I have a petrol E90 and I can say that the F30 320d feels great to drive. Being as fast as my old E46 330i, the 320d is fast enough for me. The handling is so solid, the torque is amazing, and the gearbox is amazing. The 320d feels so much more capable than my 320i. Strangely, some aspects of the build quality seem a little bit worse, as is the stereo. Also, although it is a bit more modern, I don't think it looks much better than the E90. The 320d doesn't sound nice, whereas the 330d sounds great.
Bob Bobby no way is the 320D as fast or as smooth as a E46 330I, you just told a massive porkie. I've driven the 320D and whilst it's OK, there is a serious lack of power and turbo lag on that engine. It can't compare to the 3.0 231bhp straight six in the E46 330i. That engine had torque low down almost everywhere and serious power up the rev range.
I didn't say it was as smooth - far from it - but it was much torquier, so around town, it was just as fast. Note that my old 330i had done 220,000kms and the 320d I tested had probably done less than 50,000km. Just to clarify "The 320d feels so much more capable than my 320i" - I am referring to my current E90 320i, not my old E46 330i.
Bob Bobby either way 320D is nowhere near as good as the 3 litre straight six petrol unit in the 330I Only thing the 320D has going for it is fuel consumption, performance is inferior, sounds rough, doesn't run anywhere near as smooth, has big turbo lag, Not exactly a drivers car.

Only yesterday I was behind a 2009 M3 and ok he wasn't exactly flooring it, but he was very shocked when we spoke, to realise my car was only a 2.0 diesel. As for turbo lag, you didn't have it in sport mode because I've never suffered turbo lag, unless I'm in too low of a gear, I.e trying to pull at 20mph in third, then yes, you'll see about 1 second of lag.
