When I was living in Venice in 1982. I was begging for a living and often in conflict with the local law force's. It was not uncommon for the police to pick us up and give us a kicking and then take us by boat to this or a smaller island and maroon us there. One had to either swim to the lido or try to hail a passing boat to get back to Venice centre. I never stayed long enough to find out if the police ever returned to check up on the people they marooned there. Thanks for bringing back memories of my youth.

I agree that I can't find anything scary about it other than the falling masonry of the completely derelict buildings. You would think that if a very rich person bought the place and restored it to its former glory and turned it into some hotel it would be very popular. Haunted hotels are very popular, especially with American tourists. It is a good way to combine the sights of Venice with the thrill of sleeping in a supposed haunted house. I think guests would pay big money for a room here.

i was stationed in Italy with the US Army in the late 1990's and was lucky enough to spend three days exploring Pisa on foot and spent from dawn to late at night walking Venice. one of the stops on our guided tour of Venice was via water-taxi and we stopped next to some island in the lagoon, i don't remember the name of it at this moment. there were GIANT signs posted on the shores talking about poisons in more than one language. the Italian lady who was our guide said the whole island was 'forbidden' to land on by ANYBODY. she said there had been a rat infestation on the island and it was so terrible that ARSENIC had been dropped on the island by helicopter. there was so much poison remaining on the island that anybody that walked there without a protective suit would DIE.
personally, i've never heard of Poveglia. probably because i don't give a single hoot over those 'ghost story' shows and all the 'redevelopment' parts of this island's story... happened well after i left Italy.
best of luck to the Poveglia for Everybody movement, i hope you get it back and enjoy cleaning up decades of neglect. after visiting places like this island around the world (with Uncle Sam's support) i know how craptastical and backbreaking the work will be.
one of my most heartfelt 'pie in the sky' dreams if i got super-rich off the lottery... buy a tiny home somewhere in Venice and spend a lazy expat retirement learning Italian and exploring one of my favorite cities on this planet.

It's always so much easier, (and fun) to make up baseless, fantastical stories than to learn true historical facts with all those bothersome dates and names of people that actually existed.
Poveglia is a beautiful little island and could make a wildlife preserve, hosting only native flora and fauna. It could then be used as an educational facility for students of biology, botany, and other schools of nature study. A place for post high school students to study and a place for school trips for younger students, as well.
I, too, have fantasies. They just don't involve horror stories and the demonic spirits that follow. They are fantasies of hope for a brighter future for generations to come.

Here's another haunted island: Roosevelt Island. It's a part of the NYC borough of Manhattan and is in the middle of the East River between Manhattan and Queens. This is the island the Queensboro Bridge crosses over and the one with the aerial tramway seen in the 2002 Spider-Man movie. The island was called Minnehanonck by the Lenape and Varkens Eylandt (Hog Island) by the Dutch during the colonial era and later Blackwell's Island. It was known as Welfare Island when it was used principally for hospitals, from 1921 to 1973. It was renamed Roosevelt Island in honor of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1973. So why is it haunted? Because of the hospitals and a prison. The island was NYC's prison before Rikers!
A Smallpox Hospital opened in 1856 and shut down a century later, with 7K patients a year, 30K died there. Like the aerial tramway, this was also featured in the Spider-Man Movie. The Octagon was erected in 1834 and served as the main entrance to the New York City Mental Health Hospital aka the City’s Lunatic Asylum. The place came under scrutiny in 1887 when it became the center of an exposé by journalist Nellie Bly in her 1887 book Ten Days in a Mad-House. The journalist from American Horror Story: Asylum is based off Bly. There's also the Strecker Memorial Laboratory, the site of the first American pathological and bacteriological research center...now used by the NYC Subway

Speaking of mysterious, two haunted islands in NYC are Hart Island and North Brother Island. North Brother Island is by Rikers Island while Hart Island is by City Island off of the Bronx. North Brother Island was home to Riverside Hospital that housed patients with quarantinable diseases like tuberculosis. The place is haunted because of Mary Mallon, nicknamed Typhoid Mary who lived and died there. All the buildings on the island are extremely dilapidated. After this, different kinds of shorebirds started thriving there. Because of these two reasons, they don't allow visitors between March and September due to shorebird breeding season, and even during the time you technically can, they still won't let you unless you have "compelling academic and scientific purposes that are a benefit to NYC Parks".
On Hart Island, MANY people are buried there (more than one million; from Civil War to the 2020 pandemic) and it also had dilapidated buildings that the city ordered to demolish in 2021. They restrict access to this island to the public unless you're on a twice-per-month tour, you're visiting a loved one buried there, or you're the media.

There's a novel that features all of the lurid stories. I read it while I was there. The Vampire of Venice, written around the time when they discovered those vampire burials where the skeletondhad bricks stuck between their jaws. It was a fun read, but the author and exact title escape me. I want to say it was written around 2011.

You kept saying three separate islands, but we could only see two in the videos, an island and the little octagon for the fort. But on Maps, you see that the main island is split in two, by a fairly narrow channel.
Did you finally escape from the dungeon? Or did they just let you out into the upper floors? Foolish of them. Now we can look see the surrounding area, and some may recognize something, so we can come and rescue you.

Well, what with Danny and all the other writers, the basement dungeon was probably getting a little crowded and noisy. Luckily he as Hello Fresh and Athletic Greens delivered into a chute reasonably regularly. If not, they can always boil and eat the Vessis..

WOW! that was extremely informative, I truly believed the old stories, about the past of this beautiful island.
Thank you for your videos, would though love you to speak a bit slower, don’t forget your none native English speaking fans, I lived 20 years in London and at times struggle to keep up, mainly due to the many facts, dates, names, locations and numbers.

You should do a video on towns like Centralia, PA. A few i know are Pitcher, OK, Gilman, CO, and Wittenoom, Western Australia. Pitcher, OK has an interesting twist (no pun intended) when an EF4 hit it while being evacuated.

A “lazaretto,” “lazarus hospital,” and similar names commonly refer to a hospital for lepers (people with Hansen’s disease, also known as leprosy). But there are also cases of a “lazaretto” being a hospital for plague victims, or a quarantine station for people with various contagious diseases, and/or for incoming sailors who might be disease carriers.
