to 400 zoom isn't easy to get right either, well done Tamron!
That's for sure. This is an impressive effort.
Very impressive results for such a cheap 100-400! I would love to see an E Mount version of this sens some day. It seems 100-400mm lenses of the current generation are all a step above the older designs. I didn't expect the 100-400m mk 2 from Canon to lose it's edge so early.
I'm surprised at how well these lenses do, too. though the Canon is still tops in AF performance and light transmission.
awesome review as always! I'm falling in love of Tamron lenses! For my budget I'll be using APS-C for a while, and I'd really like to see Tamron releasing an update on the 17-50 2.8. We need some crop factor love
I agree on that point. That could be a very good selling lens.
Tamron also needs to update their 180mm and 60mm macros.
What a great lens and great review again Dustin. I think I said this about the sigma version review as well but I'm glad they put these out after they made the 150-600. I love my Sig 150-600 C and if I had one of these I would never had purchased it. I could see owning this as a luxury for wildlife photography and landscapes when I travel so I don't need that big lens and others. Tamron has really stepped up their game and my next purchase will definitely be the Tamron 24-70 G2!
They really have made some huge strides in all-round quality. I actually sold my 150-600 when the Canon 100-400L II came out, but that was as much about form factor as anything.
Thanks for the very detailed review on this lens. I have a question, out of the Tamron 100-400 and the Tamron 70-210 f4, which would you say has better optical performance or is there even a dedicated winner?
I would say the optical performance is more similar than different. The F4 lens will have an aperture advantage throughout, obviously, and more shallow depth of field at maximum aperture at equivalent focal lengths. The 100-400mm has the better focal length for distance shooting, obviously.
Dustin, I really appreciate your reviews. They are extremely well done and your technical knowledge is impressive. I trust and highly respect your opinion. Thank you for doing what you do! Curt from Dewolff Media Group
My pleasure, Curt.
That's how the reviews should be..great job !! After watching your other video about Canon 70-300 mkii i was thinking of buying that and now this review has blown my mind, i think i am leaning towards tammy :)
Reviews should help you be able to make informed decisions for yourself.
Thank you for taking time and doing a thorough review & comparison. Watched your focus tracking video as well. I was using the Tamron 70-200 VC for my kid's outdoor sports, wanted a longer lens for a better reach at soccer events and convinced this is the one, just received one and will try in a couple of says.
Enjoy the lens
Dustin, I did a quick test shot with the 100-400 at 200mm f/5.6 its widest at that zoom, then I put on the Tamron 70-200 VC at 200mm and same settings, I am surprised at the performance on the edges, hard to tell the two apart. And my 70-200 is a sharp lens. Thanks again.
This review is a great bonus for the Thanksgiving day, congrats.
That was my hope
Bought the lens today from Japan, it should arrive next week hopefully..cant wait to play with it :)
Enjoy!
This one has me pretty excited, since I had a change of heart on switching from Canon to Fujifilm systems. After getting a great deal on a refurbed 80D which I really like, and always wanting a full frame, I went against public consensus and bought the new 6D MkII. B&H has a great Black Friday deal which gave me a free vertical grip, battery, SD card, camera case, and photo paper at a savings of almost $700. This 100-400 will be a great lens on either body I believe, so I can't wait for the final results. But, it's still on pre-order status at B&H.
I've never seen such deep discounts so early on a camera body like that. For that price you've got an excellent camera!
Yes I agree. On their website Canon has the 6D Mk II body marked down from $1,999 to $1,699 and includes the $209 vertical grip free, along with 13 months of accident insurance. Then B&H throws in the four goodies worth $180 to top it off. I was going to get the body after the first of the year but couldn't pass this up.
The 80D I got refurbished from Canon for $679.15 as opposed to $1,099 new at the time, and I can't tell that it was ever used at all. Then I ran across a perfect 24-105mm for almost half price on eBay. I have been very lucky lately.
