Im a 40 year old man. Never married and never planning on having children.why? If i can barely support myself, what would happen if i need to support a wife AND child?
Not enough talk here about how the ultra rich have decided that the basics for the masses should be out of reach. Everything from healthy food, decent accommodations(rent & home ownership), daycare, health insurance, college education keeps increasing. However wages don't.

It has been made too expensive to have a family. People are no longer walking blindly into the sun by just having children with no means to support them.
yep and has to do with computer revolution. As countries develop the rural population shrinks to very small number and majority live in cities. Now add automation in mix and got lower number of middle class jobs. Since companies like manufacturing plant where land is cheap is mechanism for keeping the population form being hyper concentrated in mega cities. With automation there less people working in manufacturing. So now population is hyper urbanized. So birth rates drop and will not stabilized until the population is once again 50 percent rural. In the country people can be self sufficient and afford to have more kids. In the city people must rely on labor market and can not be self sufficient. that another thing automation that requires high unit per hour to justify its cost. So the smaller the population the less units per hour need the less automation the bigger the middle class.
Why would you bring a child into the world when you know that all they will be are slaves to make money for someone else .

The lesser people in work force lesser goods we can produce leads to an infaltion in prices and cost of living. The wealth of an nation is measured in the amount of young workforce and their education and what kind of jobs they eventually end up doing. We are all failing in all that aspects. I have seen people claim on RUclips that the lesser population the much richer we will become, that's completely wrong, disruptions in food chain will become more frequent and severe, the abundance we have is due to population we have now, how can we presume our standard of living will stay the same.

A child is two dependents: the child itself and the adult who must supervise it. Looking after an aging population is just a case of looking after the elderly instead of babies and their mothers.

As a family member remarked: 'it seems like human beings walk backwards into the future'. I broadly agree. Its possible to look at certain key issues far off in our individual lives, like retirement, paying off the mortgage, wedding anniversaries, a long desired trip overseas, making a last will and testament, etc. However, in general people are hopeless at thinking and planning for the future.
And some things are truly merciless. For example, the phenomenon of women putting off having kids and finding the right partner, and then running out of time, or having trouble getting pregnant, etc. They essentially run out of time before they are even cognizant that it has occurred.

I've never been able to get worried about population changing. I was aware and unconcerned for the first 50 years of population growth, and now with population decline I'm just not worried about it. We'll adjust.

The issue is there isn’t one single point in recorded history where we as a species have operated under that system. There has never once been a country or population that dipped below replacement level and recovered their population.

It's actually the BIGGEST problem, if we DON'T see a population drop. It effects everything. Resource distribution, pollution, education, civil rights... We don't even need to hope for a lower population, we just need it to sustain and stop expanding for a few decades.
@@MrNote-lz7lh It is good that you mention them because in the modern world they are the only group - along with the Haredims and some menonite groups - with a pre-modern birth rate, I.e 7 children per woman. Why? Because they reject the main cause of the decline in the birth rate, i.e. technology and the comfort it brings. No birth policy can work, except to go to a level of authoritarianism that is probably impossible to induce. (That said, maybe cloning, artificial wombs are a possible future solution).
"What does it actually matter"? Well, our current living standard will be a thing of the past and it will not return any time soon.

While fertility is down, do we consider all the people who don't want to have kids due to economic reasons. People who have a brain, dont want to bring children in this world when they can hardly put a roof over their own head. Part of this is a class issue, not just a fertility issue.

Western countries developed systems and processes based on permanent population increases. Especially regarding State Pension schemes.
But the percentage of workers to retirees has been falling for a few decades now, and will inevitably collapse. So immigration has been their target, but have NOT admitted this to their electorates!
But even that is a limited and short-term solution, because there is ZERO possibility that the public will allow the level of immigration needed, at the expense of national, cultural and social values! Never!
So I would invest my money into Robotics companies, because that is the only way production levels can be maintained or increased in the future!

