Actually, having lived during that time, I can assure you that a lot of hair spray was used. So much so you could bounce rocks off the doos. It was almost another helmet. Lots and lots of Aquanet.
The only thing I knew about Agnew was him being a headless body that acted as a goon for Nixon's bodiless head on Futurama😄 And that is his only pop culture reference I can think of 😄. In the country's memory space, Ford is Nixon's VP and it is crazy how Agnew's criminality has just been forgotten (and I was in grade school when he was kicked out).

And you are right. He was disgraced as the liar and crook he was and then forgotten.