Thanks again Dustin, looking forward to your next video on this lens. Like the comment below about saving any money, I think this might have to go on my wish list.
It's impossible to argue against the value of the Tamron!
Excellent review. Thank you for your work. Appreciate.
My pleasure.
except ur collar ... everything was so perfect in this review like always ...
ur most professional reviewer on the internet ... wish u can compare nikon gear also ... lets help u on patreon
Yes - I noticed the collar, but not until my final pass. I had shot another episode with a sweater on, and pulled it off for a different look on this one...not quite successfully!
Excellent review, will eagerly wait for the AF speed examination. Thanks
I'll be releasing that next week.
Thank you for this outstanding review
My pleasure.
Dustin Abbott is the best gear reviewer in the world.
Well that's kind!
Thanks for including the teleconverter in there.
Even without a direct comparison, did you get a sense for preferring the image quality of the Tamron or Sigma?
Both of them are excellent. I do like that the Tamron has better light transmission, and it definitely has the better autofocus speed for tracking.
Thanks for the breakdown. Want for wildlife at San Diego’s safari park. Thanks for pointing me to more affordable lens than Canon.
It's a great value
Thanks for the great review!
My pleasure!
Thanks for this. I have been waiting since your last review on this lens for a follow up. I shoot wildlife and my go to set up is currently a Nikon 200-400mm on the D500. I have been wanting a little lighter lens in the 100-400 range as a convenient carry around lens. I have been hoping this is the one. I own the Tamron trinity lenses (not the G2 versions), but I have been very happy with them. It looks like this Tammy will be no different. Keep up the good work.
It's definitely going to be a strong player in this segment.
Very detailed review..love all of yours....Waiting for the comparison between 100-400mm lens from sigma and tamron...
I'm afraid that's not in the cards right now.
Odd color cast with the Tamron..? Are the EVs the same at 400mm wide open? Manual white balanced?
The exposure values should be the same...but I also did this review 7 years ago and have reviewed hundreds of items since...so my memory could be faulty ;)
I'm waiting for this review for a long time and finally Dustin brings this for us. And fortunately this lens shows what I was expected for. This will be my upgrade for my much-loved 70-300 VC. Hopefully the VC and focus speed will be as good as the optics.
My question is: Is there any real difference in picture quality, focus speed between Tamron 18-400 and 100-400? Is it worth to buy two lenses (Sigma 24-105 and Tamron 100-400) instead of Tamron 18-400 or spend my money for a prime or fast zoom (e.g. Sigma 18-35/1.8)?
There's a huge difference in image quality between the 18-400 and 100-400...as there should be.
13:00 IN most cases (in my tests) using a lens without TC is always generally going to be sharper, however using the TC with the 70-200 in this case didn't degrade the image too much. I mean the 100-400 is sharper but zoomed out (at viewing distance), it woulid be harder to ditinguish the two.
It helps to have a nicely sharp lens to begin with.
I am curious how this lens performs on an crop sensor. Love to see a comparison between the sigma, tamron and canon on an apsc camera👍
Hi Hans, this is definitely an older lens and video, so I won't be doing any more coverage of it.
Tanks mate . It was usefull
Glad to hear it!
Very informative and detailed as always Dustin, thank you.
Been following and enjoying your reviews for a while now, and i would like to make a request.
The request came up cause you reviewed the Sigma 100-400mm few months back and i am looking in to buying either that or the Tamron for my new D750. I own the 35mm f/1.8 and the 24-70mm f/2.8 G2, and i am very pleased with the latest Tamron creations in all aspects.
Was waiting anxiously for the 100-400m and hoped it was going to be just as good but without the known issues Sigma lenses have with Autofocus and Tracking.
The AF part you will cover shortly, i know, but regarding the image quality between the two, how are we going to compare them since you don't have the Sigma at hand any more?
And getting to the point, i'd like to see some(1-2 maybe?) consistent photos taken with each lens you review.
So we can go back to each video, 1 or 2 years later maybe, and have a rough idea of how the lenses compare to each other.