The dependency ratio is higher in young populations. In the 1960s, my father supported himself and 5 other people, and 3 of us went on to tertiary education.
If a working couple supports themselves, two children and 4 parents we are looking at a ratio of 2:8, OR 1:4. This is surely more doable than the 1:6 burden that my father carried.
You can't do that today ,that's the point Chris ,when the pension system was setup there was 7 paying in for 1 taking out ,now only 3, The real problem is the "money" isn't honest and doesn't store value being fiat.... Your savings in the bank ,for starters since 2016 you are now an unsecured creditor and also the purchasing power is being hugely eroded year after year and accelerating...Takes 2 salaries to survive with mortgage,food,heat,travel, who's looking after the kids ? More work for those remaining. Division of labour principles suggests that fewer people will mean larger workloads for workers. However, this may incentivize them to demand higher pay or leave jobs that do not pay well since a shrinking workforce will make workers difficult to replace - a company without employees will lose its stock value. Of course, we also need to factor in AI and automation.
I think at first it'll be nice, less people on the crowded highways and subways, but in an additional 50 years when everyone is old it'll be lonely and desolate. There'll be less cultural progress and more depression. Even if people wanted to have kids, well they'll be too old to conceive, unless we become okay with the idea of growing babies in labs.
We need to address the cost of living crisis and have policies in place that allow people who want to have kids have the desired amount of them they want. 1 instead of 0, 2 instead of 1 etc.
In the long term, it will be ok. Real estate will get cheaper, pressure on Nature will lessen a bit and having more kids will be incentified more. But short term, it will hit us economically.

All very consistent with my experiences. I fathered three children (my wife did most of the work) but my brother and sister had none. All three kids are now in their 30s and have effectively replaced their grandparents and will replace us two. But out of my 3 kids, only one has a child. The others are too busy funding mortgages. The financial side in Oz needs looking at. Talk about eggshells! Now I'm going to hide...

@@rujotheoneI guess governments will have to increase corporate taxes to fund care for the elderly since increasing income tax or any other tax that affects workers will only cause the workers to collectively demand higher wages in proportion to the cost of living crisis and eat into corporate profits. It will also be the death of cheap labour.
The nuanced take is there are pros and cons like in everything, there are both direct reasons for this done likely on purpose, potentially malevolent in nature, but there are many unforseen and unorganized reasons that this phenomena has taken place/is/will continue.
Urbanization, solipsism, both seemingly healthy women's rights and militant feminism as its own ideology, environmental consequences of consumption, discontentment, hopelessness, hedonistic self indulgence, naturally changing and manufactured cultural belief changes, tons of reasons.
It will have a huge impact and change the course of people's usual lives, overall the biggest living in a world of peak population and likely peak economic growth to a situation of statis and then decline in population, age distribution, and economy growth. It will effect everything and the issues can't be fully planned for in advance I think. Don't forget the impact it will have on immigration, mass immigration and the drama associated with that too.
There is also the chance that hopelessness and worry for the future will cause even less people to decide to have children (and of course fewer if they do) and it creates a death spiral, aka the low fertility trap.

Some rich people are preppers and do it other way, but goal is same, how to secure food in future. It makes having a productive relationship with the struggling parts of the world challenging. The worst one at the moment is obviously the Eurasia region of the world. And then theres Africa, where so many people are stuck in a slow moving train wreck. There are daunting practical problems in Africa in particular, where one of the key diversities is the diversity of different pathogens that are killing human beings and threatening to get out and infect /reinfect the world.
Human flourishing requires two things right now: (1) defeat the woke, and (2) break the stranglehold of the diseases. Things like climate crisis, gender diversity, non-binaryism, etc, thats delusional compared to these 2 main issues.
For example, tuberculosis is by far the worst infectious disease that humanity faces. It is killing approximately a million people every year.
Most people are disconnected from reality to some degree. And so their priorities are wrong.
There is more to human society than economic growth.
Our social Systems are totally not thought through. They were doomed to fail from the beginning. I am too young to believe all the lies that keep this inhumane System going.

I would consider that if we are concerned with overpopulation we should try to keep birth rates slightly under replacement rate to ease into it.
What we seem to have is continously dropping birth rates. It becomes a snowball in that younger generations get so overwhelmed with elderly care that they cannot have kids which creates less future caregivers and exponentially increases the drop in birth rates.
It is more about getting the birth rate up closer to replacement rate to slow this downward slide.

yah, this is baffling coz US and other policies deliberate targeted these trends to china,india, africa and succeeded to some extent (thank god!) so Im not sure are these academics mouthpieces to higher people or just "dumb" not seeing anything beyond that tiny box of stats. These changes happened so fast, less than half human lifetime, that as a whole globe is still just trying to adjust. To me in my local politics it is often what is not said: they worry their elder pensions are not paid coz younger gens are smaller. I dont see why many nations couldnt exist with half the population, sure exception is war, but as long as that is not threat, we can cope, perhaps even do some things better.

On one hand, they report a TFR of 2.0 and on the other hand they report that population growth rate in 1.09% which do not add up unless they have twice as many women as men. Here in India the TFR being reported now is 1.95 with a population growth rate of 0.5% which adds up.

