Cool progress on the Pinto. In the 1990s we had a 77 Pinto. We call it the "Incredible Flying Pinto". Had the C3 automatic slush box trans like the model. 2.3l SOHC engine. It got its name because we were headed out to visit family a couple days after Christmas. The wife riding shotgun. Our nearly 2 year old son in his carseat in back and me at the wheel. Casseroles on the back floor covered with foil. We live in a small town in the California Desert and headed to LA. Near our town there are some farms. Grow onions and carrots. So I'm cruising along and the beat up 80s Toyota Corolla in front of us turns on their indicator to turn left onto a farm road and hits the brakes. So I go to step on my brakes and my shoe catches the made for a Galaxie massive brake pedal as I lift my foot. Breaks the clip that retail the brake pedal to the master cylinder and the pedal flips up toward the dash. It then comes down on top of my foot and tangles in my shoelace. So to avoid the other car, I turn right just as the other driver did too because he saw us coming fast. So we scraped along the side of their car which headed me straight toward a 2' high tractor-made berm around the edge of the field. Hit that creating an explosion of dirt and the car launched airborne. Landed on the nose in the plowed field. Nobody hurt. The folks in the Toyota were very understanding but were wondering why I didn't get out of my car right away and thought we were hurt. I was just untangling the fool brake pedal. So they took me home to get my pickup and car trailer. My neighbor came along to help. Called from the house for a friend to pick up my wife and son. I had a 100' contractor's tape measure in the pickup and my neighbor said we should measure how far it flew. 105' from the berm to the beginning of the landing divot. Yeeehaw! 2 years later the next door neighbor gave me a 76 Pinto he was going to build a ministock out of. He had taken the engine and trans out and dismantled the engine. Bought all sorts of hop up parts for the engine according to the local rules. Stock body shell floor and chassis. Stock suspension pieces, springs and shocks could be upgraded. Stock 13" diameter wheels with +1" rim width and DOT tires. Bought a welder and a chop saw for building the cage. Was shopping for a tube bender for that too. But then at the last event of one season of racing they announced the rules for the next season. Full tube frame. Fiberglass bodies. Serious engine modifications. Upgraded rear axle. 8" x 15" wheels and race tires. So he gave up on it.
