In tender, loving memory of Mrs. Norah Lee Allen who for many years sang backup vocals for the Grand Ole Opry and many country artists. She began singing background vocals with the Carol Lee Cooper Singers. Norah took the helm after Carol Lee retired in 2012. She was the wife of Duane Allen lead singer of The Oak Ridge Boys. They were married for fifty four years and had two children and four grandchildren. Mrs. Allen joined Heaven’s choir on March 31st,2024 at the age of 76. She is survived by her husband Duane and her daughter Jamie (Paul) Martin of Hendersonville, Tennessee and her son Dee of Nashville, Tennessee. Her four grandchildren March,Kell,Texas, and Tallant Martin all of Hendersonville. She is also survived by her brother in law George Sells and her sister in law Martha Shannon and her nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, sisters Lana Miller and Sandra Sells, her brother in law Maurice Miller, her infant daughter Julie Anna, and her infant great nephews Reid and Randon Miller. She will be greatly missed by many. Another family member who has joined the Unbroken Circle.
I have a picture of playing/singing with Janie when we were in early high school. I wish that I had her contact information so I could send it to her. We both would later end up at Indiana University where she quickly immersed herself into her music career.
Good to see Janie doing well. Always one of my favorites. She used to come up to the Hodag festival and always put on a great show. Sounds really good and pretty as a picture. Burlington Bill busking on You Tube and on the road!
My Uncle had a very popular Booking Agency in the 70’s and Janie was on his roster. And she was (IS) just a delight. And I can remember so many songs growing up where her signature vocal technique would just captivate me and I couldn’t wait to hear the song again. And I love this up tempo version of this song. Well Janaa. Also, this episode CFR of the Ray Price songs was done so well. I LOVE that they did it with his GORGEOUS WIFE. She was always a sweetheart and Ray ADORED HER, he spoke so sweetly of her. And listen, everyone’s heard the stories of big stars, behind the scenes of their shows hitting on women and “hooking up” with everything that moved. Well, that WAS NEVER MR Ray Price. I was a Christian and I didn’t fancy that kind of thing so I’d go somewhere and read a book or just sit and play my guitar. And all of a sudden, you’d look up and Ray would be in a corner reading the paper, or just sitting there listening to YOU. That was kind of cool. But He was such a class act! What a true talent and just a kind man.
Such a deep song that crushes ones gut for sure. When Engelbert sings this on his CD l by place it.....because the D word hit me....and not by choice......but l listened to this lady sing it and it was a different meaning for me hearing a females voice on this tune.....

Absolutely love this Queen of Country. Even as a back-up singer, she sounds so angelic. She is so gracious and humble even as a SuperStar.

My favorite song of hers was “ThenFirst Word in Memory is Me.”