Taking a look at some of the other animal species out there populations in which predators have been largely removed and food is available, they tend to self limit their populations. The stressors of population density actually causes mating, changes. Fecundity, care for young and so on. I guess that something like that is going on in cities around the world. It could be physiological, I don't know, cultural certainly, technological certainly with the availability of birth control. The question is is this a bad thing? Where it is a bad thing is in our economic system based on constant growth. If your company is not growing or worse if it is getting smaller it is called dying or failing. We have designed a system in which the elderly demand to be card for by the young so we need more than one working age person to support one elderly person. The economy is a consumer driven one. We are all customers. Christmas is a celebration of consumerism. A good Christmas is one in which sales were greater than the year before. In the end that model was doomed to fail and it is now failing. Just my opinion.

Exactly what I think...this change seems to be largely natural and occurring on its own like a positive or negative feedback loop in nature. Just as it was silly for people to insist we would overpopulate it is also silly we think that people will never breed again and the world will collapse. I think there are built in mechanisms from a higher power that keep things in check.
If you look, women had fewer babies in 1900 (3 babies per woman) than they did during the baby boom post WW2 (women had a whopping 4 babies per woman then). In the 1920s and 30s women had about 1.6-2.5 children on average. We stopped having as many babies after the industrial revolution began. In the 1870s women had about 4 babies, but in 1800 they had 6-8 per woman. So this decrease had already been set in place in industrialized places long ago. When the infant mortality rate drops so does the birth rate everywhere in the world. And it is not like birth patterns were always consistent in the past either...they varied quite a bit.

Throw in job insecurity, inflation, mass immigration, cultural Marxists and tree huggers and LGTQ+, the lack of religion and morals and then high rate of divorce and resulting financial devastation, it’s any wonder the fertility rate isn’t lower. I could fully understand your point of view if you live and spend all your time in a congested large city. It presents the illusion that the world is overpopulated and congested, when in fact, drive a few hours into the country, and there is vast emptiness.

I don't think that the population decline itself is such a bad thing, current number of people on the planet might be too much for Earth. We have a housing crisis and there is increasingly less intact wildlife and forest areas.
The problem is more that the population is increasing in areas that already experiencing other problems, like poverty, crime, low, warfare productivity, high mortality et cetera. This population growth intensifies these problems and keeps countries in a vicious loop.
This is suprisingly localised problem, mostly with certain countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, as stated in the video.

No one here is talking about the one wild card the could solve this issue. Reverse aging technology and automatization. The problem is a aging population. But if those elderly people were to become younger again then that would solve our problems. We know that dna gets damaged over time as we age as part of our body replacing its cells. We are getting to a point where we can repair damaged dna and if we do that we will perhaps double the human lifespan. We must also consider further automatization is definitely within our future as cheep labor gets more scarce there will be a need for new way to manufacture goods cheeply. Technology has always gotten us out of these problems before and I predict even further advances will be made to combat this problem

True automation is devilishly hard though.
Reverse aging is also problematic. It would likely cost a lot, and it is only good for extending work by a few years in the retirement zone of someones life. Once they are retired, the best we can hope for is part time and casual levels of work. Thats useful, but if it only covered part of the cost of keeping them going, then its just mitigating the problem, not solving it.

I've longed believed that china has for the longest time knowing been lying about their population numbers as a way to keep companies coming to them for cheap labor. the constantly lie about stuff we have photo evidence of they were asked back in 2021 if they were building or expanding their nuclear weapons systems and they lied but we know now using satellite imaginary that in fact they are expanding and building more nuclear silos. There wouldn’t be a problem with population rise if people were willing to move to rural areas and live off the land as societies did in the past, but 90% of people today want to be city dwellers and either have some sort of an office desk job or be in the service sector. Obviously, many practical minds make the decision of becoming doctors or engineers - the professions that will always be demanded. What this means is that cities will keep growing, and a fewer number of farmers will have to feed an ever growing urban population, most of which doesn’t really produce anything, except waste! Thus, the depopulation trend is actually a very positive trend, as it means the cities won’t grow at the pace they have been for the past 150 years (and especially the past few decades in developing countries) and there won’t be a food crisis. Also, there is hope more people will embrace the rural lifestyle, growing organic food, keeping animals, and possibly gaining income by working remotely on their computers.
Instead of raising animals I would encourage people to stop eating them in the first place, but that’s a difficult conversation to have with our prehistoric brain