Hello and thank you very much for this great test and the big work, that you have put in this. :)
Now i'm sure, the Tamron 100-400 is good enough to work with the EOS 5DsR. A lens for that i have searched to make landscape photos.
Greetings and always good light from Bavaria/Germany.
Stefan
Thank you, Stefan!
Were the images shot on a crop sensor camera if not what would the difference be . Or would the crop sensor lose some quality.
This was shot on full frame. The answer to your question really depends on the resolution of the APS-C camera. They often have higher pixel density, but that isn't a guarantee.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I use the Canon 77 D. Money is always an issue I'm on a fixed income so my choices kind of limited I was hoping the sharpness would equal cannons 55 to 250 lens which I have
I would say that you should get at least equal sharpness to the 55-250
I swear I did read "image quality extermination" in the tittle... LOL
LOL - that wouldn’t be good!
Great review Dustin. Wanted to bring this lens back up into discussion now it's been a couple years later and you feel it does on APS-C like my 80d verse other long telephotos. I have a 55-250 stm now which is generally regarded as being very sharp, so would this be an improvement of any kind or would it be more for a reach standpoint? Thank you! A small small improvement would still be considered worthy to me to upgrade if it meant longer reach and even better IQ /sharpness
It would be an upgrade, yes, as it will give you solid performance and obviously much more reach.
Tamron did a good job with this lens. I wonder if it’s as good as the Nikon 80-400.
Optically I suspect it is better, though I don't shoot Nikon and am just going off the feedback I've had from others.
Great review as always, thank you dustin!
I am considering of buying it to my 7D mark ii. please do a brief examination on your 70D.
I took it out on a 80D today.
Dustin Abbott, you are truly the best 😊
I've added a gallery with some shots here: bit.ly/100400vcIG. It was a pretty ugly day around here, but you can get an idea of what the lens can do.
Thanks!!!
I would still love to here your thoughts on the difference in performance between crop an ff in a future video. I am probably not the only one that want this lens for crop sensor camera :)
Great review Dustin! I am interested in C-AF performance for my Nikon D500. You were not impressed with Sigma 100-400 with C-AF performance, so is this Tamron better than Sigma for C-AF? Can I use for sport shooting at 10FPS?
Watch for the new video released today.
Sad it doesn't come with the tripod stand
That's fair.
Well, guess I know what my next lens is!
It's a great "bang for the buck" lens.
What to pick between Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD Lens or Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary Lens.
Right now i have D7200 but soon will upgrade to D750.
I like the Tamron better because I had much better focus speed with it.
Hello Dustin, thank you very much for the review and the quality comparison to the canon lens. I would be very interested in knowing how this lens performs with an EOS M5. I don't need super fast AF, but if AF would be very unreliable it will be a dealbreaker.
Unfortunately I don't have that camera on hand to test.
Anyway thanks for your reply. I found someone at canonrumors forum I could ask. Just ordered my copy of this lens.
Aweome video! I would also love to see a detailed teleconverter comparison. Native Canon vs Sigma Vs Tamron. Would be nice to have a reference on how much IQ degrades exactly if you put one on. Would mean a lot for those of us who really can`t gamble on buying something and then not like it :)
I did a pretty extensive TC comparison like you asked back earlier in the year. I recommend that you take a look at that, as I don't have time or inclination to do a fresh one now.
Hi Dustin thanks for your exhaustive review on this lens. Did you calibrated this lens with the Tap-in console? I just got a Nikon copy for my D500 and some pictures doesn't look as sharp as I expected, is it common on new Tamron lenses? ù
Thanks for your attention
Greg
I did calibrate it, though it didn't need much in my combination. Put the lens on a tripod and use Live View focus and see if the sharpness is what you expected. If it is, then you have a focus issue. If it still doesn't satisfy you, then the lens isn't going to be as sharp as your expectations.
Dustin Abbott thanks for your attention
Great review, I would not buy any gear without checking your say.
