I love watching Joel Embiid play, particularly with Maxey. But man. I cannot understand why he doesn't stay in shape during the off-season. I do not believe he would be suffering from anywhere near the number of injuries he does if he took better care of his body.
Some injuries maybe but Embiid is unlucky though, he got his face broken 2 times by someone else..most of his injuries are caused by another player hitting him
Having a friend that experienced same injury in hs, I don't think a meniscus can get recovered in 2 weeks lol, so he deffo not even playing 55 even, let alone 65, he is out.
I hope so. He doesn’t deserve it. That’s not mvp material. I wish him good health but he better not be awarded f all.
He’s an injury prone player and it’s not his fault. However it’s not the fans responsibility. We can’t prevent injuries they just happen yet these guys think he’s the first player in nba history to get hurt and not get an award. Also didn’t Embiid say MVP didn’t matter? So he played on a him knee because of peer pressure? Everyone in the sixers staff should be fired if they let that happen.
This is definately true and should be pretty obvious to actual physio therapists. Whats worse is come playoffs if you havent been playing like its playoffs every game then of course you gonna get injured because the muscle adapts to certain activitt you cannot ramp up the activity sharply and evidence backs it up. Every single playoffs injuries spike.
Look, had Embid not already missed 12 games, he'd have 17 to recover from this injury. Ducking smoke and taking days off. If one guy plays 55 games and another guy plays 70 those who played 70 are have 15 more contributions making them more valuable. There has to be a limit for a fair and accurate comparison between players for seasonal awards, especially MVP.
Completely agree. It is not the same effort if one guy plays 45, and other 70 something games. Because of this rule next season will be even better. Because players will finaly save all those games for real and potential injuries.
Since being drafted, (as of Jan 16 2024) Embiid has only played in 55.7% of Philadelphia's games. He was drafted the same year as Jokic. Embiid has played 422 games, Jokic has played 645 games. They're the same height. The same weight. Size is not a valid excuse to miss just as many games as you play. One has a ring. One has lost in the 2nd round 5 times.. Embiid is an average player that stat pads against bad teams, sits out against good teams, and then sits out the rest of the year. These facts have been consistent throughout his career.
I do like Ernie's idea that the bigger awards should require 65. but All-NBA 2nd team etc, you can be more lenient when it comes to real injuries for the players that are playing above and beyond the rest. Like say, have them be eligible for 60 games minimum.
I like that compromise, but only for players that play so incredibly well in those fewer games that they force people to have to vote them in. I don't want a random dude averaging 20pts but playing 60 games demanding a 2nd team vote. For that recognition with that few of games, you have to go above and beyond to get those awards
Availability is the bed ability and a skill as well if not only a talent. So is conditioning and training for strength and endurance. Plyometrics, strength training, weightlifting, calisthenics etc
This rule is amazing for everyone but the big ego players who want to string together multi-year award seasons. Finally it’s not a popularity contest for most of these guys.
Embiid is definitely not the “clear cut” MVP. He doesn’t have the highest BPM or the highest WS/48. The MVP is Jokic and number 2 is Shai Gilgeous Alexander. The media meat-riding for Embiid the Free Throw merchant is insane.
Joel Embiid has never been able to be on court for 8+ years. He should only play 40-45 regular season games per year. For him to win a championship he needs an equal number one option alongside. 😊
We have to understand also that today the pace of play is 50% faster than in the 90s. As an easy fact, the possession off offensive rebound is only 14s now versus 24s. There are giant bodies going up and down at high speed. Something got to break often.
Pace was also really high in the 80s as well. It's the 3pt shot that maximizes efficiency, and yes teams shoot quicker in the clock to maximize possessions. The game was very up and down in the 80s but it was thought that the best shots are layups first, then paint shots and then mid-range.
This is his own fault for playing through injuries just cause he wants another MVP so bad. Maybe he should care more about championships and his team and rest so he could’ve been healthy for the playoffs. But he clearly valued winning an MVP, more than winning in the playoffs.
In baseball, they have a DL, why not make it if a player has a significant injury, you put them on an injury list for a minimum of 15 days, in terms of "games played" it nullifies that period of games and makes it so they can still qualify, that's preventing load management and being fair imo
For MVP it definitely should be a minimum of 65 games because if your team can play without you for 20 or more games, then it proves you AREN'T THAT VALUABLE! As for the individual statistic races, I like Gilbert Arenas' idea that you do it on TOTAL numbers divided by 82. So if you take off 20 games, you'll have to average 10 points a game more than everyone else to still get the most. You don't need to put a game limit on it and as a result, someone could win with 25ppg if they play 82. But the players need to stop whining. If you take 20 games off, you don't have to deal with the exhaustion someone playing every night has to overcome. So it's being unfair to the guys playing every day if your averages are higher because you're only playing 75% of the time and resting all the other games. Then you could take the night off every time you're scheduled against a tough defensive team and cruise to an individual award (plus get your big contract bonus).

I like that compromise, but only for players that play so incredibly well in those fewer games that they force people to have to vote them in. I don't want a random dude averaging 20pts but playing 60 games demanding a 2nd team vote. For that recognition with that few of games, you have to go above and beyond to get those awards

Chuck absolutely killed this take!

Yea hes so good he gets them to that playoff loss every year
Meanwhile real people out here working a minimum of 260 days a year
In baseball, they have a DL, why not make it if a player has a significant injury, you put them on an injury list for a minimum of 15 days, in terms of "games played" it nullifies that period of games and makes it so they can still qualify, that's preventing load management and being fair imo
You just described Princess James' career in a nutshell.

For Embiid's case, unless he heals remarkably fast and plays around 55 games for the season, he should be disqualified as scoring leader average wise. Bernard King in 1985 led NBA with 32.9 points and played just 55 games. Embiid is notching 35.3 points but only played 34 games thus far. Rumors are he's likely out for the season.
