App looks great! Have two questions. 1. Does the phone app have to be open for the entirety of a ride in order to track HR? 2. Is the standard workout feature able to be ran concurrently while using the app (for example participating in a TRI and want to track the entire event)
Thanks! 1. No. The app can be in the background during the ride. 2. No. The Apple Watch only allows one workout be active at once. As both the HRM app and the Apple Fitness (and other workout apps) use this feature, only one can be active at a time. I hope this helps and happy cycling! :)
@@dominikmagliaSo the phone has to be paired with the Edge during the activity. Useless. Would be better if Apple and Garmin worked together so Apple Watch could broadcast its HR directly to the Edge
@@dominikmaglia Regarding question 1. What can I do as if I close (not terminate) the app and open for example a different app, for example podcasts, or i decide to lock the sceen the connection with apple watch hrm app is lost ?
You can only have one workout active on the Watch at a time (I'm not sure if you mean this by iPhone). But anyway, if you're tracking your workout through Apple Fitness, then there's no need to track it via the Garmin anyway.
My Garmin 830 is connected via Echo / hrm heart rate monitor but but it does not display on the garmin workout screen or even if I create a custom screen? Any ideas?
Unfortunately, it doesn't work between my apple watch ultra and Garmin 540.... sometimes it doesn't find the sensor while other times, while detecting it, it doesn't connect it.
It worked at first with 1040 Edge Solar, how ever it lost the connection mid ride. After that I am unable to reconnect it. Tried deleting the sensor and redoing the steps but does not work.
Worked for me on my 540 although I had to keep the phone connection enabled on the garmin and just had to make sure that the Connect app on the phone was closed all the way. Thank you!
thank you for trying to give a solution to something are all looking for. we all want an apple watch to pair with our cycling computer just like a strap on HR monitor. We can see there are issues with compatibility right now. Please do not get discouraged and keep working on this solution. While it does not look like it's ready to me, I will keep following for the future! Thank you!
This is an issue between Garmin Connect and Strava. I found these fixes: www.reddit.com/r/Strava/comments/wteq7o/heart_rate_missing_in_strava_from_garmin/
Doesn’t seem to work for me.. I have it on my phone and watch but when I use garmin 540 to search for device there’s nothing there. I’ve also disabled phone connection
Usually not, but it can happen that the connection is lost/inactive. If the Garmin loses the sensor connection, the procedure is described here: dominikmaglia.com/hrm-app-user-guide/#how-to-connect-your-bike-computer
Its not connecting religiously on my garmin 540 from my iphone 14 pro. I tried all the troubleshooting steps that is indicated on the app but nothing worked. Currently, it cant detect anymore. :(
i am getting a message on the phone that says 'allow permission to read heart rate data from health' - as far as i can tell, I have done this. I've tried restarting both phone and watch, no change. i have iphone 13, apple watch 8, garmin edge 540
Have you tried checking permissions via Settings (on your Watch) > Health > Apps > HRM? If so, any chance you've restricted Health access in another privacy or Focus setting?
I’m using an alternative app called HeartCast, which works fine as well. Required the phone to be disconnected from my GPS as well (non-Garmin at the time), which would be a bit annoying as the GPS used to have auto-upload activity through the phone that would not work with the heart rate. I would just run the HeartCast app on my watch and not show it on the device (not perfect) - it would log the data and it would be saved in the ride.
As far as I know it‘s only using the phone connection for notifications during the ride. Before and after for syncing routes and activities, but this can easily be switched.

Any chance the Garmin Connect app is still running in the background on your iPhone? If so, you must terminate it completely, open the HRM app, and only then start the Edge 540. That's usually the #1 issue in case it doesn't work.
I already heard of quite a few users on the Edge Explore 2. If yours doesn't work, I assume that the Garmin Connect app is still running in the background on your iPhone, taking up the single BLE spot available. If that's the case, you must close it like so: support.apple.com/en-us/HT201330
I’ve just back from my first 100k ride using this app, and now I impressed even more. For more than 4hrs it was running in background and had zero issues!! Would you consider adding battery status on the watch app? And maybe one time purchase instead of subscription?
I'm sad it doesn't work with my Edge 530 (bought a few days ago as they are cheap now the 540 is out!) Thanks for your time with this, I'm sure others will benefit from your work!
Dammit!!! same here. I bought that useless heartbeatz device. Honestly it works when it works well. The issue is it has no on/off switch so it burns through batteries and is expensive to ship outside of USA. I have given up on the device and on any Apple Watch in the future. sadly Fitbits have the same issue... maybe Garmin is the culprit?
Can I connect back the phone after I connect the heart sensor, in order to receive notifications and control musics?
Can it be connected using Edge 530?

Good work! Did you think about using de acccelerometer of the iPhone or watch to estimate cadence?

How can I connect/use this great app on my garmin edge 520?
hi dominik
Hi Jan
Dazu einfach die gleiche Prozedur in umgekehrt. Also zuerst HRM App komplett schliessen, Edge aus, Garmin Connect app auf, Edge an.
So the other connected features between the phone and the edge need to be turned off the entire time to be able to use this feature?
I'm not sure if it would still work otherwise, but I assume this is true, yes.

No, this won‘t work as the Apple Watch does not allow direct connections. Hence, the iPhone is used as an intermediary.

Title : No Extra Hardware Required! Vid. Take your iPhone and go to the app store... thumbs down dude.
.
what about the direct connection from the watch to Garmin, without the phone? Also possible?
Unfortunately not. The Apple Watch doesn't allow to connect as a so-called Bluetooth Peripheral to other devices so it needs the iPhone to do that.
The Apple Watch Peloton heart rate app can talk directly to a Peloton bike without needing an iPhone. I wonder how they pulled that off…..