No pressure or anything :)
The Canon lens seems a bit warmer?
I'd have to really look at them side by side again before stating that definitively.
For landscape photography, would you recommend the 100-400 or the 70-210 f4? Which has better IQ at 200mm?
John, at landscape apertures you would be hard-pressed to tell a difference. Buy for what your priority is: do you want the wider aperture and wider focal length, or do you want the longer focal range? They are both plenty sharp for your application.
Does it perform as good on APSC? Would be a definite buy then!
I'll comment more on that in a later episode, but I did just add an APS-C gallery to my galleries: bit.ly/100400vcIG
Dustin Abbott I will look into that, thanks!
I’m very curious about its autofocus performance...
Keep watching. I'll cover that next week.
Did you needed to do a firmware update for this lens or on your camera for the lens to work?
I didn’t, but your camera model may be different. Purchasing the Tap In console is a good idea because you can do firmware updates at home
Hi again Dustin, which one would you go for if image quality is the main factor, Tamron or Sigma? Many Thanks
I honestly don't think there is a real winner. There's give and take with both. I don't think you can lose either way.
Dustin Abbott thanks, after seeing your review for both I was under the impression that you preferred Sigma for image quality and Tamron for AF speed, is that accurate enough?
Not necessarily. I felt the Tamron was equally sharp in most scenarios.
Hi Dustin
I almost bought the sigma 100-400 and I saw your review and other review and most of them complaining about Speed. So I did not buy it.
How is the tamron in that regard especially with fast moving objects like birds
Watch later this week when I break that down in detail.
Dustin, please review the new Canon 85mm 1.4 IS
It's one the way.
Hey Dustin! Thanks for this great review! I've decided I'd like to replace my 70-200 with a 100-400 because that focal length seems to fit my style much better. How would this lens compare in image quality to the Tamron 70-200 di vc usd g2? Any idea why the 70-200 is more expensive?
The 70-200 G2 is more expensive because it is an F2.8 lens (more expensive to engineer) and has a higher grade of build quality.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks for that! You think image quality would remain about the same?
The G2 is sharper over the equivalent range at equivalent apertures.
Hi Dustin! Would this Tamron be suitable for fast action/Sports ? And Portraits?
You can watch my upcoming AF segment (next week) and make that call for yourself.
Basically the best budget wildlife walk-around lens?
That's a pretty safe assumption, I would say.
Did it seem like the Canon 100-400 had a wider field of view @100mm than the Tamron?
At first I thought that, too, but when I checked the frames all around, it seemed like they were roughly similar.
Dustin which lens do you advise : Sigma 100-400mm or the Tamron 100-400mm on a Canon 80D Thnx, greetings from The Netherlands.
The Tamron focuses better, in my experience, but they are both sharp.
Thanks a lot Dustin. I was just going to ask you about this question. But how about in the dim environment, just like in the concert or sunset with a close-up shot. Do you think 'tamron 70-200 f2.8 g2' is better or tamron 100-400 can handle it? Sincerely from Taiwan.
Lenses with faster apertures focus better in low light conditions, but I did find the 100-400 did okay. You will have to crank the ISO, though.
Thank you very much.
Appreciate you too, Dustin.
Dustin, how you will compare this with 150-600 G2 in terms of IQ (Keeping the extra reach out of the comparison)... Which is better in your opinion..
I do think the Sigma Sport version has a bit of an optical edge, but it is also really, really heavy.
But my question is about compared to G2 150-600 Tamron.
Sorry. The 150-600 G2 is still very strong at 400mm. I suspect that they are roughly similar, but I haven't compared them side by side. I have compared to the Canon, however, and the 150-600 G2 was very close at 400mm
Taaaanks alllottt, you are nailing my issues about these lenses ( 100-400)s
I'm waiting for auto focus review and tracking, as you said i need it for that.
And one request , if its possible , compare these (100-400), canon, sigma , tamron, with canon 400 f5.6 prime (yes i know not the same class , but i'm just need auto focus compare )
You are best, tank you again.
