  • @TheRealDrKev and Bruce chat to Status Quo founder & frontman Francis Rossi about how to survive in the shark pit of rock n' roll. They talk egos, personas, and the psychological dynamics of being in an enduring, iconic rock band. Oh, and does it really make sense for Spotify to have over 4000 different music genres...?

There's a few things going on here that I feel were almost touched upon and I feel should be delved in a bit more detail:-
On Bowie's reinvention, Quo's sound over the decades, and the fans: I've often thought that Bowie's fans and Quo's fans are similar in that the golden age (yes I'm avoiding the obvious punnery there :) ) is almost identical. Bowie's perhaps being 69-75 and Quo's 70-76, with both sets of fans refusing to listen to anything outside of those parameters. One of my favourite Bowie albums is "hours..." (1999) that I know of as the soundtrack to the computer game Omikron: The Nomad Soul that was then released as the aforementioned album, but the Bowie fans tend to only be familiar with songs such as Space Oddity, Changes, Sound & Vision and so on. Similarly with Quo, the later albums tend to get ignored by the hardcore fans (Under The Influence anyone? Great album, completely underrated and underappreciated) with a focus on earlier material such as Caroline, Down Down, Mystery Song, Roll Over Lay Down etc.
Notice I didn't mention the early albums of Bowie or Quo, but instead the more notable singles/the more appreciated songs. Even hardcore fans are hard pressed to realise that the Hello! album wasn't entirely hard rock, going into melodic ballads and more soulful material (Reason For Living, And It's Better Now) before the culmination of all the elements of the album in the form of the much loved in the live set 4500 TImes. The same can be said for all the Quo albums, even the hardcore tend to focus on the hits/rockier material irrespective of the fact that other genres are clearly present. Which brings me back to the myopia the fans have that yourselves highlighted.
Finally as regards Quo's sound; it isn't just because of when the songs were recorded, that is however a huge factor. Listen to other 70s rock material and there's a very similar sound because of all the recording techniques, same kind of knowledge and understanding, and the basic instrument setup of percussion; rhythm guitar; lead guitar; bass guitar; vocals. The late 70s had a bit of a change though, early 80s Quo output had something of a hybrid of early 70s and early 80s, mid-80s onward had that very 80s rock sound that most bands had at the time, the 90s saw a more mature minded approach to the sound (I'd argue Rock 'Til You Drop is properly balanced Quo album just as their albums had been in the 70s), the Thirsty Work album had a lot of different sound palettes but perhaps just had too much stuff, the aforementioned Under The Influence album had a very different vibe in my opinion and a fun one but perhaps not a "hard rock" one for fans of Quo's earlier works.
I'm not saying that Quo have been so vastly different as Bowie had been in his career, but I am saying that Quo has changed up the sound and haven't just stayed the same even during their 70-76 output. Instead they've adapted to the market (whether that's good or bad is debatable, but Quo survived so I'd say it was good or at least a necessary evil) and that's something the group of fans that are referred to in the discussion just can't/won't handle. I can't get into Quid Pro Quo or Backbone for some reason that's entirely in my own mind, yet I have no issue with Heavy Traffic and In Search Of The Fourth Chord, the difference between myself and certain fans out there I'd say is that I know its me and not the band.
P.S. I enjoyed Rossi's second solo album One Step At A Time in its entirety back in 2010 and now. Plus I recently found myself happily listening to "Happy Town" from his first solo album King Of The Doghouse and Andy Bown's "Rubber Gloves". I've still yet to listen to my copy of Rick's solo album that I haven't been able to bring myself to do. One day I'll sit down, headphones on, and play the record.

@@NothingToDismay I read a lot of takes on this from different sources really. It was quite evident at the time that Adrian was not particularly keen on the direction that 'No prayer for the dying' was going and he was constantly raising his concerns to a point where Steve (along with Rod) sat down with him and asked whether he still felt part of it or not. Adrian didn't give a clear answer which made Steve let him go but make it look as it was in terms of a mutual consent.

My only regret is that Rick and Francis obviously didn’t have a great friendship in the later days, but I can understand why Francis would feel the way he did. Rick didn’t do himself any favours with his health and Francis didn’t like the way his old mate didn’t listen…

Thinking about what makes a great band, I think more important than talent or chemistry or creativity is the assemblage of a line-up of musical archetypes that are unmistakable and set in granite. The bass player has to be a bass player; even if he can play guitar well it has to be unthinkable that he'd ever switch. The drummer, well we all know about them. Guitarists - it's actually helpful if they pretend to be a bit less archetypal while sucking up the primordial sludge imessily in private. Ditto singers. I've been in bands where there was discussion about so and so switching to bass or even "decks" whatever that means, but they all failed. (I'm a monolithic keyboard player, by the way.) This prescription is the reason why so few bans of legendary status ever make advances in the group singing dept similar to what The Beatles did (and in their case it was the necessity of their Hamburg gigs that conditioned them to make that extra leap). That part of archetypal musician syndrome - shirking microphones - annoys me but perhaps it shouldn't! Nevertheless, as Francis Rossi has expressed about the precious "Everly Brothers":years when he and Rick Parfitt had complementary voices and enthusiasm for harmony singing, that is the Holy Grail, the Philosopher's Stone rather, that can turn a decent wine into Champagne. Oh yeah, and a fondness for booze and getting merry in each others' company, is also something that makes bands tick. So booze and archetypes. (Bathos much? Not drummers.)
    .

Rossi thinks that he is more important than everyone and everything.
The fact that Rossi wears white socks all the time is proof that he isn't.
It's very sad that Rossi doesn't understand what STATUS QUO means to everyone else.
Imagine if you had one of your children abducted and you never saw them again, well that's how ALAN LANCASTER felt.
There are certain albums and horrible songs that should've been released as THE ROSSI / FROST BAND.
Rossi should've had the decency and dignity to say " these songs don't represent the essence of QUO and our supporters "
We'll set a benchmark criteria of what stipulates the QUO IMAGE and not release anything that falls below that level.
Peace, love and respect to Alan, Rick and John, The Frantic 3, Roy Lynes, Andy Bown, Bob Young etc........
