    I used to have an 83 2WD Toyota pickup with the 22 RE engine. I drove it until the box was literally falling apart. I gave it to my buddy who has a farm over 20 years ago and he replaced the truck bed with a flat deck. He still uses it as one of his farm trucks today.

    End of small trucks is simple. EPA sets standards based on footprint size of vehicle. Smaller trucks would be required to get insanely high MPGs (40+) and it's just not feasible. Making the trucks footprint bigger allows them to get Lower mpg.

      I came here to say this. You say that the electronics drive up costs but this is simply not true it's a combination of how cafe is calculated and the class shifts work between what is considered passenger and work. Next there were weight requirements iirc of at least 5000lbs or about 2400kg to allow work vehicle tax right offs and this is when company cars shifted from sedans to SUV's. With that a series of "corrective" measures continued to further break things until we get where we are today. My old 1981 Datsun 720 fully loaded with a tarp covering the bed could get 22+ MPG on the highway, honestly with proper hybrid systems a compact work truck could totally meet the standards but it would be closer in cost to the larger trucks. Personally I think they should classify it based on rated capacity if you're truck is built for 500kg bed weight with a proper additional capacity for passengers and gear it should be in a slightly lower class than if it's closer to 1,000kg or something but not based it on size of vehicle

    You were on at the end only thing you missed/got wrong is not that Americans need touch screens etc. (in fact, many complain they can't get a vehicle without one) look at what the EPA calls the CAFE standards. These are rules that must be met. America can't have smaller trucks because the wheelbase would be shorter than its larger counterparts and thus required to get greater fuel economy. For example. A 2002 Honda Civic is tiny compared to its 2024 Counterpart. The reason is because according to the EPA a 7th gen Honda with a WB of 116" must get 87mpg. However, if that same Civic has a wheelbase of 124" then it can suck gas and haul ass at 32MPG. And yes, the requirements are that bad. Someone ran the numbers and to have a Toyota pickup with a 22R like they made in the mid 80s the truck would have to get 74 MPG to be allowed for sale in the US. So, the moral of the story is the EPA is humping us and we didn't elect the EPA, yet they are making laws that govern what you and I buy? This is America, we tell the EPA what to do. Elect Trump so he can gut the EPA.

      @@LukesCarTalk He has it right. The demand for light trucks hasn't gone away. They literally *CAN'T* come back to the US market. The EPA has effectively banned them.
      The weekend DIY guy is as common today as ever and I guarantee that if they don't have truck, they would love to get their hands on an affordable light truck. You can see this in the market for used light trucks. The prices are kinda crazy.

    I have owned 7 small pickups, starting with a 2 year old 1977 Datsun 620 in 1979. I now Have a 1993 Chevy S-10. All of these trucks have been standard cab (meaning the bench seats were up against the rear window) real pickups, all 2 wheel drive, 5 of them had manual transmissions, 4 long beds and 3 short beds. I bought the '93 S-10 new 31 years ago, and will keep it for the rest of my life. I have spare engines, transmissions, body parts, and lots of other parts to keep it going. It is a 2.8L 5 speed 2 wheel drive short bed.

    How can someone drop $70K on a truck and then use it for work or off-roading unless they can write it off as a business expense? Most work trucks are still at lower trims levels anyway. The rest are aspirational vehicles which will never haul much or go off road.

    • @markadler8968
      @markadler8968 3 месяца назад +2

      Even as a business expense it is getting very hard to justify the cost of a new truck. I have always leased new F-350s every 4 years for my business. Now they want about $130,000 CDN plus taxes for the model I want and the lease payments are about $2200 CDN a month. When you add in the cost of fuel, insurance and maintenance it is well over $3000 CDN a month. My mortgage isn't even that expensive so for the first time in over 25 years I am keeping my paid off truck and will maintain it.

    It is crazy how big they have gotten. I currently drive a midsize truck which suits my needs (Dodge Dakota), but if I ever had to replace it, current mid sized trucks seem so overly large now, it doesn't seem like it's going to be as good of a time driving it or be as easy to use. I drove a 90s Chevy 2500, it seemed smaller than an new 1500 with it being a larger class vehicle. I know another one of the reasons for bigger vehicles is to allow them to squeeze in under the EPA's mandates, but it does get annoying.

      @LukesCarTalk  3 месяца назад +1

      I’m glad you also feel this way. I can’t emphasize this enough. I own a Chevy s10 so a bit of bias but I have used this truck for my yard work than anyone owner of a new big and expensive truck ever will. It’s sad that Americans can’t even get a purpose built vehicle anymore for cheap

    • @mrboojay
      @mrboojay 3 месяца назад +1

      @@LukesCarTalk oh yeah, it is, I’d wouldn’t mind some of the newer trucks, if they were smaller and cheaper with less fluff that really isn’t needed. Ford’s cheapest new gen F-150 I believe starts at $50k, a $50k work spec truck. And it has expensive tail lights and headlights, which are my biggest worry, if you accidentally break those, those are expensive to replace. Now don’t get me wrong, new trucks very much do things, I’ve seen GMC Sierra 3500 Denalis put in the work, some people do buy luxury trucks and put them to use, but man they are expensive and you do feel the need to keep them nice.

    With the exception of high performance and sports cars this era of the car mark is just boring stuff to pick from with almost everything being big SUV's. The era of the 90's to early 2000's was so much better with more verity of cars to pick from. Also ever since the death of the Australian car industry back around 2016 there are no light weight utility vehicles to pick from anymore. The great thing about the Aussie Utes were because they were built muscle car recipe from the sedan models you could use them as a work vehicle during the week and then on the week end you could just take them out for a drive on the weekend and just enjoy driving them. Miss the days when Australia made cars.

      @@LukesCarTalk Indeed, besides my VE Ute being front heavy from not having much weight on the rear end it still feels pretty sharp around corners pretty well more like what you would expect from coupe. One thing the Commodore Utes had of the Falcon Ute models was rear independent suspension but the disadvantage of that was that they have a lower towing compacity to the Falcon Ute. Though the falcons do have have one of the greatest Australian performance engines ever made, the Bara engine which is a 4L straight 6. The XR6 Turbo models are about as fast as the V8.