I'm afraid my comparisons will be limited to what I have on hand at the time.
Sure, i understand , tank you for your respond
Between this lens and the Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary Lens, who's the winner?
The Tamron, I would say, because of the superior autofocus performance.
Thanks for answering.
Dustin Abbott to my eyes the microcontrast and colour rendition looks much better on the Canon, the blacks look hazy and blue on the Tamron.
I do think the Canon has the ultimate edge, yes, but since it costs 2 1/2 times more...
Dustin Abbott I agree, but question is "why is it cheaper, what's it made of, how long will it last, what will the resell value be like....?"
I cover the build in the first look episode. That answers the first question, and no one can answer your latter questions.
Dustin Abbott exterior build quality is one thing, but unless a lens is dismantled entirely, it's hard to tell. A good example was the first version Tamron 24-70, the insides were junk. Anyway, thanks for the great review.
Nice review. Will the old Canon 400mm f/5.6 sharpness still out perform this lens at 400mm? I wonder the new technology of Tamron may have caught up. Like the idea of VC technology and price. Looking at the two lenses closely for purchase in the future.
I think the Canon still does very well and is sharper, though by a small margin. Real world results will probably favor the Tamron due to the VC, though.
the AF 70-300 was the best they made
This lens is optically much better than the 70-300, though I do really like that lens. This lens also has much better autofocus, better build, and works much nicer mechanically.
Now if only it was available in an FE mount.
No kidding!
why dont u do such comparisons with nikon lenses
Taser Face He shoots Canon, so those are the cameras he has available to test.
It's mostly about time. I don't shoot Nikon, and I don't have time to add another system. That being said, I am in the process of reviewing the D850 thanks to a viewer.
These photo's are both Tamrons. You're not showing a real comparsion.
I think the biggest disadvantage of the tamron is the F 6.3 at 400 mm.
This means that when using a 1,4 converter there will be no autofokus at 400 mm (560mm).....
I wouldn't say that there is no autofocus (that will depend on the camera body), but I wouldn't expect brilliant AF performance.
Dustin Abbott Yeah thats what I mean.
Right now I am testing my 6DII with the Canon 100-400 and the 1.4 converter and the autofocus works really well for sports and wildlife with the remaining 15 autofocus points.
I dont think that this would be possible with the Tamron lens.
It will be possible with the Tamron 1.4x on your 6DII I haven't tested how good it will be, though.
Dustin Abbott Beyond F8 only the center point will autofocus I think.
A major downside compared with the Canon lens.
Thank you for your reviews Dustin! It's really awesome to listen to (and learn from) your English, which reminds me a lot of the kind of English that my North American teacher speaks and has taught me to speak, as well. Regarding the Tamron 100-400 lens, could you take a look at these charts here: bit.ly/2lZzH1A The lab test indicates that the Tamron is incredibly, intolerably soft, yet your review proves the opposite. In the same lab, the Sigma is indeed as sharp or even sharper than the Canon, which your testing confirms. What do you think about it, could it be that they have a faulty sample over at the digital picture? I like the Tamron and would really like to buy one, but the test result scares me, to be honest.
wow. that's scary.
That's very odd, and I can't account for their results. The feedback from buyers has been much more similar to my own experience.
I just wish your reviews wouldn't be so cursory and superficial. Just kidding, lol. As always, spot on.
LOL
Dustin, if your wife caught you cheating and you had to change the subject fast to take the heat off you, what would you tell her?
Tamron's pricing really, really varies from market to market.
its a rip off who cares about 100mm i can recover that in a crop
Wow - that's a unique perspective. I think most people would find issue with your argument, however. Why not just shoot a great 50mm lens and crop even more :)
Enthe kope anne parayunne..
Thanks for giving me another reason to avoid Canon!
Oh my! Not really my intention, but the Tamron definitely makes for an appealing performance to value option.
Thanks for the great review!
You're welcome!
